What is this Chinese pastry called??

A guest (that I don't know) left some sort of Chinese pastry at my place. It's shaped like an oblong loaf, about four inches wide, ten inches long, and 1.5 inches tall. The whole thing is fairly chewy/glutenous and dense. The outside skin is an opaque white, and it seems to be filled with a translucent starch that in appearance sort of reminds me of balls of tapioca, but smaller. There are nuts inside it as well. The flavor of the confection is sort of sweet/savory, and I think it might have lard in it. Any ideas what it is?

Got a wok as a gift! my seasoning adventure

An ex gave me a wok once and then dumped me. A Chinese friend later told me that one should never give a wok as a gift, because wok and disaster sound similar in Cantonese. I hope things go better for you.

Lunch delivery to Charles Village

Additional info -- it's 10-12 people, and delivery is essential. I have a $50 limit, and they aren't huge eaters.

Lunch delivery to Charles Village

I'm taking over ordering food for my group's lunch meetings on JHU's Homewood (Charles Village) campus. Any suggestions? It's a diverse group of non-picky eaters, except for 1-2 vegetarians.

Indianapolis - Chicago-Style Italian Beef Sandwich

Found the place I mentioned...
http://www.bigcitygrilllemonade.com/index.html

I happen to have some beef bubbling on the stove and Gonnella rolls in the freezer. MMMM

Indianapolis - Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich

Rjohn, it seems like we have similar taste in sandwiches. I went to Famous Steak and Lemonade on Keystone a few times and had decent steaks. However, more often I made them at home. Grab some thinly sliced bulgogi beef from an Asian grocery store, two metal spatulas, and a cast iron pan. My GF is from Philly and I always have Amoroso rolls in the freezer, but other sub buns will do.

Indianapolis - Chicago-Style Italian Beef Sandwich

When I lived in Indy a year ago, there was a place on 38th between Meridian and Central. I don't remember it too well, but it had at least passable Italian beef, and pizza puffs, too.

Pilar's - Ann Arbor

I found the w. liberty location to be terrible. The tamales were unwrapped, water logged, and bland. The rice and beans were similarly bland and watery. And they are selling their tamales for four bucks a piece.

Squash blossoms near Ann Arbor

Looking for squash blossoms around Ann Arbor... has anyone seem them?

kung pao _________ recipes

I had some awesome kung pao tofu at a chinese spot in town, and I'd like to make it at home tomorrow, since I believe I have everything on hand. I looked at the kung pao chicken recipe from Cooks Illustrated, and though it looks good, I'm interested in other suggestions or advice. It's for a date, and I'd like to make it well the first time. Thanks!

Vegan grub in downtown Dallas

I'll be in Dallas later this week for a conference at the Hyatt Regency downtown. Is there any vegan grub within walking distance?

Metro Detroit Lebanese with great vegetarian options

I've been looking at some of the Lebeanese spots mentioned on the boards and they all seem quite meat focused, except for cold spreads and mejadra. Are there any SE MI places with particularly solid veg options?

Cheap eats in Toronto

I'm heading to Toronto from Detroit for a few days with a friend, and we will be in search of cheap grub. We would prefer regional specialties, or other things not seen in Detroit or Chicago. Portuguese chicken in already on our list. any suggestions?

And another request: any suggestions on a Nepali restaurant?

Thanks!

Lemon ginger tea recipes

I have a date tomorrow, and she really likes the lemon ginger tea at the local coffee shop. I was thinking of trying to make it. Anyone have any recipes? Thanks!

Cornbread recipes with onion

I once worked in a restaurant that served cornbread with plenty of onion flavor. It was sort of like a good hushpuppy. I have to bring some cornbread to a potluck tomorrow, so I'm trying to find a suitable recipe. Any suggestions?

Watching a game at a Chicago bar

I'll be spending a weekend in Chicago next weekend. I have to find a bar to catch the end of the Purdue-Michigan game, because it's my alma mater vs my employer. Any suggestions on an interesting bar that would have it on? In bars, I like craft beer, and my partner likes warm drinks. Couches are nice too. Thanks!

New high end vegan in Chicago?

My partner and I will be heading to Chicago in two weeks for our anniversary dinner. I've looked through all the posts from the past two years. We ate at Green Zebra last year and weren't that impressed. I've seen Lula and North Pond mentioned a few times, but we avoid cheese in addition to meat. I've been looking at Crofton on Wells and Topolobampo. Any other suggestions?

Halp! Detroit eats tonight.

I planned to drive out from Ann Arbor and eat at Slow's with a friend tonight, but I've read that the line can be crazy. We have other plans and don't have hours that we can wait. And after waiting last night for a disappointing meal at Zingerman's Roadhouse, I'm not in the mood for another wait.

A coney is too downscale, and I'm not really in the mood for pizza. Any other suggestions for Detroit-specific food? Thanks!

metro Detroit bars

I'm heading out to Detroit this weekend to check out some neighborhoods. I'm planning to look at Royal Oak, Ferndale, and Hamtramck (as well as any you suggest). I'm looking for a few places to have some drinks. I generally like neighborhood spots, and I especially like the hip sort of places that feel more like a coffeeshop. Good beers and couches are a plus. Any suggestions?

cheap eats in downtown Ann Arbor

Any suggestions? I've been slacking on bringing my lunch. I'd like to find some good grub for under $5. I've checked out Blimpy Burger, BTB burritos, the falafel places, Jamaican Jerk Pit, Le Dog, and that vegan buffet. Except for Blimpy, I'd like to move on.

Ann Arbor neighborhood bars and coffee shops

PS are there any coffee shops in Ann Arbor or Ypsi that serve beer?

Ann Arbor neighborhood bars and coffee shops

I'm moving to Ann Arbor soon, and finding "my bar" would be substantial progress toward finding my niche. I'm looking for neighborhood spots, where interaction is what they are about. In my experience, these places generally don't have live music, maybe just a quiet jukebox, and don't serve much food. And finding a good coffee shop would be great too. Any suggestions?

Indianapolis ethnic

Some good friends are coming into town tomorrow and I'm looking for a place to eat. Their request was unfamiliar ethnic grub thats cheap. I've been to the Ethiopian spots in town and have had much better in Chicago. Same goes for the one Vietnamese place I have been too. Thai is out too. And they won't eat tripas or cabeza. What do I do?

tenderloin bars

I'll be getting into SF around 11 pm, and I'm looking for a bar in the tenderloin that won't be packed and isn't excessively seedy. Any suggestions?

Non-chain 24hr fast food close to interstate 70

Anything? I'm heading to Atlantic City from Indianapolis this weekend. I'm trying to make good time, but I'd still like to avoid the usual chains.

Non-chain 24hr fast food close to 70 or 76

Anything? I'm heading to Atlantic City from Indianapolis this weekend. I'm trying to make good time, but I'd still like to avoid the usual chains.

What's the best and worst thing you ate this week in Indianapolis?

I ate at Brugge a year ago and had so-so beer, limp fries, mussels in a weak broth, and a chunk of submarine bread that couldn't soak up anything without falling apart. The cooks didn't pull out the dead mussels either. My GF had a duck confit crepe with an overpowering mustard sauce. It surprises me to see it at the top of your list. It seems like the reputation of that place was built on a previous cook.

Pizza or pub grub in Indianapolis

I'm looking for a down-to-earth place to get some grub and a few beers with a visiting friend. Good pizza would be best. I've had Jackamo's and Bazbeaux's, and wasn't a fan of either. Too short of a rise I think, not enough chew or flavor. Any other suggestions? If those are the best in this area, then does anyone have any suggestions on pub grub?
