if you are asking about the fresh ginger root in the produce section, i used it in a sauce with pear cider last night.

that mustard (hot and sweet) has actually been available all year. at least in 2013 it was. usually it's nov-april. just because it stayed on the shelves all year last year won't keep me from stocking up on a few extra jars this month, though. joe's ways are mysterious, and "ham season" is almost over for the year...

Trader Joe's YAY/NAY - March 2014 [OLD]

it's great raw--i throw in some dried cranberries, sometimes some cubed white cheddar or pepper toscana, and sometimes apple cubes. you can dress it ahead of time, b/c it's so hearty it doesn't sog up--more like marinates. love this blend, raw or sauteed.

Discontinued at Trader Joe's: January 2014-June 2014

it is "seasonal" for the holidays--usually appears about october. i use puff pastry in all seasons, so i hoard it in my freezer.

Does TrJ Care? (Do they act on customer feedback?)

they try to keep preservatives to a minimum, and no artificial preservatives in the trader joe's-labeled items. salt acts as a preservative and is "natural". that's one of the reasons their stuff is sometimes higher in sodium.
as far as responsiveness, i do know that an actual person reads every email they receive. but if a few people complain about sodium levels, that may not be cause for action. i know they have responded on other issues, non-BGH milk, moving toward sustainable seafood, etc., so it's worth a shot.

I need the anti-mustard

if it's already made, i'd do a breadcrumb/grated cheese topping to add distracting crunch, and to dilute the mustard flavor a bit. good luck!

Homemade Mozz...w/o rennet, et al?

and that's commercial rennet. strips of the calves stomach were dried and used for long periods, reconstituted in water. i've seen this done in modern days---it's just that the strength is variable, and commercial rennet is standardized strength, so you get the same result every time.

Sodium Citrate?

you might try here:
http://www.homesteadsupplyco.com/
not sure what you need it for, but i know it's used in cheesmaking, and they carry some cheese making supplies. good luck.

Trader Joe's Yay/Nay - February 2014! [OLD]

no preservatives=more quickly spoiled. the peppers can be frozen--there is some texture change, but for dips, soups, dressings, that's not a concern. i love these peppers, and if i only need one whole for sandwiches or something, i can always use a little romesco or muhummara made with the other one so it doesn't go to waste. i'd rather toss the occasional roasted pepper that went bad b/c of no preservatives than have a jar full of additive-filled ones hanging around. ymmv.

ohmylord. the chicken thigh and sausage hash with fennel, sweet potatoes and i-don't-even-know-what-else, with two poached eggs on top at simpatica dining hall changed my life.

more like a cookie, heyimback. they are great perched atop a cup of coffee for a while, so they get sticky, warm and gooey.

ladd's addition suggestions

just wanted to follow up with another thanks! so far i've hit palio (and also cellar door, which my daughter recommended). had some little t bread with vino and cheeses the other night. hit roost for dinner last night-pretty good, but there were a few details that grated on me. the evening prior we were at the farm cafe, which was charming and also grabbed some soup at ford's that was good. did the se branch of olympic provisions today and it was amazing. (not on your list, but not too far away!) tonight we were at bar avignon, had just ordered when my daughter felt ill. had them box up our meal and i took her home to rest. i thought my foie agnelotti with roasted pear and cider reduction would be a little gross from a cardboard container, but nope! it was fantastic. can't wait to try again next visit, on real plates. i will be checking out people's co-op and mirador tomorrow. loving this airbnb i found, and walking through the maze of ladd's addition, so i will def be back in this neighborhood again.

Barberries in sgv?

found them at golden farms on san fernando road in glendale.
http://www.yelp.com/biz/golden-farms-glendale

seeing the vast array of frozen pelmeni here jogged my memory into thinking that my previous source may well have been the crazy russian costco place in n hwd. (excuse me--cost.co!) i buy caviar here at holiday time, and i think i probably picked up the previous batch while i was there. i love this place.

Barberries in sgv?

i called jon's and asked both for dried barberries and zereshk. nope. asked at sunland produce (at the service desk in front).the woman said they don't carry them because they are "too expensive". ?? the package i had was $4.99.
someone suggested golden farms, where i haven't been in ages. will call or go by there tomorrow.

Barberries in sgv?

Looking for barberries-- I have a container labeled sadaf (which I know is a common distributed of middle eastern ingredients), but no indication where I got it. Grrrr. Checked super king, sun land produce and Aladdin but house with no success. Anybody???

DTLA Cheese, GCM

but th e "raclette" is not raclette. i asked specifically and was told that's why it's in quotation marks--they don't use raclette cheese. it was a cheddar the day i was there, on broccolini. good, but not raclette.

new and notable. chocolate shortbread minihearts, coated with dark chocolate and sprinkles. seasonal for valentine's day, i presume. i thought they would be like the chocolate covered stars they sell at christmas/hanukah/winter solstice, but the main difference is that the cookie itself is chocolate. not bad--not too-too sweet, which is always a plus for me. we had a couple stuck into a little bowl of coffee ice cream. i'd do that again...

hars52, they don't. i have seen ground beef and ground turkey. i think there's ground chicken, but not certain. i get my ground pork at sprouts (i know they aren't everywhere) or more often, grind my own in my food processor. that way i know what i'm getting.

Eatily

agree with steve h--i've only been to one eataly, and that was in genoa. iirc, that's the original.(i stand corrected--the first eataly was in turin.) it was fabulous--floor after floor of italian specialties--pastas, fresh and dried, oils, sauces, balsamicos, dried mushrooms and tomatoes, vino and more. several dining options and wine bars. loved it. put me in mind of gallerie lafayette's food "court", but italian. i would love to see an eataly in los angeles.

Kirkland Frozen Raw Shrimp

i was delighted to find frozen, shell-on, raw wild caught shrimp at costco about a month ago. up 'til recently, they've only carried farmed, which i won't buy. these were great--2 lb, around $26. can't recall the count, but they were nice sized--maybe 21-25s? from the gulf of mexico.
