Returning hound; what's opened in the past year or so that I shouldn't miss?

Thanks for the recs, Ruth. It's SO much easier to do a search when you have the names.

And pork butter! That sounds great. I'm probably not going to be able to resist stopping by Hog Island at the Ferry Building, so I'll definitely check out Boccalone while I'm there.

Returning hound; what's opened in the past year or so that I shouldn't miss?

I left SF for the east coast a year and a half ago, and will be returning soon for a brief visit. I'm having a terrible time trying to decide which of my old haunts I should try to squeeze into this trip and was thinking that maybe I should just try somewhere new instead of trying to relive old glories.

Are there any not-to-be-missed places that have opened in the past year or so in SF or the East Bay? I just did a search hoping to find one of Prabhakar Ragde's yearly trip reports, but it doesn't look like he did one last year.

FWIW, before I left, I think the most recently-opened places that I really loved were Perbacco, Olivia (which I know has closed), and that Burmese deli across the street from the Federal Building.

Thanks!

Is there a good NY bagel shop in DC?

The day I found Goldberg's was a happy day. They're properly chewy and dense, not bready like Ize's and not hard and rubbery like Bagel City. Having just had a bagel at Ess-A-Bagel in NYC, I can say that Goldberg's is pretty close, close enough that I get giddy every time I go there. Their bagels aren't as gargantuan as those at Ess-A-Bagel, but that's fine by me. The place is very bare bones, and their coffee is terrible, but it's a great place to get bagels to go. The hours are a little funky: 7-3 Sunday through Wednesday, 7-7 Thursday, 7-3 Friday, and closed Saturday.

Late night Rockville/Silver Spring?

We just recently moved to the Rockville/Silver Spring area and are at a loss for late night dining options. Frequently, after a movie or show, we'll think, "let's get a bite to eat." But where can we go after 10 p.m.? The only places I know of that are open late are the Silver and Broadway diners and Ambrosia. But sometimes you want a big bowl of Chinese noodle soup, or a cocktail and some tapas, or a nice dessert. What's open around here after 10 p.m.?

SF - Breakfast or Brunch at the Beach Chalet?

We just had brunch at the Beach Chalet last weekend and were unimpressed. Nothing was truly horrible, but everything was kind of ho-hum. I had the crab benedict, which came with very little crab and lots of sauce. Eh. Someone else had the andouille omelet which I had a few bites of and was dry and overcooked. Another person had the asparagus & parmesan omelet, which consisted of a somewhat dry omelet wrapped around three pieces of asparagus and a sprinkling of parmesan. I'm told it was extremely bland. The view is great and the service is pleasant enough, but I wouldn't rush back.

Michael Mina: should I even bother?

You'll see lots of jackets and ties and suits at the Ritz, but I showed up without a tie or a jacket and was welcomed warmly.

Cheap Comforting Dinner EC, Albany, Berkeley?

I really like the tortilla soup at Picante for a cheap rainy night meal.

If you want to spend a little more, how about a glass of wine and some schnitzel at Britt-Marie's on Solano?

New in Point Richmond -- any good eating here?

Hidden City Cafe is great for breakfast, one of the best places anywhere in the area.

East bay restaurants with decks or patios?

For a really casual lunch, Meal Ticket at Gilman & San Pablo has a pleasant outdoor patio. I go there all the time for breakfast on the weekends.
