Looking for feedback: A quick 24 hrs of eating and beer/chocolate sampling

For Friday, I would order my food preference as 1. Toro Bravo (usually a line forms before they open, so you might have to wait a few minutes even if you're early), 2. Park Kitchen, and 3. Paley's Place. For proximity to neighborhoods where it would be fun to wander, I'd reverse the order!

For chocolate, there is no competition: Cacao.

Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #16 (FINAL Finale Pt. 4) - 03/30/11 (Spoilers)

I wonder if Richard is one of those people who just can't pronounce foreign words easily--I know several intelligent, capable people who have that problem. I remember that during the first season of Top Chef Masters that Michael Chiarello was insisting that his sous chefs (from previous TC competitions) had to pronounce his name correctly, and Richard couldn't do it. Of course Richard went on to work with Rick Bayless and they seemed to do very well together.

Marcel's Quantum Kitchen

I'm following the advice of the NPR entertainment blog (http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee), who tweeted yesterday:
"I'm not watching 'Marcel's Quantum Kitchen,' because I had a frozen popcorn ball he made once, and it just tasted like frozen popcorn."

Turkish Food

I haven't tried Secret Kebab yet, but I have to say his twitter feed is awesome. For example, one of my favorites recently:
"I am for the market!! Which kind of green leafs you wil want on kebab this night?! Lettuce I wil not in winter!! Strong leafs only!!"

Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #14 (Finale Pt. 2) - 03/16/11 (Spoilers)

This is one where I was really annoyed by the editing. During the meal there was one comment about the undercooked lobster, and lengthy discussion of how good Richard's dish was. When they tasted Mike's dish, most of the discussion was negative--so much so that I thought he might be going home. But then it turns out that they name Mike the winner. I know that they have to edit the comments to make it seem interesting, but in a few cases like this they make it deliberately misleading.

If it's any consolation to Richard, if I had to choose between eating at Mike's restaurant or Richard's restaurant, hands down I'd eat at Richard's.

Richard had a couple of interesting tweets during the show. First, he gave a warning about "topless chef" coming in a few minutes, and having just seen the previews of them diving I figured that we'd be seeing more than we might want to of one of the guys. In his interview comments during the judging he said that he didn't believe that his lobster was undercooked, then in a tweet he said he'd like to get Eric Ripert's opinion on it.

Recommendations for small celebrations

Toro Bravo takes a limited number of reservations for parties of 8 or more early in the evening. I did this once and it was fabulous, because with that many people you can order tons of different food and share everything.

More like the EC, I expect, but not like the QF, which was a terrible challenge that produced some disgusting food (I liked Bourdain's comment that Mike said he wouldn't feed his "soup" to a cat, but that he apparently would feed it to Dan Barber).

With respect to the EC, it seems like they often don't do long, slow braises because they have limited time--you generally need more than three hours to do those.

Was there any reward at all for the quickfire in this episode? Obviously they're not going to be safe from elimination at this stage, but don't they get something, like money or an advantage in the elimination? I don't remember Carla getting anything for her QF win tonight.

And on the subject of the QF, Mike's dish (cheese soup thickened with hot dog buns) was the most disgusting food I'd ever seen on Top Chef--can you imagine having to taste it? Maybe they should have used the QF results to break the tie for who got sent home from the EC.

Actually I really like the thought of going to a place named "Proust". The food carts at Miss Market are a really good option there--I especially like Garden State's porchetta sandwich. But the carts there aren't open particularly late, as noted earlier.

I was a little surprised that Richard would show his book to a competitor, too. But I think it was more his boyish enthusiasm about food that makes him want to share what he's thinking about--I see it as coming from the same place as him helping someone use the pressure cooker or liquid nitrogen even when they're competing. Maybe it's not the best thing to do competitively (except in the Restaurant Wars challenge, where Richard got the win for helping everyone on his team), but it seems like a better attitude in the real world--would you rather have Richard or Mike on your team?

If anyone hasn't seen it, Wikipedia has a nice chart showing not only EC and QF wins and losses, but highs and lows as well:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Chef...
Antonia: 1 EC win, 5 highs, and 4 lows (one low has an asterisk because she had one of the best dishes, but was on the losing team).
Mike: 0 EC wins, 2 highs, and 2 lows.
Tiffany: 0 EC wins, 3 highs, and 6 lows.
That makes it look like Mike has been skating by in the middle a lot.
