Lunch--Westbound from Windsor Locks, CT

Blue Sky would be my pick, slightly off your route, but well worth it!

Meat House

I like it. I go to the one in Avon and I have been very happy with their marinated steak tips. They have Boars Head deli meats, some microbrews, and a great selection of local products. Breads, spreads, cheeses, etc from places right here in the Farmington Valley.
It is not my go to for meat but it is a spot we go to when we are in the area. The staff is very nice, almost too nice, it actually bugs my husband that they are so over the top!

3 breakfats, 2 lunches and 2 dinners in Newport. Please advise.

Another vote for Gary's. Chorizo omlette!

Hartford Family Reunion

I was going to suggest Mill on the River, there is a walk from the parking lot. Not long, but I seem to remember a few steps down, although there must be a ramp since I often see sr. citizens there.

Looking for the best destination restaurants in RI, Mass, and CT

Totally forgot about Night Kitchen! That is a great place

Since your topic on the Northern NE board has 57 replies, I am guessing that Chowhound has no issues with it so...

Not that my age is of any consequence, but I am comfortably over 40.

Restaurant Closings Avon/Simsbury/Canton

I will not get into a debate about OG, as this board is not for chain discussions, but they do not cook food there. It is the same as heating up a frozen dinner. So many great local places for italian food that is cooked to order.

Restaurant Closings Avon/Simsbury/Canton

WAIT! Did you really say Olive Garden and good old fashioned food in the same post. There is nothing good or old fashioned about OG. Pre-cooked food is not good.

Colony has been a bit of an institution on the Southern end of the state and I will welcome it over any chain any day.

anyone try Taste of Hartford yet?

Went to Vitos on the Park last night but we decided against the Taste menu, which turned out to be a mistake.
Antipasti and oysters were a hit but the entrees fell short of being worth the price. Shrimp and Scallop Risotto was a disappointment with undercooked rice mixed with a bl;and saffron butter sauce. This was not risotto by any definition,
The place was packed but service was good, just wish we had stuck to the Taste menu

We are going to Vitos on Saturday with friends. I will report back also.

Destination Dinner: 2 hours from Bradley Airport

We are looking for a weekend away and can not decide on a location. NY, Boston, Southern VT, and Newport are out as they are are our go to places. We want to try something new.
We do not ski or do winter sports, we prefer to check out local shops and enjoy a great meal.

I thought that we would try and plan our getaway around a meal. If you were to recommend a destination meal (in a destination worthy of a weekend away) what would you suggest?

Sally's Apizza is obviously better than Pepe's and Modern

I did not say it was a true statement. I said that I like Modern better.

If someone is trying to decide on which to choose, as an adult, they should read all the comments about why people prefer one over the other and base their choice on the OPINIONS that they have been provided and the ones that most closely resemble their personal preferences.

When it comes to opinions, there is no real true statement, just personal preference.

Sally's Apizza is obviously better than Pepe's and Modern

I have had a mozarella pie at all three and I like Modern better than Sally or Pepe's, so your statement that it is "obviously better" is not a true statement. If you had said that " I think" ..... then your statement would be correct.

I am glad that there are so many great pizza options in NH, there is one for everyone!

Pepe's in Manchester- Recent visitors?

Has anyone been recently? We have some friends in town this weekend and they would like to go, New Haven is not an option for us this weekend.

The last time we went the line was terrible and we will be going on Saturday night. I don't mind waiting a little bit but I do not want to wait outside for more than 20 minutes or so. Inside waiting is not a problem but it will be cold (Yes, I am a wimp)

Any insight on wait times recently?

Fine-ish Dining Farmington Valley (CT)

I agree almost completely.
The last meal we had at the Grist Mill will be our last meal there ever. Very disappointed.
2T is anything but pretentious, creative and inventive food in a small comfortable setting with service that is always friendly and welcoming.
I do disagree on Papacelle thought, I was underwhelmed at best.
Apricots is consistently good, I am not sure I would call it great, but never mediocre.

That being said, I am not sure any of these spots are a great choice for little ones

Modern Apizza...Seriously? That's the best you can do?

I have had Regina and it is better than Modern, no question.
But I also don't think that Regina is the best pizza in Boston, I am not sure Boston has a best pizza that is comparable to a good New Haven pie.

Pepe's and Sally's are the contenders in New Haven.

So to answer the OP's question, no, that is not the best we can do!

Catering Advice for Wedding - Fairfield County!

As a wedding planner in Fairfield county, I will agree with everyone else. The costs associated with catering an event are high and any caterer that will quote you $50 a person will not provide you with a wedding quality meal.
There are caterers that will certainly provide you with a meal and service for that price, but to give you that price you will have to compromise on either the type of food or have a buffet that will reduce your service costs.
I spend a good portion of my time explaining to brides the real costs of having a wedding in a location that requires outside catering. Rentals, service, etc add up very quickly and will increase a wedding budget instantly.

Flaggstead? Where is that?

Restaurant Closings Avon/Simsbury/Canton

I am a local business supporter snob, I'll take that!

Restaurant Closings Avon/Simsbury/Canton

Kitchen Nightmares is a TV show that is looking for ratings. They find the worst of the worst to get people to watch.
Just because a locally owned restaurant has been in business for many years with a menu that is consistent, doesn't mean it is a nightmare.
You can be underwhelmed, I said my tastes were simple, just more proof that I am not the snob you think I am!
Cheers!

Restaurant Closings Avon/Simsbury/Canton

I am hardly a food snob. I just do not like bad food at any restaurant or chain restaurants that compromise quality for profit. After 20+ years in the Farmington Valley Restaurant business, I have a pretty firm grasp on what I like and where I can get it. Nothing to do with being a snob at all. In fact, many here may call my food tastes simple.

I prefer to spend my money with local businesses, it has nothing to do with being a food snob, it has everything to do with making a choice where I spend my money.
You can talk all you want about Dakota, I worked there. There was nothing organic going on in that salad bar.
Actually here is where you can call me a snob, salad bars are gross and I won't eat at one.

I am now off to enjoy my Sunday! Cheers!

Restaurant Closings Avon/Simsbury/Canton

I just don't agree with your logic, but that is OK, we don't have to agree.

In a good economy crappy restaurants will close. All those that closed were crappy, in my opinion. A Great economy would not have saved them.

Restaurant Closings Avon/Simsbury/Canton

But you can not blame the economy for these closures. With so many great dining options, people will spend there money where the food and service are good.
I am a 4th generation Simsbury resident and my famiy and friends prefer to spend outrmoney with local restaurants that have consistent food and service.

I will happily have dinner at the Maple Tree or the Crown and Hammer before going to Route 44 to Bertuccis or Chilis. It is not the economy, it is people choosing local and good, in my opinion

I am not sure you can blame all of them on the economy

Dakota had not been good for at least 2 years, poor quality food, boring menu, and lazy staff. They would have survived had they were invested in a good product with good service.

Wasabi has been closed forever and even when they were open, they were never busy. When they first opened, we were there every other week, but they let the building go and didn't do any improvements. I do not want to eat dinner in a building that is falling apart.

Maragaritas never recovered from their health dept closure. I would bet that they would still be open had that not happened.

Boston Market is a tough one. I love Boston Market, but I tend not to make it my first choice because it is not grab and go. It involves sitting down and taking the time to eat a full meal and when I have the time and want to do that, I prefer to spend my money at a local restaurant.

There are still so many great options in the area; while I feel for the folks that were employed at these places, I am not surprised by any of them. Supporting local restaurant owners and chefs is easy enough to do in this area, great for the economy, and darn tasty!

Colony Pizza is great and I would welcome it up here. There may be a lot of pizza options but few are very good.

Creative Rehearsal Dinner IdeasNnear-ish to Springfield, MA Needed

The Federal is very good, very traditional, but the food is wonderful.
If you are looking for quirky, the Student Prince is quirky. Old world German but prking may be an issue
Max's Tavern might be a good spot but not sure if they can accomodate that many, but there is a club across the parking lot that the younger crowd could head to after.

Northampton would be a better choice but not sure if that is too long of a drive.

Need a new Special Occasion Dinner spot- Farmington Valley/ Hartford area

We have and like it very much.

A friend at work suggested The Federal in Agawam. I think we may try it.

Need a new Special Occasion Dinner spot- Farmington Valley/ Hartford area

I have an allergy to mushrooms, including truffles, and was told my On20 last year that they could not guarantee my food would not come in contact with them. They will not mke my list.

Need a new Special Occasion Dinner spot- Farmington Valley/ Hartford area

For a long time it was Metro Bis, then along came Mill a 2T and now I am looking for a new spot.

We still visit both but they are no longer special occasion and more like every so often so I am looking for somwhere different to take my husband for his birthday.
We will not drive more than 45 minutes from SImsbury. Thanks!
