Please help a new mom who's new to cooking too
^^This.
My MIL and mom come over with shepard's pie, chicken pot pie, mac and cheese...anything that can be shoved in the microwave when DH and I get home.
Chicken thighs, ramps, AND...(slow cooker fill in the blank)
Yellow, boiled chicken skin is horrible! I was going to brown the skin on high heat or broil, then put in the wet ingredients, just like you brown short ribs before braising.
Chicken thighs, ramps, AND...(slow cooker fill in the blank)
Oh, and I should chop the thighs to cut the bones in half and expose the marrow, right?
Chicken thighs, ramps, AND...(slow cooker fill in the blank)
DH hates anything "white winey." I could use a bright red, right? And I was thinking of either frying the thighs to brown the skin or removing altogther and frying separately. Because crisp chicken skin is just a great reason to be alive.

Now that I'm a new mom myself, I can answer this post more intelligently.
Slow cooker. Slow cooker. Slow cooker.
Get the kind with the stove top insert (it's worth the investment to always have one less pot to scrub). You can put up a meal in the AM and have it ready for dinner, and you don't have to make your cuts too small and pretty so it takes a lot less time. Or you can put on oatmeal before bed and it's ready for breakfast.
Also invest in a lot of BPA free plastic containers to freeze half of what you make. That way, you are not eating chili for three or four nights in one week.

Gorgeous ramps and a family size pack of skin-on thighs.
What else should go in this slow cooker meal for the work week?

Only thing I could find-

EDIT: From an anonymous commenter (so take it for what it's worth) at The AV Club's recap of this episode:
I spoke to Beverly's sister, who happens to run the San Diego Asian Film Foundation. She says that Beverly had a new baby, still in the breast-feeding phase, when she got the call from Top Chef to get on a plane within 24 hours. Apparently this batch of chefs weren't allowed to contact their families during the filming, so she was an emotional wreck.
Top Chef Texas - Ep. #4 - 11/23/11 (Spoilers)
Right on. I thought of military mothers, especially. Because of the numerous, frequently deployments in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, there must have been mothers in the same situation as Beverly, only without the ability to send home breastmilk, I imagine!
Top Chef Texas - Ep. #4 - 11/23/11 (Spoilers)
Um, I have to return to work on thursday after giving birth three moths ago. I will most certainly be emotional. Life isnt as simple as you can only have one thing or another. Moreover, to get the full benefit from breastfeeding you need to do it for two to three years. Wish I could put my career on hold for that long, but like I said life ain't so simple.
Top Chef Texas - Ep. #4 - 11/23/11 (Spoilers)
Seriously? If she just had a baby she should give up the chance of a lifetime?
Best Supermarket In USA: your nominations
Fairway in Red Hook is the best. Although all Fairways have excellent products and Fairway Stamford is nice and huge, Red Hook has the best staff, especially at the cheese counter. Even their parking lot guys are better.
Top Chef Texas - Ep. #4 - 11/23/11 (Spoilers)
Ick. I think it was too. Now we have to give her a break for crying. If that baby is new, being away from him or her gives Beverly a full-on lizard brain evolutionary excuse.

Two words: Dragon Dictation. Jeez, hope you feel ok! In the same vein (pun intended), what was Gail talking about when she mentioned a bagel accident from which she no longer has feeling in her thumb and can't open a beer??
Top Chef Texas - Ep. #4 - 11/23/11 (Spoilers)
I go back to work and have to start saving milk at the office next week. I feel better about doing this if someone can do it while being on TC. Which one is it?
Top Chef Texas - Ep. #4 - 11/23/11 (Spoilers)
Did someone say, "nobody take my breast milk," when they were claiming space at the house, or was it, "nobody take my brisket?" It was when Nyesha was taking the beer.
Why does the first batch of pancakes never brown evenly?
Every single time. No matter the pan, batter, stove, altitude, etc, the first batch comes out white with pocked brown spots but the subsequent batches are brown all over. How come??
Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #8 - 02/02/11 (Spoilers)
Mizrahi was a frequent guest on Molto Mario, and always asked pertinent questions. Plus he's sort of a New York institution. Just my $.02.
Stew Leonard's vs. Fairway
This is anecdotal, but I have never been able to afford a week's worth of groceries at WF I do major shopping now at FW, though...

Eh- didn't do hot dogs and sausage with nitrates anyway at home, so no big whoop. Except- I will now no longer get bacon I didn't purchase myself, and if I go to a ball game I guess am brown bagging it.
Best way to clean your knives
Quite. He's better trained now, but he thinks that loading the dishwasher and leaving all the hand washables piled in the sink = "cleaning the kitchen." Apparently, the elves are coming to clean the stuff in the sink?
End obesity, cheaply - "Wal-Mart Shifts Strategy to Promote Healthy Foods"
Not to mention how much fresher and therefore more nutritious your produce is if it doesn't have to travel thousands of miles to end up on your plate.
End obesity, cheaply - "Wal-Mart Shifts Strategy to Promote Healthy Foods"
It's not so much about the fuel you use driving 20 miles, it's the shipping from Chile, or the airplane from Hawai'i, to the Port of Los Angeles, then the 2000 miles by truck to the store. Shopping locally really refers to products that are sourced locally, grown locally, to conserve fossil fuels, minimize pollution, and encourage economic growth in your immediate area.

I've been told that it's soft cheese, and not just non-pastuerized cheese, because although that wheel of brie may have passed inspection in the warehouse, there is no telling how long it has been since it made it to the cheese counter. I am using this as an excuse to try new hard and semi-soft cheeses, though,
One more observation- why does everything seem so darn salty?

They are lowering the prices of the produce, I thought.

I know there are a lot of knowledgeable moms on this board!
I'm expecting, and finding some of the rules a little difficult to cope with. I am particularly vexed with the anti-listeriosis rules, such as no raw dairy, no soft cheese, and no deli meats. I'm also having trouble in restaurants. I actually got food poisoning yesterday from a restaurant meal. Which is terrifying.
I am keeping it as organic as I can. I am taking my lunch to work. I am drinking tons of water. I have cut out all artificial sweetners and caffeine.
But jeez, I just want a turkey sandwich or a goat cheese omelet!
What are 'hound moms' experiences with "the rules," and what did you find helped you out with morning sickness the other wonderful GI side effects of pregnancy?
Best way to clean your knives
The problem with the Globals is the 30/70 angle of the edge. The whole thing got bent at the top, rust spots which I couldn't remove with Barkeepers Friend, and big dings in the edge. I still have and use it, but can't get it true and am worried about taking it in b/c of the 30/70 thing. The thermometer, however, went right in the hazardous waste bin! He still uses the non-stick pan, but I refuse. I bought a new one.
Best way to clean your knives
Actually, the tears were mine. He's ruined quite a few kitchen items as a matter of fact. Thermometers should not go in the dishwasher. Nor should non stick. Nor copper. The tears were my frustration in this.
How long have you been a CH, and has it made you a better person?
Not sure how OT this is, but can I tell you one of my very favorite things about CH? I can post a question about something I plan on making that day, then go back as I am making it to get answers t my queries, or help with an idea.
