Citra...360 franklin ave, hartford, ct
Citra is a Caribbean/Guyanese restaurant that is about 1 month old...they need to work out a few kinks...most to do with waitstaff that appear to be timid and not informed well enough concerning the menu items. Four of us went there last weekend, and the food was pretty good..... the chef made a tableside appearance with his wine specials, which were costly and out of line for the restaurant...he made suggestions as to what we might choose to eat.
We had the Velvety Pumpkin Bisque, but the promised flavors fell short...basically flavorless.
The entrees we tried were very good to excellent... the snapper with onion marmalade was delicious, the curried grouper received RAVE reviews and the clean plate was a testament, and the sea scallops were a BIG hit. Nice melding of flavors.
The bread was not remarkable, but the flavored olive oil and homemade hummus much improved the bread.
We did not have dessert, but the menu sounded promising....
The couple started this place with no outside advertising, and are trying with word of mouth...there were not enough patrons at the time we were there to really spread the word...the Courant gave them a 2 1/2 stars after the first couple of weeks in business.... I agree with their assessment, but think that CITRA has potential and worth trying.

Still River Cafe in CT? [moved from Tristate board]
A group of us went to Still River Cafe this past weekend....and we SO ENJOYED our meal...the atmosphere is simple but elegant, the service we had was flawless, the food was delicious...only a couple "complaints".. Half of the group ordered the Georges Bank cod platter...the chowder was heavenly, the fish cake was phenomenal, but the poached filet and polenta were bland. The beef platter had Kobe beef and it was "tough".... but none of us let that interfere with our experience, and we all agreed that going back there is a must. Though a bit pricey, we felt that we got our money's worth. A touch that we all appreciated was that jazz wafted through the air...the music did not take over the room. We did not realize that we had a room full of fellow diners, as we were able to converse among ourselves with ease and comfort. It is worth the drive!! Still River Cafe is right on the mark!!!
