CAVIAR IN MOSCOW
My tip is that you need to work on the caviar thing in Moscow. You need to have friends, local ones who know their stuff - you know, the type with connections. That way you'll get a hold of a whole tub of the stuff, in original package, at about half the price.
Then get those friends round your place - one of them will always know how to make real blinis - stock up on sour cream and vodka and off you go. Instant feast.
Caviar is not for restaurants.
Or go to the market (can't now remember the specific one where they sell caviar in the indoor part) with a local friend who will help you get the best deal.
Where to splurge in Hong Kong?
Splurge but not stuffy eh:
Man Wah for fine Cantonese with a twist, top of Mandarin Oriental
China Club: colonial classic, great experience
Amber: fashionable interior with smart food at Landmark MOriental
Atelier Robuchon: 3 star Michelin Chef in Landmark building (also Pierre in MO)
Frog Face Fish on Wyndham serves excellent fish
La Terrasse top of Old Bailey has a lovely sedate ambience about it, it's very intimate with friendly service, loved the experience
Just for fun? Take 'em to one of the amazing sea food restaurants at the Lamma Island pier
Tips from trip to Moscow
The place you refer to is most likely Yalki Palki, a chain of restaurants serving cheap and cheerful "local" food. Definitely a good bet if you're not looking to pay the standard restaurant prices in Moscow. Another cheap way to dine in Moscow is to go to one of the many baked potato street vendors. Brilliant in winter.
Mostly however, I would recommend Goodmans (steakhouse), Scandinavia (int'l), Starlite Diner, Akademia (Italian), the many Georgian restaurants (order shashlik in all its forms).
