If you think Terra Rustica is better food than Birdsall House or Quiet Man, I question your judgement. To say the least. And no reason to be a jerk. Feel free to express your opinion in a pleasant manner.

I find your reaction to my suggesting Grouchy Gabe's very strange. You say the food is good but that the decor isn't even "diner-level." But you heartily recommend The Tavern. Grouchy Gabe's is much more inviting and pleasant than The Tavern! You also like Wobble Cafe, which hardly has any more decor than Grouchy Gabe's. I really don't get what your idea of appropriate decor is. Gabe's is casual for sure, but it has a nice space, big windows, a lovely tin ceiling, nice paint colors, and a changing display of photos. It is far more appealing than Grandma's (which in my experience has dreadful pies but very good breakfast fare). I'm dumbfounded.

Funny. we often drive to Peekskill to eat out. The town has some very nice places.

In addition to the above:

In Croton, Grouchy Gabe's has good brunch stuff

In Peekskill, for lunch stuff Bean Runner Cafe, Quiet Man, and the Peekskill Brewery are all good. (Birdsall House, mentioned above, has the best Sunday brunch in town)

Mt Kisco craft beer?

The best place around that I know of is Birdsall House in Peekskill, which I realize is a bit of trek from Mt Kisco. But they have a good selection of craft beers and pretty good locavorian food, too. If you're that area, check it out.

For bottles, the beer and soda place in Yorktown Heights (on Commerce street) has a good selection of minbrews.

Food trucks?

Sharion's D'Lish Dish in Yorktown Heights has gotten good press as a gourmet food truck.

The menu looks interesting:

And it got a good write up in Small Bites:

Japanese Hibachi-style restaurants in Westchester?

Okinawa in Yorktown Heights is pretty good. Its related to the one in Mt. Kisco but I think it is actually better. The space is great, and the sushi is quite good, too.

New Restaurant in Yorktown.....

We went there Friday night and it was good. Not great, but good--slightly interesting takes on Italian classics, done pretty well (based on our dishes, at least). My seafood stew was really quite good, all of the seafood was cooked just right and there was a lot of it. The sauce was tasty, but not at all overpowering. My wife's roasted vegetable and ricotta ravioli was very tasty too, although she felt the Bolognese sauce overwhelmed it a bit. And the mixed salad was delicious--ten times better than the salad we had last weekend at Lexington Square. So, given that the prices were moderate and the place is pleasant, we'll return.

Any Westchester/CT Restaurants with live MUSIC???

In Peeksill, Division Street Grill has nice music weekend nights and good food. 12 Grapes has music too, but it ranges from jazz to rock so you'd need to check to see who was performing. The Bean Runner Cafe has very good jazz, but the menu is more limited.

Asagao Sushi in Croton

I really like the sushi at Neo in Mt Kisco too. And Hirame in Yorktown Heights is quite good, too--and Okinawa in YH is pretty good. And Blue in Kisco isn't bad...

So, as much as Croton is totally desperate for new restaurants, sushi isn't really what we need. Maybe Anton's restaurant will be better than the unfortunate signage makes one think...

A&P stores closing; apparently one in Yorktown Heights

"Barmes & Noble in Mohegan Lake, Borders in Mt. Kisco."

That was my point--as I said, there "isn't a major bookstore anywhere nearby to the west or south." Which leaves a large area for which YH would be much closer than going up to B&N or east to Borders.

As for Shoprite, I can only tell you my experiences with the Croton one and what Croton residents have repeatedly told me--the meat and produce is nowhere as good as the YH A&P and there is less variety of products across the board. When we go to the Croton Shoprite we always end up going to A&P the next day to get the things Shoprite didn't have. And, as I said, Croton friends routinely drive to YH to do their shopping there. Perhaps other shoprite stores are better.

A&P stores closing; apparently one in Yorktown Heights

My Croton friends come for both the YH A&P and Turcos, as well as Mrs Green's. They complain horribly about the Croton ShopRite. I only go to the ShopRite on the rare occasion to grab something on the way home from the train, but the items always seems sub par to me. Now, Zeytina, on the other hand, is great and has things you won't find in Turco's or A&P or the Yorktown Mrs. Green's.

I disagree about the bookstore. That location draws people from a large radius and there isn't a major bookstore anywhere nearby to the west or south.

A&P stores closing; apparently one in Yorktown Heights

The A&P that is closing is the one in YH next to the Big K. The A&P in the Triangle Center is staying open--and is excellent. There were two A&P's in Yorktown Heights literally a stone's throw from each other.

Were is the "Whole Foods-style market"??

A&P stores closing; apparently one in Yorktown Heights

You think shoprite is "far superior" to A&P? My only shoprite experience is the one in Croton, which is really very poor. Our Croton friends drive to Yorktown to do their major shopping.

I think a bookstore would do very well there, actually. The one in JV only died because it was a Walden Books, and they have closed locations all over, including a number in Manhattan.

Thyme in Cortlandt Manor

I just saw an article about this place in Small Bites. It's in Yorktown Heights and the co-chef is Neil Ferguson, from Monteverde in Cortlandt. It features "comfort food." Sounds interesting.

Ethiopian in Mount Kisco?

The restaurant just go a "Worth It" in the The New York Times (second from best rating). The reviewer raves about the food and the hospitality:

Just had a terrible experience at Birdsall House in Peekskill -- wondering if others have had better experiences?

Birdsall just got a very good review in the New York Times. It got a "Worth It" rating (the second best) and the review is very, very positive.

http://events.nytimes.com/2010/07/18/nyregion/18dinewe.html?ref=westchester

Also, while one of the owners is from NYC, the other is a Peekskill native.

Just had a terrible experience at Birdsall House in Peekskill -- wondering if others have had better experiences?

The reviewer doesn't seem at all bothered by the "Where the Hell is Peekskill" comment--he uses it to illustrate the point that many wonder about the owners' "mysterious" move to open a place in Peekskill given their success in Manhattan. Personally, I wasn't at all offended by the comment either--the guys just sunk a huge hunk of cash and energy into a business in town, so any making fun of the place is obviously self-deprecating.

As to the review, yes very mixed indeed. I agree that the beet salad was "absolutely flawless." My burger was excellent and served rare (as ordered)--but the reviewer obviously had a bad burger (twice). When we went, 3 of our 4 dishes were quite good--and one wasn't. So I'm not shocked to hear that there are other hits and misses on the menu.

Local food sources in Northern Westchester

Garrison is in Putnam county.

And thanks to everyone for all of the additions to the list!

Fantastic yogurt!!!

I just found the site--have never been myself:

http://www.rawlife.memberlodge.org/

It looks like a member-only place, as opposed to Table market.

Fantastic yogurt!!!

I get Maple Hill Creamery yogurt delivered every Monday (along with fresh milk from another dairy farm and organic grass-fed beef). The company delivers throughout Westchester.

http://hudsonmilk.com/

The yogurt really is quite addictive. The websitte lists stores all over where you can get it, include Table in Bedford Hills and Raw Life food coop in Ossining:

Beer bar near Somers/Northern Westchester?

This probably isn't at all complete, but this website lists bars and their beer lists:

http://www.beermenus.com/boroughs/westchester

It includes the relatively new Birdsall House, also in Peekskill, which has a great list.

Just had a terrible experience at Birdsall House in Peekskill -- wondering if others have had better experiences?

Finally got to Birdsall last night for the first time. The space is really nice, very attractive and well designed. It was quite crowded but the vibe was great. The beer selection is impressive (when I couldn't decide between three options, our waitress offered to bring me samples of each. She did, and I finally picked one.) Our food was mostly delicious. The beet salad and the chicken liver pate were both excellent and very well done. The Hemlock Hill Burger was about as good as a burger gets. The lamb was okay, but I didn't feel like the dish worked. We were too full for deserts. As far as the great sides debate, they are clearly marked on the menu as being $4 each--and who really cares. We skipped fries with the burger, but if you really need fries with your burger, $14 seems reasonable for a well prepared, local, organic, beef burger with yummy onions and condiments.

All in all, I loved Birdsall House. It is exactly the kind of place the area needs and is a great addition to Peekskill. I probably won't go often since it didn't feel that kid-appropriate (it was a rare date night), but I will when I can. I certainly hope that the petty griping and sniping on this site doesn't keep anyone from trying the place!

Need a nice place to eat in northern Westchester

Lexington Square in Mt. Kisco is good, not too adventurous or expensive, but feels kinda "special." The Flying Pig in Mt Kisco is also good and very American (farm to table). For something slightly more interesting, Via Vanti! (also is Kisco) has good northern Italian fare.
Also, The Heights Bistro in Yorktown Heights is quite good, nice atmosphere, and reasonable prices. And I third Peter Pratt's in Yorktown Height (great patio if the weather is nice).

2010 Outdoor Farmers' Market Season - Westchester

Is the Katonah-Lewisboro market still on? I could not find any reference to it. Last year it was run by Community Markets, but it is no longer on their site. I knew about the indoor winter market, but I searched quite a bit for info on the outdoor summer one and couldn't find anything about it. Do you know who runs it?

New green market to come to Cortlandt?

I think you mean the site of the old motel on 202 next to the Taconic. There was a proposal about 2 years ago for an upscale shopping plaza there, but it died with the economy. Now there is a proposal from CostCo for a store there. I beleive it is being reviewed by the town.

Ethiopian in Mount Kisco?

Ate at Lalibela last night and had a really lovely experience. The place is very pleasant and the owner and all the wait staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We got there at just before 7:00 and it was crowded, but we were seated after just a few minutes. (Later on, their was a small line of people waiting for seats). Our waitress asked if we had questions about Ethiopian food and she answered our questions helpfully. The menus are nice and include helpful background info. We had the avocado salad, which was perfect for a warm night (though a bit of a challenge to grab with the injera bread), and the sambusa was really excellent. Then we had the combo. All the dishes were extremely tasty and the blend of spices worked well together. The meat dishes were a bit too spicy for our 9 year-old, but we had the foresight to order him the burger as a backup. (However, the younger boy at another table seemed to be enjoing the food very much, so it all depends on the kid.) All in all, it was an excellent experience and we will certainly be back soon.

Anywhere near Peekskill for real fried chicken?

Memphis Mae's in Croton has southern fried chicken. I wouldn't call myself a fried chicken expert (or lover), but I've had it and it is quite good. The sides (cole slaw, mashed, corn salad, greens, fried pickles, etc) are even better. And the beer list is good, too.
