favorite baking book to give as a bridal shower gift?

I would get her the 'Tartine' cookbook. Many simple and interchangeable recipes that people will swoon over. I would also see about getting her a decent scale. If I'd had a scale from the get go, I think I could have avoided a lot of ruined recipes that, at one point, turned me off to baking.

Modern Apizza...Seriously? That's the best you can do?

There are two sides to every story. I've been a few times, and I have to say that the people here have never been anything but nice. Something about the story doesn't sound right to me. I'm not saying they're lying, but Flo has a pretty good grip on everything as it relates to the seating and times for carryout orders.

If I have one gripe, it's that the bathroom is pretty gross.

Honolulu Izakaya

Went to Sushi Izakaya Gaku for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and have to say that I walked away pretty impressed. Fresh, Clean, Cozy, Interesting menu. Hell, I even enjoyed taking a leak in the bathroom. I will warn that is isn't difficult to wrack up a bill. Get there early, the wait gets out of hand starting around 8pm. You can make a reservation if you're willing to eat before 8.

Top Chef - Texas - Last Chance Kitchen (spoilers)

To win that many LCK's in a row? These people are getting mowed down week in and week out. It's not luck. If she's somehow able to make it all the way through I think that, in and of itself, is a pretty incredible feat. You make it sound like she was that self espousing cat that got thrown out in the very beginning that couldn't butcher meat.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #10 - 01/11/12 (Spoilers)

"Have we seen anyone go out of their comfort zone?"
-----------------------------
Have we seen anyone IN their comfort zone? I don't know what the hell would happen if you took them to where you're suggesting.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #10 - 01/11/12 (Spoilers)

That's just it. I'm not hardcore, but shit, if you're gonna cite it get it right. He was saying it with a straight face. He might as well have been saying "chipol-tay".

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #10 - 01/11/12 (Spoilers)

As many times as she needs to. If the others are going to put things like "deconstructed Cracker Jack" out there, why not? It doesn't do a damn thing for us viewers, but it's advancing her cause.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #10 - 01/11/12 (Spoilers)

Smart girl. Gutted his ass by choosing Heather. He was beat before they even started. I'm more nervous about when the low hanging fruit is depleted. The caliber of chef is going to be markedly better in the coming weeks. If Chris gets bounced next week, that'll be the last pushover she sees. I'm pulling for her.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #10 - 01/11/12 (Spoilers)

She had me at "sex in the mouth".

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #10 - 01/11/12 (Spoilers)

To the ones who had (or yearned for) a sense of belonging, I think that's probably true. I went to three different high schools, so it was just a pit stop on the way to college for me. I know what happened in high school really affected my sisters. It's a tough time for a lot of people.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #10 - 01/11/12 (Spoilers)

Ain't that the truth. When in doubt, it's Beverly's fault. (Not that she seems to mind shouldering any, and all, blame.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #10 - 01/11/12 (Spoilers)

The philistine that he is......

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #10 - 01/11/12 (Spoilers)

They're all narratives, it's just a matter of which one you choose to like. Obviously the two of you don't like the same one.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #10 - 01/11/12 (Spoilers)

Yeah, what was that all about? Not only was she wrong for offering her rude opinion, but she didn't even know that Lindsey would have most likely have been sent packing if they had lost. Seems like she's strategically playing up to Lindsey for friendship.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #10 - 01/11/12 (Spoilers)

Clearly you're with the Bravo! production crew and have inside information. Is there any reason to watch now?

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #10 - 01/11/12 (Spoilers)

Well, unfortunately he is, and coaching kids. Lovely.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #10 - 01/11/12 (Spoilers)

The Start Trek bit was highly amusing (but not at all surprising).

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #10 - 01/11/12 (Spoilers)

Man if it was me and Lindsey was bitching at me I'd be standing there saying, "Hey b*tch! You smell that? I think it's burning fish. Now get the hell out my kitchen and go do your job!"

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #10 - 01/11/12 (Spoilers)

Yet they CONTINUE to give her responsibility for their stuff! It's like dropping your 10 year old son off at Neverland Ranch and wondering where you went wrong.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #10 - 01/11/12 (Spoilers)

Prediction: If Nyesha makes to the final, she is going to ROLL the competition. It means she will have laid waste to every damn one of those chefs at some point. Doing real cooking instead of this 100 degree, gummi bear, melodramatic, catering bullshit. She'll be fresh, inspired, and thinking about what she's going to do if and when she makes it to the final. The other two chefs will be beat down, exhausted, and struggling for mental strength. The girl is soooo fun to watch on Last Chance Kitchen.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #10 - 01/11/12 (Spoilers)

I think it is was a matter of interpretation. The judges said it was slightly overcooked but didn't really seem to think it was anything egregious. That's the problem with someone cooking your food though, isn't it? IMO not the best choice of protein if someone else is cooking for me.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #10 - 01/11/12 (Spoilers)

SPOILER ALERT - It wasn't shown in next week's previews but no one is eliminated in the episode. Beverly finally snaps when Sarah quips, "You're not marking the meat right." Beverly promptly grabs her by the hair and puts face to grill screaming, "How about that?!?!? Is that marked properly for you?!?!?" *Grayson watches with glee*

As they cart Sarah away - freshly branded - Bev turns her attention to Lindsey and snaps, "Go ahead drop one more f bomb at me. I dare you! It's not like there isn't plenty of neck to grab!"

Most Americans don't like to sharpen the stainless knives they have. So now they going to suddenly spring for knives that require even MORE care?

You're either a knife person, or you're not. Even knife people reach a limit on the number they should have. Those Japanese knives aren't going anywhere.

Macaron class?

They now have a a tab on their website, with prices. Here is the link:

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #9 - 01/04/12 (Spoilers)

I've actually been smoking them outside for two hours, and then finishing them off wrapped in foil for the last two hours, then a light glaze for a half hour. All at 250. This time of year it gets dark too early, so its just easier finishing them in the oven in the kitchen where I can see.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #9 - 01/04/12 (Spoilers)

What do you use the broiler for? Caramelizing the top of the ribs?

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #9 - 01/04/12 (Spoilers)

I hadn't thought about when he actually put the rub on. If the rub was applied early on, yeah, that makes for one hammy rack of ribs. Definitely barbecue 101 stuff right there. That's just mind boggling to me that a chef of that caliber would make that mistake.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #9 - 01/04/12 (Spoilers)

It looked like everyone was pulling from a box full of "magic goodies". I don't know if that stuff is normally there.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #9 - 01/04/12 (Spoilers)

I've cooked and eaten a lot of barbecued ribs in my life, I don't ever recall anyone making them even close to being considered "overly salty", let alone inedible. How can someone on a show like this swing and miss so horribly? I obviously don't know what their timeline was, but couldn't he have saved them with some type of sweet glaze?

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #9 - 01/04/12 (Spoilers)

See above.
