Peppercorns

If you go to Save On for example, don't go to the regular spice aisle. Check the asian or indian aisle. They have big bags really cheap.

Capers

Great, I will take a look there. Thanks

Red Boat fish sauce

Anyone know if this product can be found in Vancouver?

Best chocolate cake in Vancouver?

I ended up ordering a basic chocolate cake from Fratelli Bakery in New West. We were unimpressed with it! The cake itself is very basic and the icing is just awful. I don't recommend it at all.

Tres leche cake in Vancouver

awesome! not far from me. I have to check it out.

Best chocolate cake in Vancouver?

We went to Black Rook Bakehouse this morning to pick up the beef stout meat pies. They were sold out! Apparently there was a write up somewhere and they were flooded with people buying the meat pies. They had some nice looking muffins so we bought a couple of those. The croissant was excellent! We also brought home a piece of the black and tan cake. I have to be honest and say this is not for us. It's all layers of buttercream icing and not much cake in between. I don't think we let it sit long enough so the icing was still quite solid but nevertheless, the cake is mostly icing. The piece was not big but the piece of carrot cake is huge! We'll try that later and I'll let you know. We would definitely return to try the meat pies. Funky place! We spoke with the woman and she said she started baking at 3:00 am! As a sidenote, we did sample the Whole Foods chocolate cake last week. It was very good.

Best chocolate cake in Vancouver?

My hubby's birthday is also coming up and he wants chocolate cake. Except he wants basic cake with seafoam icing. Its something his mom used to make and its a tricky icing to make. What type of icing does the topanga chocolate cake have? Just curious...

Fish sauce

Thanks, I will look for these!

Fish sauce

Can anyone recommend a good fish sauce from T&T supermarket? There are so many choices but I hear they're not all safe.

What's the healthiest oil for deep frying?

We used Spectrum unrefined peanut oil to fry our chicken schnitzel and it was great. No more canola oil for me! Our fire alarm kept going off tho and then I found out I should be using refined oil for high heat frying. It worked out fine with the unrefined tho.

Cookware for ceramic stove

I ended up buying a Cuisinart stainless steel 5 qt pot with flat bottom. It was a bit pricey for $60 at Winners but it has a nice weight to it. I'll see how it works out on the stove and then maybe purchase a couple more.

What's the healthiest oil for deep frying?

I'm trying to decide which oil to use for frying chicken schnitzel. I want something with a neutral taste. Schnitzel has to be cooked at fairly high heat so its crispy and golden. Oh and I want an organic oil so plan to check Whole Foods tomorrow. Does peanut oil taste like peanuts?

Cookware for ceramic stove

Can anyone suggest some good basic pots for a ceramic stove? Its a vacation condo so I don't want anything too expensive but I don't want to ruin the stove top either. Many thanks for any suggestions.

Ricotta salata

I would like to buy some Ricotta salata. I've never heard of it but I need it for a recipe I found. Anyone know where I can buy this cheese? It's not the regular ricotta but its harder so it can be grated.

What to do with pepper leaves?

They do look like that. Small green leaves with stems. The bags were packed with leaves. Thanks for the info all.

What to do with pepper leaves?

I have been shopping for my produce lately at Langley Farm Market in Burnaby. I keep seeing bags of pepper leaves and they look really fresh and green. I'm not sure what kind of pepper or what you can do with them but I'd like to know! Can I use them like spinach or saute with a stir fry?

Lamb butcher surrey area?

Try Heritage Meats across from Willowbrook but they are expensive. Excellent quality meats tho.

Non-GMO rice

Where can I find non-gmo basmati or other rice besides Lundberg brand?

Rice cooker help

I'm in the market for my very first rice cooker. I have been looking at all the Zojirushi ones on Amazon. Too much to choose from! I thought I had one picked out but apparently it needs a battery change every few years and has to be sent to the manufacturer to do so? Can anyone suggest a good rice cooker? I understand some cookers can be used for cakes and porridge as well and would love that option.

Where to eat in Richmond

Thank you. We need to stay close to the airport so I may check out Pier73.

Where to eat in Richmond

So I'm looking for a great place to eat near the airport. We have already eaten at the Fairmont Airport so want something else. If its Chinese food, has to be really safe as I don't want to be sick on our flight the next morning!

New Chongqing location in Burnaby?

Got food to go. There was a delay on the bus so it took me 45 minutes to get home. The food was good. I think it would be really good to eat in. The bus ride didn't help. Will definitely go back. They don't do dim sum tho. Same ginger beef and spicy green beans. It's a nice little restaurant.

Dining Options in Long Beach/Tofino/Ucuelet with children

Sobo is great but now closed until February. Don't miss Wildside Grill at the Live to Surf Plaza. BEST food! Open year round. Honestly, everything we have tried was fantastic. Google it to find their web site.

Where is everyone getting their organic meat?

I love Heritage Meats in Langley but its not cheap. I make the trip out there once in a while to stock up.

New Chongqing location in Burnaby?

Please tell me the new chongqing opening up at Kingsway and Nelson in Burnaby is the same as the Commercial location! I can't get enough of their ginger beef and spicy green beans. I just don't always feel like going all the way there.

Guy Fieri in Vancouver - I'm sure you've all heard! [moved from BC]

Major disappointment - Vera's in Gastown

It's been a while since we ate at Vera's on Denman. We were stuck downtown Monday when the skytrain was out of order so we walked around Gastown looking for food. I'm giving it one star for the fries which were hot and good (good, not great!). The meat patty was smaller then what I remember and quite dry. The toppings were not good at all and all 3 of us agreed the buns were stale for sure. It is a shame to serve food like this.
