Vegetarian restaurant in Cleveland?

Does Cleveland have a good vegetarian restaurant for dinner? Does not have to be vegan. Near University Circle/Cleveland Clinic would be nice but we'll have a car to go farther afield. There's someplace called Flaming Ice Cube - worth trying? What's the atmosphere there?

GOOD Jewish Bakery in Brooklyn???

Farther afield, there are two in America that I know of: Zeman's Bakery in Oak Park, MI and Cohen's in Ellenville, NY. Both carry "kimmel bread" - your corn rye. Zeman's has onion and kaiser rolls and salt sticks. Cohen's has mohn strudel to make you weep. You can order by mail from Cohen's.

Cleveland weekend - "flexodox" suggestions welcome

Thanks everyone for your replies! I'm just circling back to this thread.
I've changed plans to arrive in Cleveland late Saturday night, & stay through Tuesday. However I'll be back frequently, and will keep in mind these Shabbat suggestions for future visits.
I understand that the Conservative synagogue nearest Cleveland Clinic has an apartment that can be rented for Shabbat.
Has anyone dined at Sababa? The menu looks good.
Although it isn't kosher-certified, also wonder if anyone here knows a vegan place downtown called "Flaming Ice Cube." Thanks again.

Cleveland weekend - "flexodox" suggestions welcome

I will be staying in a hotel near Cleveland Clinic over a long weekend this summer. I'll be looking for carry-out meals and restaurants as well as Shabbat services. I'd be open to any denomination but prefer traditional davening and don't drive on Shabbat. Likewise, I'm fine with either non-heckshered vegetarian/dairy or kosher meat restaurants/sources. I would rather eat fruit, nuts, hummus and crackers all weekend than bother with mediocre kosher TV-type dinners. Any thoughts?

Vegetarian Indian near Edison New Jersey

Looking to meet a friend halfway between NYC and Philadelphia for a great vegetarian Indian dinner mid-week. Edison NJ looks like the locale, and we prefer "pure veg" restaurants (no meat on the menu, but dairy is fine). It doesn't have to be fancy but should be relaxed. We love south Indian cuisines best. Suggestions?

Yeast dough hamantashen in NYC environs?

can anyone recommend good yeast dough hamantashen in the New York area? We don't like the cookie kind, and I don't have time to bake this year! I've seen a couple that are basically enormous danishes - not for dessert, and they weren't very good either. And we are only interested in poppy seed filling!

Posto 22 Italian in New Rochelle

Had a very nice meal at Posto 22 on Division St. next to Coromandel! Delicious salads. We also enjoyed thin crust eggplant pizza and papparadelle with mushrooms, customized for us as a vegetarian dish. It was crowded at 8 p.m. Service was attentive. Nice wine & cocktails list. Very welcome at this location!

Middle East, N. Westchester or Putnam

Maybe too far south for you: Grill Point on North Ave. in New Rochelle. Also noticed a reference to Hilltop in Purchase on the TriState board.

Requesting Teaneck update

Is Pasta Factory pretty much as it was a year ago? The back room accomodated a large group for Sunday lunch, but the food and service were mediocre (not nearly up to the quality of a previous Saturday night audition).

I have to plan another Sunday lunch in the area for about 30 people and wonder if there's a better choice. Some folks on this board have referred to Piccanti but there are no Chowhound reviews - just one online review on another site saying that the food was terrible. How does it compare to Pasta Factory?

Any other area suggestions? Are there any traditional dairy menus in the area? It's easier to get a kosher pizza than a blintz these days! But even a nice, sit-down pizza and salad place could be okay - or a meat restaurant. Thanks!

Manchego Cheese

kosheritalia.com offers a variety of imported cheeses and other interesting food items on line. I don't see Manchego on their list, though.

How to pronouce hamentaschen and find a good version?

if that's Cohen's in Ellenville you have the world's best poppy seed strudel and kimmel bread - but I've never been around for Purim

hamantasch is singular - hamantaschen is plural

How to pronouce hamentaschen and find a good version?

mohn is yiddish for poppy seed. For the chinese new year, the Chinese bakeries sell "moon cakes" - round pastries filled with ground and sweetened lotus seeds!!! Could be the influence of the the Kaifeng Jews....

How to pronouce hamentaschen and find a good version?

For me it's all about the yeast dough version - the cookie ones are just thick cookies to me. This will be a controversial view, but I've always thought they were just easier to make, so they've taken over. The yeast ones take hours. but it shouldn't be a heavy danish either - the yeast dough should be ultralight and ultra thin slightly crisp, delicately soft, and only slightly sweet and the triangles quite small and dainty (though stuffed with poppy seed filling (exclusively)). I don't know if they're sold anywhere even in NY any more - we bake our own. You can make them dairy with butter and sour cream, but we do the parve ones.
I've read that the word Hamantaschen was a play on words - (Yiddish) Mohn taschen means poppy seed pockets . Happy purim!

Hard request: Vegetarian in the Yucatan or Oaxaca

Las Bougambillas is a B&B owned by the family that also owns La Olla - it's a great place to stay for a vegetarian, as the kitchen is lard-free and the breakfasts include outrageous fresh juices, different daily fruit plates, and cold and hot vegetarian offerings - enough to keep you going all day, though you'll want to stop for the comida!. Most upscale restaurants, at least in the center of town, seem to use sanitized organic vegetables, cook with olive or vegetable oil, and offer a lot of vegetarian dishes and salads with rich local flavor, even without meat. Los Danzantes puts a green leaf next to veg items on its menu and offers plenty of mezcal without the worm. (Lovely for lunch by the way). La Biznaga had a great vegetarian soup on its menu - hard to find. Quite different from Oaxaca 25 years ago when I ate beans and tortillas and asked no questions about either!

Fairway coming to Westchester, could it be true?

Maybe I'm one of them - I'm usually in a rush! I love shopping there - makes me feel like I'm still a New Yorker, and I've gotten some nice cooking tips from the other shoppers comparing fungus varieties etc.

Kosher take out in New Canaan CT?

G&H is in Greenwich, New Canaan & Westport. As far as I know, the only kosher food in Stamford is at a few bakeries, the JCC, & the Stop & Shop - please correct me if I'm wrong! By the way, which is the best of the bakeries?

If you were moving out of NY, where would you eat?

Mrs. Stahl's is sold at Mr. Bagel in Riverdale and elsewhere around town - call the shop in Coney Island to find out where. The hot cherry cheese knish at Yonah Schimmel on a cold night was a great NY memory once, but I gather YS has gone way downhill. I see on the web that Yonah S can be ordered on line however - maybe still better than nothing in Hawaii! There are also some knish recipes on line, and they don't look too difficult.

Kosher take out in New Canaan CT?

I've looked wistfully at the carryout menus in ads by Garelick & Herbs in Greenwich, which is haute Jewish but not kosher. Finally I called, and the manager told me that their New Canaan store has the ability to do kosher prepared food with a day's notice or two. Has anyone tried this? Would love your feedback.

Pizza & Salad in Lower Westchester

What do people like for a simple night out in the Pelham-to-Portchester band? We were looking for pizza, salad and a glass of wine & a teeny bit of atmosphere. Went to Mama Francesca's - good, as usual, but are there other places to try?

Fairway coming to Westchester, could it be true?

I've been shopping at Fairway forever. Moving to Westchester has meant years of creative choreograpy to include it in the loop - I mean commuting to Manhattan by car, arrival timed to alternate side parking schedules on the UWS, then a subway to work - or a stop on the way home from a class - or a "detour" from the Bronx - or a field trip with kids --- just to be able to fill up the trunk with Fairway PRODUCE, fish, cheeses, olives, oils, spices, coffee, and bread! It does save me shopping at 10 separate places in Westchester. And I've never met a rude employee. Laylaq, thank you for your advocacy!!!

Recommendations for nice place in Riverdale or Westchester?

I went back to Riverdelight in January for dinner - and it was good! Maybe I was there on an off night last time, or maybe they have improved. Ginger Grill is also reliable.

Kosher butcher in Lower Westchester

Try Nathan's in Riverdale - a little old-fashioned shop on 235th where you can watch the butcher cut the meat for you. The quality is great, everything is fresh, and prices are fair. He has some (Wise) organic poultry and meat, and will deliver a big order to Westchester. Great advice on barbeque preparations! You have to ask him to soak and salt items cut to order. I don't know what the certification is - the Wise and some other things are glatt, but not the entire shop.

Out to dinner in Chicago?

Where can I take a college student for a great kosher dinner in Chicago? From the web I gather most restaurants are in Skokie. I hope for good food, relaxed pace, comfortable atmosphere, decent service and an acceptable glass of wine! Any type of cuisine is ok. Some reviews would be much appreciated. Is Shallots worth the freight? DiNali's has gotten positive notice on this board. Taboun Grill in north Chicago gets good reviews on Shamash.
