Real Buffalo Wings Needed
It's Duff's, not Duffy's. Duff's has far superior wings to Anchor Bar.
What do they ship? Frozen wings and pre-made sauce?
Have motorcycle. Will travel for good food. (DC, MD, VA and WVA)
Take 15 up to the PA border and go to Chubbies for their smoked fried chicken. Their other bbq is sort of mediocre but it's worth the trip for the smoked fried chicken.
costco stores sell liquor in maryland?
That's an old chestnut, but it's false. The Shoppers was grandfathered in, but currently no other grocery stores are able to sell alcohol of any type. If the new Olney Safeway has it, I'd be very surprised.
I actually confirmed this with the state liquor board. Wegmans is trying to sublet part of one of their stores to a wine merchant and is getting a lot of pushback; I'm interested to see how that goes.
Real Buffalo Wings Needed
You don't like them very much because the wings around here suck. It's ok, I told you that a few days ago. Take a long weekend to Buffalo and get real wings (my recommendations are Duff's or Hacienda in Niagara Falls). My preference for wings is to get them "dry" - sauced but not sloppy. I accomplish this at home by tossing them in sauce and then sticking them in the oven for a few minutes.
Of course they're still tender; wings are basically all dark meat, and if you fry them right (start the oil at 375; don't let it get below 350 once you drop the wings) then the skin gets crispy fast and the meat is protected.
Real Buffalo Wings Needed
The point is to turn the skin to cracklins on the bone. If you've never had real Buffalo wings and are satisfied with the soggy abominations that they serve around here, then I highly suggest a long weekend to Buffalo to try real wings. It's night and day.
Real Buffalo Wings Needed
I have heard of Jimmy's; do they also make a beef on weck? Herndon is a huge hike for me, but maybe next time I'm out that way, I'll give them a try.
Real Buffalo Wings Needed
If you're a restaurant in Buffalo and you make crappy wings, you don't stay in business long (or you just stop selling wings). Everybody has their favorite wing joint, but I really haven't had downright bad wings in Buffalo.
I don't think it's a matter of getting used to DC wings; they're really just bad here. It's not like BBQ or chili - this is a one true wing. It's fried hard (12 minutes at least; 15 is better) and tossed with a butter/Frank's mix. The only variance is if you like them saucy or drier. Nothing else is negotiable.
Real Buffalo Wings Needed
I'm a Buffalo native, and I have not found them. Eventually I gave up and just started making my own. Its a giant pain in the ass but at least they are excellent.
Nowhere around here fries them long enough.
Inn at Little Washington--making the most of it.
You're leaving me in suspense here man; what was the Tin of Sin???
VA wine country trip this Sunday: winery and lunch suggestions?
I like 8 Chains North and HiddenCroft in Loudon with a stop at Magnolia's at the Mill in Purcellville for lunch.
Gaithersburg?
Cava is a great recommendation but on man does it get crowded and loud. If conversation is the goal, go elsewhere.
Joe's Crab Shack Gaithersburg
Have you ever seen the big restaurants at the Rio empty during peak meal times? I haven't. Who cares about service if you continue to fill seats?
Joe's Crab Shack Gaithersburg
I couldn't decide if it was up or down, so I just went with a half step away!
Joe's Crab Shack Gaithersburg
Has there ever been a good meal served at that place? It's like a half step away from Red Lobster, but without the delicious salty biscuits.
Couple of places coming in next few months Montgomery Cty
Smoke BBQ is opening in Woodmont Triangle in the next few months.
Is that the same Majestic as the one in Alexandrai? Where in Bethesda is it??
Chevy's vs. Uncle Julio's - in Gaithersburg?
I love Guapo's fajitas but overall they're definitely not as good as Uncle Julio's.
Excellent Lunch at Carbon - Peruvian Chicken and Grille
Thank you for the heads up! We are down that way often and I'll give it a shot.
ISO: Best Ramen in DC/VA/MD area?
Has anyone been to Satsuma in Bethesda? I haven't been to Ren's and don't really have anything to compare it to, but I enjoyed their ramen the last time I was there.
Bethesda visit this week - need some quick current rec's
Cava Mezze is really good. Also in the area around the hotel:
Jettie's for salads/sandwiches/soups
Pizzeria de Marco for Neapolitan pizza
Freddy's for fried seafood and the best tap list in Bethesda
Bold Bite for gourmet hotdogs and sausages
Where is liquor cheapest? MD, VA or DC?
Is that really still true with MD's 9% sales tax on alcohol?
Clyde's Tower Oaks Lodge (Rockville) - Review
I've only been once and was sorely disappointed. My fish was dessicated, and when I sent it back it was almost uncooked. I'm fine with rare fish, but this one had a crust of some type on it and by not cooking it, the crust was raw too. The service was brusque and the server did not speak English well. I have not returned and don't intend to. If I want a nice meal in MD, I will go to Bethesda.
Business Dinner Rec in Gaithersburg MD
Burma Road (Burmese but really good and they do have a Chinese menu)
Growlers (If it's a weeknight, the dining room downstairs is pretty quiet)
Tai Shan (Good Chinese and generally pretty quiet)
French Quarter Favorites?
I thought it was fine - but I'm not a big fan of cold cuts in any situation. I didn't get to try one the first time I was in New Orleans, so I figured I should give it a try this time. I don't feel a strong need to go back.
French Quarter Favorites?
We just got back from a long weekend trip and at at the following (mostly based on recommendations from this thread):
Stanley
Cochon (not in the French quarter but only a 20-30 minute walk away)
Bayonna
Green Goddess
Royal Street Deli
Central Grocery
I think all were solid choices and we didn't break the bank at any of them (not by DC price standards, at least). Thanks for the recommendations!
Farm to Table Recommendations
Seconded Patowmack Farm; the food is very good and the setting is beautiful.
Elisir : Water Surcharge -- seriously
It's like the restaurants are taking a page out of the airlines' book!
Ray's Steak and Cheese
I would not bet the ranch that the steak and cheese is a DC "thing". Viola's Subs, in Niagara Falls, has been serving steak and cheese subs (with italian seasoning, tomatoes, onion and lettuce) since the mid-1950s as well.
Ray's Steak and Cheese
Definitely; and the Bethesda store is open again after a 4-month hiatus because someone crashed their car into the building.
BBQ--looking for the best
Branded 72 is the same as O'Briens. The original owners retired and their son-in-law took over and rebranded. The 72 is the year that it opened as O'Briens, so it's actually almost 40.
I disagree totally; I think their chicken is dry and tasteless but their brisket is excellent. It's a Texas style place, after all.
BBQ--looking for the best
I think it might have changed ownership since then. Still haven't gone.
