Mom's 60th Birthday Gathering

I have to give another vote to L'Andana. We had a 60th birthday dinner for my mother there in October and it was great! (and thanks CH for leading us there!)

CORK, IRELAND: Best places to shop for food / eat for a student @ UC CORK!

i'm sure you've been there by now but the english market is great!

As for places to eat, Lennoxs' chipper on Barrack St (Bandon rd?) is awesome! Not very healthy but so good and, IMO, better than hillbillys for greasy food. There is a vegetarian restaurant upstairs from the Quay Coop grocery on the South Mall. The menu changes everyday and the food is pretty cheap too. It has counter service. it sounds a little strange but the centra on washington st also used to have really good hot chicken sandwiches. i haven't been there in a while though. near tesco, brackens makes a solid, basic sandwich too.

60th Birthday Help - Group of 11

I wish we could do something in Boston or Cambridge...it seems so much easier! We have a few people coming from southern NH, a few from Somerville and others from northern suburbs. We are hoping to avoid having everyone come all the way into Boston.

No one in the group drinks so splurging on food is ok. Prices in the $50-75 dollar range would (hopefully) be the highest.

60th Birthday Help - Group of 11

Help Needed! We have a crowd of 11 to celebrate a 60th birthday next Sunday night. We are pretty flexible in terms of type of food -- at this point, we are thinking of the Capital Grille in Burlington because we can't think of anywhere else. It does not have to be fancy but needs to accept a reservation for our group.

Any location north of Boston (Somerville/Medford area up to North Reading area) works for us. I know this is a broad request but we are struggling to come up with a place that is a nicer than a 99 but not overly formal. I'm not from the area so I haven't had much luck so far.

Thank you!

Tea and scones in Cork, Dublin, and Killarney

Queen of Tarts in Dublin (near City Hall) has wonderful tea and plenty of yummy treats and light food.

In Cork, my favorite scones are at the Quay Co-op which is across the foot bridge at the bottom of the Grand Parade. The restaurant is upstairs from the shop...it is quite laid back and funky there (certainly not a tourist's impression of Ireland) but the people are lovely and the scones are addictive. Enjoy your trip!

Dublin in November...a few questions

I don't have a ton to offer on Dublin but I have a few recommendations for Cork.

The Quay Co-Op is a grocery store that has a wonderful cafe upstairs. It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and is a casual, order at the counter type place. it's a little funky looking but don't worry, the food is dynamite! it is just over the river at the Grand Parade. There is also a cafe in the English Market in Cork, upstairs, that is open for breakfast and lunch. i can't recall the name but the food is basic and tasty and the market itself is a unique Cork experience. Both of these places are chill for solo diners and friendly to boot.

I'm not sure if you'll be visiting pubs in Cork but a few to try are:

Mutton Lane - in a small lane of Patrick St (turn near Burger King)
An Spailpin Fanach - across from Beamish factory on S. Main St
Franciscan Well Brew Pub - across river from North Gate Cinema (top of N. Main St)
Tom Barrys - Barrack St (cross river at Beamish and go straight up the hill -- this one has the added benefit of being near Lennox's chipper which has the best fish and chips and burgers in Cork!)
Suas - above Captain America's on Main St near Washington St (modern, sorta trendy)
Costigans, The Washington Inn - mostly student places on Washington St but can be fun if that's the scene you want

Can you tell I love Cork?

In Dublin (and Cork) there are Wagamama noodle restaurants...these are a UK based chain that just started in the US as well. I love the food and it is laid back to eat solo but it is not Irish (and probably not authentically Japanese!) but fun.

There is also a great, veggie cafe neat Grafton St/Stephen's Green called Nude. Very casual spot as well. Good soups and sandwiches.

Good luck finding more places in Dublin. You could try menupages.ie for some ideas too.
