Clever Koi Yummy

Every once in a while we get lucky and hit a dining spot where it all comes together...food, service, atmosphere and value. Such was our experience last night.
We started out with wood grilled octopus with crispy rice cake in an incredibly flavorful hot and sour broth. This was my favorite dish. Smoky octopus, very tender and beautifully presented. Our other starter was the salt and pepper shrimp and scallops. Best rendition of this dish that I have had. My only regret is the portion size was on the small side.
Steam buns were next up. We tried the tempura catfish with pineapple tarter sauce, and the schreiner sausage with daikon slaw and spicy Japanese mustard. Both were very unique and excellent.
For our main course we had a rice dish and noodle dish. The rice dish was a braised brisket (melt in your mouth tender) with vegetables in a chili sauce. The noodle dish was a massam udon noodle dish with duck in an incredibly rich red curry sauce.
The dinner was capped off with a soft serve miso ice cream with a homemade strawberry glaze. We were very full and very satisfied.
We had a cocktail and a beer and our bill was around $70.
The meal we had was very reminiscent of our experience at Momofuku Noodle Bar in New York (David Chang). I enjoyed Clever Koi just as much.

bink's midtown

OUTSTANDING food. Service is a work in progress.

We arrived for dinner last night and were surprised to find the restaurant in what looked to be a renovated house. The ambiance is quite comfortable.

Looking at the menu, and reading Seftel's article, we decided to pursue the appetizers.

The highlight of any meal that I have ever had at a Binkley restaurant is his treatment of soup. We were not disappointed with the Roasted Parsnip soup. If I could have, I would have licked the bowl.

Next came the deep fried baby back rib. The hot honey sauce that this came with was so good that I kept it to dip some bread in.

Contrary to Seftel's advice, I proceeded with the foie gras beignet. I have to admit, the foie gras seemed to be absent, however, my wife, not being a foie gras eater, took a bite and claimed that she loved the beignet with the blood orange marmalade.

Next up was the Crispy Sweetbread Nuggets with the sweet and sour sauce. The sweetbreads were done perfectly, however I found the sauce a bit overpowering. A lighter hand with the sauce would have been great.

The Burratta looked and tasted like it could have been served as a dessert. It was very creamy and nicely complemented by the sweet and sour prunes.

Another winner was the Octopus, perfectly cooked.

We followed this up with the beef and barley risotto which was intensely rich and flavorful. Extraordinary to say the least.

We added the french fries which were perfectly cooked and accompanied by 3 great dipping sauces.

For dessert, we had the butternut squash ice cream pop and the cake donut with butterscotch sauce. The ice cream pop at $4 is a must have.

The quality and presentation of the food more than made up for the many hiccups in the service for the evening. We were very full with our appetizer adventures and quite surprised at how reasonable the final bill was. Once the service issues are ironed out, I think Bink's Midtown has the potential to be one of the top restaurant destinations in town.

that schnitzel place calgary

Let me preface this review by mentioning that I am on a quest to find a Calgary equivalent to the holy grail of sandwiches...the italian veal sandwiches found prevalently in Toronto. These sandwiches are piled high with fresh pan fried breaded veal, with a wonderful tomato sauce and optional hot peppers on a crusty kaiser bun.
Although the schnitzel place does not profess to sell such a feast of flavours, it does offer some interesting alternatives...cudos on their originality.
I ordered the chicken schnitzel dolce vita which consisted of a pan fried chicken schnitzel with carmelized onions and freshly sauteed bell peppers and a tomato sauce on a soft sourdough bun. The result was very good, however not quite the holy grail standard (perhaps only because of my expectation of what the holy grail looked like).
The sandwich was good and filling...the ingredients were all high quality and fresh. Price was considerably higher, $9.75, than the larger, tastier, italian veal sandwiches of which I was comparing ($6.50), but this is Calgary, and the market is used to paying more.
All in all, one of the better sandwiches in town

chowhound worthy eats near sanctuary hotel (132 w 47 st)

We are going to be in New York for our honeymoon, staying at the sanctuary hotel (brand new). We will be going to the theatre, so we need some pre theatre suggestions (under $50 pp food only) preferabally near our hotel. Breakfast spots in our area? We have dinner reservations at Locanda Verde and Wd-50 for our 2 non theatre nights, but we need restaurants for 2 theatre nights. Love most types of food other than indian.

Una Pizza (Calgary)

I just don't get calgarian's high praise of mediocrity at high prices. We went to Una on Friday night (table for 6 so reservation was made). The place was totally happening. We ordered a bottle of wine, least expensive bottle on the muenu of this pizzeria was $35...hmm. Looking at the menu, we ordered some appetizers and main plates(at least what we thought were main plates). The appetizers and salads were ok...the pizza was well done, but very expensive, relative to any other city i have visited in canada or the states. Then came the meatballs, oh my lord, the look on our faces when they arrived...three smallish meatballs on a plate for over $14. I thought the economy was going to wake up resauranteurs to the fact that value must be given for them to survive. I hate going to places where i feel ripped off...hence, even though the place has a lot going for it, i will probably not be back. I guess they took the approach that if Mercato could get away with it, why couldn't they.
