Recipes that use preserved lemons

I once added some PL to homemade hummus and thought it worked very well!

This recipe is also a favorite: http://smittenkitchen.com/2009/01/squ...

Am I missing something? (Choice Market croissant)

Some sources say this is one of the best croissants in the neighborhood, if not farther. But mine was definitively NOT memorable - no crispiness or flakiness and generally tasteless. Was this a fluke, or are there better places to get a fix in FG/CH? I know where to find Balthazar pastries -- wondering specifically about any local greats (a la Trois Pommes Patisserie).

Cornucopia of baked goods at D'Vine Taste (Park Slope)

I can't believe I never knew about the croissants! I love this place, though, and agree about the preserved lemons. Though I've moved a bit further away, I will definitely continue to shop there.

Best Kyoto restaurants

I just returned from a 3-day trip to Kyoto and we ate at Nishiki after reading Chowhound recommendations. The setting is gorgeous (get a 7:30 reservation and arrive a bit early to wander as the sun sets; most shops will be closed but there is a pretty park and bridge over the river). The meal was absolutely wonderful, and great value as everyone says. I recommend Nishiki's house sake, cold, as an accompaniment!

Blue Hill @ Stone Barns

Has anyone made an overnight of it and stayed at an inn or b/b nearby? I'd love some recommendations - - much of what I'm seeing online for the Hudson Valley is over an hour from BHSB, which will seem like a trek after an epic meal!

Cake recovery - help!

I guess I was a bit eager to get to bed last night and covered my cake with aluminum foil before it had fully cooled. This morning it looks a bit wet/soggy; how can I get it back to a more freshly-baked texture? Can I just leave it uncovered during the day and let some of the moisture evaporate??

recipes using brown rice that taste good?

I agree - the brown basmati is great! Last weekend, I made a cold rice salad with steamed zucchini, tomatoes, and tuna fish, dressed with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Simple but yummy.

Make me a muffin -- a Chowhound Challenge

I vouch also (1.5 years later)! They're delicious. I love the texture - denser than a lot of muffins, and the coconut seals the deal.

Dessert in Park Slope

Anyone have a favorite place to meet for just dessert in the neighborhood, other than Chocolate Room or Cocoa Bar? Curious to try something new, if possible.

Chicken Waldorf Recipes?

Yup, I like mine with celery, apples, walnuts, and raisins. Dried cranberries can work well also.

I'm kind of obsessed with this product called Lemonaise (http://www.farawayfoods.com/lemonaise...), which makes everything better (tuna, sandwiches, etc.). They have it at Whole Foods - I buy the plain light kind.

General Greene - review

Haven't seen much on here about the General Greene, so thought I would write some notes from my visit last night (a Sunday). Arrived around 7:45 and there were plenty of tables free - even outside. The meal was lovely overall; waitress very friendly, helped us figure out the right amount of food. The plates are to share and come out as they are ready - pacing was good. We had:
-Dates, wrapped in translucent bacon and served on toothpicks in a puddle of maple syrup. Yum (hard to go wrong there).
-Mac and cheese; came piping hot, and plenty of breadcrumbs. More butter than cheese, was my only complaint. (Not that crispy macaronic dripping in butter is a bad thing - it was just a bit nondescript.)
-Butter lettuce salad with curried almonds and pink grapefruit - very fresh and beautiful, a good complement to the heavier stuff.
-French onion soup, without the usual thick layer of gruyere. Included mushrooms, which was new to me, and had a hint of what tasted like honey to it (?).
-Dirty rice with andouille sausage and chicken liver. This was my favorite thing we ate. A lot of flavors (including something kind of green and earthy - celery? collard greens?).

Total came to about $35 without tip (we didn't have any drinks or dessert - walked over to Blue Marble on Atlantic to complete the meal). A bit expensive - food is not life-altering, just high-quality - but I appreciated the atmosphere and the diverse choices. I'd definitely go back.

What have others thought? The reviews on Yelp are awful...

Can preserved lemons/limes spoil?

Anyone know whether it's ok to store preserved lemons in the fridge without any liquid covering them? I did that, without knowing better... and they're still there. Don't look like they are spoiled, but I'm a bit nervous to find out.

Motorino Pizza on Graham

I was here a few days ago and had a lovely experience overall. Agree with other posters that the toppings ratio is low, but the dough was *seriously* delicious. perfect texture, and only one tiny part was over-charred. we split a simple white pie, among other things, so i can't comment on the tomato sauce. (my slight gripes: the middle was a bit soggy, and i wish there had been ricotta on it. the latter not their problem.)
the highlight was a very, very good octopus appetizer special with ramp pesto and grilled artichokes. so definitely try some non-pizza things.
a disappointment, for those going in the very near future: no BYOB anymore, but they are still awaiting their liquor license to be finalized. so prepare to drink soda, or call ahead to see if it has changed.

Swedish semlor!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone know a good Swedish bakery in the city (Manhattan or Brooklyn, ideally) that would sell semlor? I've heard of Fika on the UWS but wondering if there are others, maybe downtown. Thank you!

Sandwiches in Park Slope?

For something simple, my favorite deli in Park Slope is 5th Avenue Market, on 5th at Berkeley. They have high quality sandwiches (the egg and cheese is awesome), decent prices, and are open 24-hours.

slices of cake from Baked... without traveling there.

I could be wrong about this, but I think the Red Horse Cafe in Park Slope (6th Ave. and 12th st.) sells Baked cupcakes (and maybe cakes). You could call to find out!

My new favorite thing @the Park Slope Food Coop

Word to this! I don't usually like orange-flavored things, and only do ginger in certain situations - but it's incredible. Glad to hear it will be back soon :)
