Club Car in Mamaroneck - Dont Bother Making a Reservation
We went last Friday at 7 and were seated on time. Both the salmon and wasabi encrusted pork chop we ordered were delicious, the salmon perfectly done. The wasabi crust could have been hit with the broiler a bit longer to give it a nice brown crust, but it was still good, as were the side veggies. The salmon had roasted beets with wild rice and the pork had crispy green beans.
Wine is really pricey here, 3x retail, so we each had just a glass.
The room is beautifully restored, great bar, very big scene. The only design flaw are these dumb curtains that make you feel like someone died and it was too depressing to let light in. Too bad, because one side overlooks the park and golden light was streaming through the trees. There should be a way of opening the curtains when it's not too bright outside.
Barnacle BBQ in Mamaroneck?
Sorry, I don't. I am hoping for a fun fish place there. It could use a full makeover inside and out.
Nutrition Action newsletter
A bit late on this post, but I have been subscribing for years. Nutrition Action always has the latest info on vitamins. They feature diet related causes of illness, and have Best Bite ratings on common foods, usually a theme, like best cereals to choose. I have been a subscriber for many years. It's short enough not to be overwhelming, but full of pertinent articles.
CSPI is also a leader in food safety. They broke the alar chemicals on apples story years ago, leading to a ban, and were in part responsible for the nutrition labels we have on all our products now. Please support them!
Piri-Q in Mamaroneck
Finally got a chance to eat at this South American place. It's an above-average neighborhood place.
Instead of a plain bread loaf we were served grilled French bread loaded with garlic. Yum. For apps, we shared the bolinhos- Portuguese cod fish cakes. There were about 8 golf ball sized potato/cod cakes- a crunch fried crust outside and creamy potoato/cod inside with a piri-piri hot red sauce mixed with mayo. Quite good. The shrimp and chourico were okay. Chourico was a bit salty, but who doesn't love sausage? I preferred the larger grilled shrimp to the smaller shrimp in the app. For our main course, we ordered the Prato, a mixed grill with ribs, roast chicken, grilled shrimp and chourico. The meat was cooked perfectly, ribs smoky and shrimp flame charred but not rubbery. We also had a Medi (Mediterranean) salad. Greens were fresh and I enjoyed the lemon-honey-oregano dressing. Nice change from boring vinaigrette.
True, the Mediterranean dishes don't jibe with the Brazilian/Portuguese vibe but that doesn't bother me. I would definitely eat here again, but be sure to byob. There is a fantastic, fairly new wine store just up the street- La Cave. A hearty Zinfandel would go nicely with this fare.
Barnacle BBQ in Mamaroneck?
I think all the negative reviewers before March of 2010 should give The Barnacle another try. Coleman, the owner, realized that he needed to revamp the staff and menu. It is now a BBQ and fish shack. And it's delicious. Crunchy fried clams that when bitten into, yield to a creamy soft center. The steamers come in a rich broth, the clams cooked beautifully, not rubbery. The dry rub ribs are full of flavor and the other BBQ we saw delivered to the other patrons looked awesome.
Our particular fav is the Thurs. night luau. All you can eat whole roasted pork ( don't look at the head, complete with apple in mouth) and seafood paella. Both very good the 3 times we tried it. The salads are pretty decent too (mixed mesclun), for a BBQ place, which is unusual.
There's a reggae band that night. You can sit at the bar or front porch and pretend you're in Jamaica (you'll have to have a great imagination).
The deck in the back is one of the few places in the Larchmont/ Mamaroneck area that you can dine looking at the water. It's a little industrial, next to Director's boat yard, but that just adds to the fish shack ambience.

Roasted Peppers - Mamaroneck
We were there the night the food critic was. The place was packed and we both sat at the bar. This was our second visit and it didn't disappoint. The food was great, as before. Now the NY Times has validated it too!
Roasted Peppers - Mamaroneck
I ate there last week and it was way beyond my initial low expectations. See my full review here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/684452#5364265
Great Pan American in Mamaroneck, Westchester NY
Roasted Peppers, a new restaurant in Mamaroneck Village bills itself as "Casual American Dining". What that name doesn't tell you is that the talented chefs recreate typical American fare, and we're talking the whole of America– including Latin and South America– with surprising flair.
Just six weeks new, Brothers Juan and Roberto Lepe had been executive chefs in New York for over 20 years. According to their website their roots are in Jalisco, Mexico. This is their first restaurant on their own, along with general manager, Ruben Ochos. If our experience is any indication, the restaurant will be a huge success.
Our meal started with guacamole, prepared to order at the table and served with tortilla chips and curlicues of thin plantain strips, perfectly crispy. We ordered the turkey burger with sun dried tomato pesto and pepper jack cheese. It came with sweet potato fries, lightly dredged in flour, creating a crunchy coat that yielded to the creamy potato interior. Day boat scallops from Nantucket, pan seared in a tart cherry balsamic glaze. This was served with roasted onion risotto dotted with sweet little squares of butternut squash. And last, the day's special, a risotto with perfectly cooked shellfish and chorizo. The rice was infused with a delicious sofrito, very flavorful.
When we first walked in, I thought this may be a chain restaurant, it had that look. But the space is saved by a large brick wall and some colorful vases, which brought to mind an upper West side neighborhood place. While the decor looks like it was done on the cheap, the talent, skill and experience of the chefs is evident in every dish. Next time I'm going to try the upscale take on Mac and Cheese: butter-poached lobster meat with orecchiette pasta, shiitake mushrooms, truffle cream and cheddar gratin. Diet be damned!

Good Latin in Port Chester?
Our newest fav in Port Chester is Aquaria. Really great cerviche and unusual Peruvian drinks. Patria has become a little uneven.
Best smokehouse in the tristate area.
LaMaree (also known as Portier Fine Foods) makes the best whitefish salad, probably in the country. They also have other great smoked fish. They can even smoke a turkey if you bring it, although they smoke their own meats as well. Their main business is supplying smoked goods and caviar to stores and chefs, but their smokehouse welcomes retail business. It's in Mamaroneck, Westchester NY.
My friend in Texas came for a visit and we served the smoked salmon and whitefish. 2 months later he was still dreaming about it and ordered it online. I dare you to find better. If you do, I want to hear about it. http://www.lamareesmokehouse.com/

Good Latin in Port Chester?
We love trying out new restaurants in Port Chester, NY. Our favorite so far is Patria. Best Sangria in Westchester and inventive tapas served in a giant, multi-dish bowl.
Q comes in second for overpriced BBQ, but we still love the funky ambience and great bbq.
Great iced tea in a mason jar, which you can take home with you.
The Paleteria has really unusual flavors of ice pops, like prune and nances (tropical fruit with large black seeds). Real, pureed frozen fruit or ice milk.
We've tried some of the smaller Guatemalan places but nothing has piqued our interest for a 2nd visit. Any suggestions?
