Dim Sum at Dragon Dynasty - Could be some of GTA's best!

Plan to go on holiday Monday at 11 am, but my dad hates waiting for tables. What's a second choice in the area if it is a long wait?

ISO HOME made Shrimp Chips

For chips to cook at home I'm not sure it would be in the snack aisle. I think I've seen them in some supermarkets near the grains/dry goods aisle.

Mother's Day BRUNCH (list of places)

I'd say that the concept is good but the execution is not great. Of the starters, the chowder was too thin and the mushroom soup too thick. The "bean with tuna" turned out to be seared tuna steak but rather tasteless. The shrimp salad, my favourite, had an Asian flair lend by sesame oil. There was also regular brunch items like scrambled eggs and bacon which I ignored. The "mains" were almost tapas sized and they encouraged you to order as much as you want. However the "lemongrass skewered cornish hen" had little flavour of said herb, the lamb loin was overcooked, the quiche more like a fritatta also overdone.

The macarons (thankfully not macaroons as specified in the menu) were for me the best part. They were pretty nice considering it was AYCE - light chewy texture, good flavours except the raspberry because they used jam as the filling which completed overpowered the cookie. They were bite sized, I only had nine...

Service was good and setting comfortable but won't be back next year!

Bridget, the roti lady is back!

Had my first shrimp roti this year. Apparently she's been back for 3 weeks, but only when the weather was good enough. I was the only customer at 12:30 pm.

It seems more yummy than I remembered, but a little smaller and at $8 now.

Mother's Day BRUNCH (list of places)

Taking mom to Senses. the main entree is brought to the table, the rest is buffet.

Now I didn't know they will serve macarons. think I'll skip the entree :-)

Where is the best Korean BBQ restaurant?

I think all the all-you-can-eat ones are run by Chinese.

Didn't know Seor Ak San does BBQ, I like that place, will try it some day.

Bibimbap in the PATH?

Acko used to be called Ho Shim and in fact still shares the same kitchen as the Ho shim takeout counter up front. You can get the mix veg with meat on rice to go there.
This is I think the only completely Korean fast-food along the path. The one at 121 King serves a mix of Korean, Japanese and Chinese items.

ISO The Best Chinese Rice in TO

"Glutinous rice" is a different animal. It's translucent when done, and not used as you would plain white rice. Most short grain rice (preferred in Japanese cuisine) are a bit sticky, unlike long grain (used in in Chinese, Thai and Indian cooking); is that what you mean?

Also which "better restaurants" are you referring to?

yummy yummy dumpling - my preferred spot downtown

Went today and the menu is a one pager and is not like the website. No XLB, onion pancake, pan fried buns etc.

The fried chicken dumplings are interesting, the ends are not pinched together but the wrapper is crispy yet the filling is moist. Unfortunately the mutton dumplings are strangely spiced and a bit gamey, my Caucasian friend could not eat them and my mom didn't like them either. The skin of this dumpling as well as the beef pancake has glutinous rice in it which makes for a chewy and moist texture which we do like. (It's translucent and not at all like those pictured in PSS's blog though.)

Does anyone know where I can get authentic British style Crispy Duck Pancakes in Toronto?

I've been told that the deep frying, at least as a finish, is a Hong Kong invention that has caught on everywhere, even in China.

Does anyone know where I can get authentic British style Crispy Duck Pancakes in Toronto?

Have you had Peking duck here and if so how is it different from this British dish?

Chinese foodcourt stalls (authentic cantonese)

Asian Legend serves Northern Chinese food, not Cantonese (Sourthern Chinese). (But the servers we encounter at the Dundas location do speak Cantonese.)

100 Foods to Eat Before You Die - Toronto/GTA Edition

Bird's nest is not a gastronomical delight. It is supposed to be "good for you" - increase your metabolism, purify your skin etc.

Diana's Seafood opening restaurant

I think it was listed on the separate "specials" menu which had pasta of the day etc.

Banh Mi Boys

OK had the duck, a good portion of meat, however too salty for me and on the dry side. As for the squid taco, was disappointed by only about 4 squid rings in it but the squid taste comes through.

The one thing I really don't like is the lack of ventilation. It's so smoky in there. Hopefully in the summer they'll open the door.

dim sum in downtown toronto?

Rol San is still top of the class. Sky Dragon and Noble has fallen off our list. And as I mentioned Dim Sum King and Garden View are OK. Ivan's Kitchen noted below was also good during the one visit we had.

dim sum in downtown toronto?

Wow it has been a year since we were at Dim Sum King last. Today (Good Friday) it was packed. What we had was good - taro puff was tasty and the pork pieces were not hard little nuggets like some places, congee had good texture and taste, cheung fun with pea shoots was chock-full of tender greens etc. Unfortunately there were next to no steamed dumpings passing by us until we were full, therefore didn't get to sample their har gow etc.

Went to Forest View last month as well, glad to see they are still OK and not too busy.

Rijstafel / rijsttafel / rijstaffel dinner at Quince

Ok still haven't been so don't quite understand how the "rounds" work. Do they come around with a platter of food and give you a serving on your plate? originally I thought maybe they brought out individual servings on fresh plates but this post proves me wrong.

Diana's Seafood opening restaurant

Hmm, it appears their menu changes a bit - today the seafood platter had black cod on the printed menu, instead of salmon. And they said fish and chips are served up to 5pm only (or maybe they don't want my dad, a senior, to have "kids fish and chips"). But all the seafood is expertly cooked, that's for sure.

Banh Mi Boys

Duck Confit banh mi? I'll be there...

Lemon mousse without eggs

When a student I would make "mousse" by whipping evaporated milk and adding it to flavoured jello. You can do it with gelatin and natural flavours, don't know if that would be ok.

Looking for duck confit

Bruno's Fine Foods, e.g. at Yonge and St. Clair.

Where's the best fried chicken in the GTA ?

Any Korean fried chicken worth mentioning?

Bavarian roasted Pork Hocks

Where can we find good Schweinshaxe in Toronto? thanks

Chinese salt and pepper dishes: sichuan peppercorns??

You can buy "spiced salt" at Chinese groceries which has some ground Sichuan peppercorns already mixed in. Don't know if this is allowed or just slipped in under the radar.

ISO bulk citric acid powder? Toronto?

Went to Bulk Barn at College but they only have it in bottles. Cashier said they used to have it in bulk.

Chinese Red Tea?

What is called "red tea" in Chinese is black tea. There are many grades and blends so it's hard to recommend a brand that is close to what you've had. Liptons is popular in Hong Kong as well as "Ceylon" black tea.

yummy yummy dumpling - my preferred spot downtown

Well "bao" means bun. Because they are round, they are not considered "dumplings" in the Chinese sense, which usually are in a half-moon shape and have pointy corners.

yummy yummy dumpling - my preferred spot downtown

She said "it's predecessor of the same location, mother's dumplings," :-)
Definitely going to check it out!

Macaron Day Toronto: Free Macarons at Participating Patisseries on March 20

Only Petite Thuet is near my office. Too bad Brick Street is not a participant, their macarons are not bad.
