Best menu items at Pico's Mex Mex

I like the Chilis en Nogada. An unusual dish only available in two other places in town. It is an interesting combo of shredded seasoned pork roasted in a poblano pepper with a walnut cream sauce and topped with pomegranite seeds. I believe the story is that colors represent the Mexican flag.

Oysters Rockefeller in Houston

I was at Gilhooleys on Sunday and had the Gilhooleys Oysters. Great! Grilled with parmesian cheese and butter. $5.95 for a half dozen and $10.95 for a full. They were very crowded so service was slow. There was also a band playing on the patio.

Thelma's moved this spring after the fire at the place on Live Oak. She is now at Scott and Southmore. Same food, staff, and unique "atmosphere".

Vegetarian suggestions for Houston?

Hi norton,
I can't speak for the Woodlands, but when I entered that locale and vegetarian in this site http://www.b4-u-eat.com/ I only found 2 entries, Other Demassis other locations are good. Also closer to metro Houston, 3 miles maybe, is Pepper Tree, casual but good.

Comparing Greek Restaurants in Houston

The place near the port was Athens Bar & Grill-always good for interesting memories ;) including the dancers which alternated nightly between belly dancers and the guys doing the traditional Greek dances with ozo and retsina(sp?).

Comparing Greek Restaurants in Houston

Dani,
You might also try the Roadster Grill at the Bellaire triangle. The personable Greek owner, Nic, is right there cooking his grandmothers recipies and taking an active role in the operations. My favorite is the Moucassa(sp?) and his greek salad-both are fresh , flavorful, and home made. Others have said the burgers are good, but I haven't tried them. An odd item on the menue is a butterscotch malt, but it is tasty as well. As far as ambiance, the building is a former Taco Bell including drive thru, all painted Greek blue.
cheers!

Houston: kids friendly AND good

Hi muemue-
Welcome to Houston! a fabulous eating town.
You might try this link http://www.b4-u-eat.com/ and use the tab on the left for kid-friendly. You can also search by locale or zip code and get reviews by regular folk.
The first place that comes to mind is Lupe Tortillas on the SW Fwy at Kirby, as they even have an outdoor sand play area for kids. http://www.lupetortillas.com/ Others will post too, and let us know if you have any other criteria.
Cheers

Good Breakfast Place in Houston????

The last few times I've been by Daily Grind, they appear to be closed.

Good Breakfast Place in Houston????

For truely "hole in the wall" try Frank's Grill on Telephone. It is frequented by a get-your-hands dirty crowd that can be fussy about a real breakfast. The food is heavy and greasy but filling, but I must admit I'm not a big breakfast fan. On a little better note, you might also look at Lankford Grocery in midtown. They don't have a web link, but look at the photos on this ..http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Writeup.aspx?ReviewID=2689&RefID=2513

BBQ in Houston

Goode Company on Kirby has a sister restaurant across the street called Armadillo Palace. http://www.goodecompany.com/goodeRestaurantArmadilloPalace.aspx
A few of your crowd might want to go there for it's Texas-y atmosphere, dessert, and air conditioning. They only have 1 or 2 BBQ items on their menue tho but I have seen them set up a steam table, etc. for a group.

Breakfast Tacos in Houston

Yes definately, Noemis. They do close around 3pm tho.

[Houston] Looking for Halal Restaurants

I've eaten at Saffron and the food is good, I like the stews, daily items, bread baked on site and the complementary barley soup is especially excellent. They serve the traditional skewers, which are fresh, and Persian rosewater ice cream. Prices are very reasonable with most meals under $10. the menu link http://www.saffronpersiancafe.com/Menu4.htm Personally I don't find them very European even if the ticker tape says so.

The middle Easterners I have spoken with there, like it better than some of the older places. Quite a pleasant atmosphere, although it's not very large and the the tables are close together. It's order at the counter then they bring you your food at the table. The staff is pleasant and attentive and do not discourage lingering after the meal. Near the order counter is a big screen tv tuned to a Persian channel with Persian music playing over it. It is visable but not obtrusive. The restrooms are outfitted to accomodate middle Eastern hygine habits, so they should know their audience.

Bijan Grill diagonally across the street would be a competitor, but as of late they seem to be slipping. The doog(sp) is the best in town, in my opinion. Their food is just average now, and the place is not near as clean as it was. Their decor is nice and the place more expansive in size and prices are comprable. Like Saffron Grill they are counter order then bring it to your table. They are less attentive after you are served. They do have hookahs available. The restroons are traditional unmodified Western style.

Hope this helps..

Good Cheap Food in Houston and Austin

Hi BetsyBird-

Rice University-great choice! Houston is a wonderful diverse multicultural town with dining expericences to match. The locals use this website for guidance...
http://www.b4-u-eat.com/ along with Rice's zip 77005 should give you about 100 entires.
Some of my favorites are...
Istanbul Grill-fresh, aromatic, flavorful, and economical but poor parking
Two Rows Restaurant & Brewery-get the fresh brewed root beer
Thai Spice-good deal for a lunch buffet if you like Thai food

Rice University is bordered by these streets, Main on the East, University on the South, Rice on the North, and Greenbriar on the West. In the next three blocks or so West, to KIrby Drive is an area called the "Village" and it is where you will find many of the listings. Streets in there are, Rice, University, Morningside, Kelvin, Times, Bolsover, Dunstan, Amhurst. All should be walkable distance.

If alcohol is not offensive, on Morningside is the Gingerman(G-man)
http://houston.gingermanpub.com/ and someone on campus will inform you of Valhalla.
Enjoy, and don't give too much thought to "the freshman 15".

Ethiopian in Houston?

Sorry, not familar with it. Isn't unfamilarity a reason to try something(wink). If you do , let us know what you find.

Marzipan Pig in Houston

Just returned from World Market in the Galleria area. They had the marzipan where you could make the pig, and lots of formed fruits etc. They also had some pig shaped chocolate covered with foil(printed to resemple a pig). Perhaps a small local candy maker like Kleggs candies could make you one.

Ethiopian in Houston?

In my opinion, Addisaba Ethiopian Restaurant is the best. It was suggested to my by the gent at Maru, which is a grocery that carries some ready to eat products like injera. The folks at Addisaba are very congenial, the prices low, and the food excellent. It all comes served on a "loaf" of injera, with three more folded loaves to finish the meal. The bread is like like a big tangy crepe. It is made of teff, the most nutrient rich grain. Tear off a 2x2 inch or so chunk, pinch up some food and into your mouth. They will bring flatware if requested. Take an adventuresome friend or two and order a meat and a veggie sampler plate. They have quite a few veggies that are cooked, and a green salad that is crunchy. Some of my favorites are the lentils and the carrot/potato dish. The meats are mostly wots(stews) and a few are tartar. The spice barbar is quite hot, so be wary if this will cause issues for you. The strip center is ho-hum and the regulars seem to come in late in the evening.

Second choice is Blue Nile, good food too, but not as varied in the flavors as Addisaba. As to Nazarath, the only time I stopped in there the woman seated me and responded that she didn't know what they had to serve, but whenever to woman who did the cooking might show up, I could order some food. I went by DesDes 3 times when they should have been open, but weren't, so no food rating there.

My first introduction to Ethopian was Queen of Sheba, a homey little place in the Bellaire/Renwick area that was "gentrified" away.

Check the Press for Addisaba coupons and enjoy.
