King Hua for Dim Sum: The new Sea Harbour
I was very excited to go check this place out after these glowing reviews and the fact that it is very close to my house that we recently moved to. Yesterday, I took my parents and my almost 2 year old son right at 10 a.m. so we didn't have to wait.
One thing right off the bat-MSG!!! OMG! Way too much! We couldn't finish half of everything we ordered and for a Chinese family to not finish a meal for whatever reason, this is huge. My mom tasted it in the congee right away and I felt the MSG effect for the rest of the day.
I wanted to like this place so much, but IMHO, it's not that great...actually it's not good at all. This family will be sticking with The Kitchen for dim sum.
Looking for a Carneceria in Alhambra
Recently moved to Alhambra and looking for a good carneceria. Want to fire up the grill tonight.

Visiting Portland Next Week
Hi All, Wife and I will be visiting Portland with our 9 month old and need recs for good food near the places that we will be checking out and near our hotel.
There's lots of recs that I've found on CH and EXTRAMSG's post on portlandfood.org but don't know where they are in relation to places we'll be going so I hope you can help.
Places we're hoping to get to-
Chinatown
End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center
Oregon Historical Society
Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI)
Oregon Zoo
Pittock Mansion
Portland Art Museum (PAM)
Portland Children's Museum
Portland Classical Chinese Garden
Portland Japanese Garden
And we're staying at the Marriott Portland Downtown Waterfront
And we'll be using public transit the whole time.
We're open to all types of food
Extra points if you can point us to good food near great thrift stores!
TIA
Larkin's finally open!
Open a can of worms when you open a restaurant at a site where it wasn't a restaurant before. In this case, it was a used car lot. Different uses, different requirements.
Hop Woo, Chinatown
One of my favorite places in C-town. I usually get the dumpling and noodle soup. They always put a big ladle in the bowl like I'm going to share it with somebody or something!
Haven't been there for dinner.
Elite for Dinner?
Read the rave reviews for Dim Sum at Elite, but haven't seen a review about dinner there. Anybody been there for dinner?
B-Man's
I was just there last night for the usual comfy food dinner-curry chicken plate with mac and potato salad. It's usually good for two meals cuz it's really big.
I'll have to try the ABC burger soon!
McGrath Fish House - good/bad/indifferent?
Skip it. We only went there because it was right there at the Santa Anita Mall and we were really hungry and didn't want the typical mall food. They're in the category of places like Macaroni Grill/Outback Steakhouse.
For other seafood options, we like Cameron's Seafood in Pasadena, nothing fancy. We get takeout from Gerlach's all the time.
best budget/bulk sparlking mineral water options
We also got this over the weekend and LOVE it! We drink about as much as you do and we've tried getting it from Costco, the San Pellegrino is about $1/liter and the Crystal Geyser bottles at TJs is about $1 for 1.5 liters. In our effort to reduce waste, I saw an article about a home carbonator and thankfully someone had a new unused one, the Penguin model, on Craigslist! I would recommend this for anyone who drinks more than 1 liter a day. Also get the Penguin model and you can use the glass bottles which we have found in the short time that we've had it to be better tasting than the sparkling water that came in plastic bottles.
Also this carbonator allows you to make the water as bubbly as you want which is pretty cool.
And the final thing that pushed me over the edge in getting this was that it was not Made in China! Might be another topic but I'm trying my best not to buy things MIC given all the negative stuff that's been brought to light.
No More Chow Fun In Chinatown
It'll do better than Chow Fun. The guy from Fire Grill has been running the restaurant for at least a couple of years and I'm glad he's now going to do what he does best-Hawaiian chicken. He's got crews at most farmer's markets and it's good stuff.
Chow Fun was doomed from the very beginning. They had a high concept for the resto-remember the restaurant fight scene from Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon? Well they were going to have "shows" like that at Chow Fun, but it never got off the ground. Should have focused more on the food.
cheapest grass fed beef?
Yup. Got the TJ's Grass fed Angus beef patties last night for dinner. It was great! Had it with the TJ focacia (sp) buns, grilled onions, avocado, swiss cheese, etc. It's $6.99/lb. There were 4 patties and total was about 1.35 lbs.
No one can escape Starbuck's...
There's still one in a Well Fargo in S. Pas, about 1/2 mile south of another one and a newer one opened about 6 montha ago about 3/4 mile away. Careful driving around S. Pas...the soccer moms in their volvos are juiced up!
my favorite fries in pasadena
I'll second that! I was there last night and I almost got a side order of fries with our meal but I decided to be good (trying to watch the carbs). But every other time I'm there, I'll get the fish and chips. Of course, gotta eat some fries on the drive home, but a little dangerous since they're hot out of the fryer, but I can't resist.
Potato Taco In Highland Park, so good! "My Taco"
Yes, I do love them too! I usually don't get potato tacos because I like some meat in my meal, but those potato tacos ROCK! And their guacamole salsa is awesome. I usually try to pick up dinner there at least once a week. Their sopes are darn good too. Don't venture too far away from the tacos and sopes though-I've had the beef soup and another beef dish and they were extremely salty.
Their service is a bit spotty when they get slammed.
I want to go CHERRY PICKING!
Looks like you're going to have to wait another month and a half. Check out http://cherriesupic.com/. We've gone to Hobart's and Northside. I prefer Northside, they have huge trees that you have to climb on a ladder to get to the gems and it's lots of fun.
750ml in South Pasadena?
Not yet. Very close. I walk by it everyday to and from the Gold Line station and they're about 99% there. They even had their hours posted on the door yesterday morning- 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. I think. I'll post if I get more info when I go by after work today.
Anyone familiar with the Breakfast Shack in South Pasadena?
It's not worth a road trip. It's better than Denny's but nowhere in the neighborhood of Julienne which is about a mile away. Julienne is worth a road trip for.
Catering Services for Nonprofit in Lincoln Heights
You might want to give LA Baking Company a call. They're right there in Lincoln Hts on N. Broadway and the 5 freeway. I've been to several catered events that they did and it was really good. And everything in their bakery is yummy!
Dino's Burgers
Yes you can. They also have Dino Jr's on N. Broadway, just west of Griffin Ave about 1 mile north of the Main st. location. The "chain" is named after the owner's son who used to work there when I was working in the neighborhood. Good people, very active in the community. They also help out at the Greek Festival at St. Sophias.
Got Red Lobster gift card...now what?
My In-laws got us RL gift cards for Christmas and I need to know if there is anything good there besides the cheddar biscuits. Are the grilled items any good or should we re-gift or try to trade it?
Downtown LA - Need Lunch Recs for New Office Location. Lists encouraged!
Yes it is and still very yummy. It's just south of Hope St on 7th.
Craving for fish sandwich in L.A.?
I would recommend Gerlach's Grill in Pasadena. Strictly takeout.
Cooking/Restaurant Supply stores in Monterey Park-Alhambra-Rosemead-SG?
That's the one!
Cooking/Restaurant Supply stores in Monterey Park-Alhambra-Rosemead-SG?
There's a restaurant supply store where the Levitz used to be across the street from the mall where NBC is on Garfield.
Eating Well magazine
I enjoy Eating Well very much. I read it more for its articles than for the recipes.
Anyone try this combo at THE HAT?
#7 at Eastside Market. I don't get anything else there. Though they don't put horseradish on it. It's quite a sandwich, though I have to go vegetarian for a couple of meals after that to get the cholesterol back to a good level!
Want to use a slow cooker to make congee/jook, any advice?
I'm feeling a little under the weather and want to make a big batch of jook cuz it's just the perfect comfort food. I just got a slow cooker and was wondering if any Hound has used a slow cooker to make jook? Details would be appreciated!
