SF food person in Manhattan for Saturday and Sunday nights. Where to eat (moderately priced)??
Hello! I'm from San Francisco and have worked at two great restaurants here (Frances and Mission Street Food), and also at our fabulous farmer's market at the Ferry Plaza. I love good food! I'm going to be in NYC for just two nights. Do you have recommendations for wonderful things that are moderately priced (and that I can get into)? I like everything and am up for everything. Lunch and dinner suggestions would be VERY appreciated! I don't go to NYC that often, so I am not that up on what is fun, good, and happening.
Thanks!!
Diners, Drive-ins, Dives, and Disgusting
And when Rachel Ray says EVOO or sammies, I want to punch her in the face. :)
Graduation Diner Near Union Square
Thanks! I know it's not all food-snooty fancy-schmancy (and I like food-snooty fancy-schmancy), but for an occasion like a graduation with people in town, it's just right! :)

We've gone to Lulu's, which is South of Market (SOMA) and not that far away, for events like that. It's a crowd-pleaser!
looking for the perfect representation of California cuisine for one night in SF
Frances - If you can't find reservations on opentable (difficult) call from 2-5pm (not Monday) and talk to the reservationist. Explain your situation and maybe she can either squeeze you in or put you on the waitlist for a cancellation. Otherwise, the bar is a great option. Go either at 5:30 when it opens, 6:45 for the first turn at the bar, or 8pm for the 2nd. You might have to wait for bar seats, but it's totally worth it!
Personally, I like Bar Agricole's cocktails, but I think the menu is overpriced. At least that's how I felt the last time I went. I haven't been to Canteen, but I've herad good things.
Have you looked into either State Bird Provisions (very unique) or Local Kitchen Eatery? I was very impressed with Local Kitchen, and I'm from SF and grew up eating here...
Are these places I should check out for 3 nights in Philly - Other thoughts??
Hi - I am on business in Philly for a few days by myself. I'll be working during the day, but I can do what I please at night. I am from San Francisco, love really good food and drink, and have no problem going and sitting at a restaurant bar by myself and having dinner. Here is what my friend form Philly (who now lives in SF) suggested:
Zahav
Standard Tap
Village Whiskey
Amada
Talulas garden
I am staying in Rittenhouse square area (my friend didn't know that when he gave me recs).
Do you have suggestions or confirmations of his suggestions? I am a 32 yr old single woman, and I don't mind going out alone, but I'm not looking to get hit on or a collgeg bar scene! :)
ile sur la Sorgue France (near Avignon)
Thanks for the tips!! Can't wait to experience the area and check out your recommendations!!
ile sur la Sorgue France (near Avignon)
Hi - does anyone know this area? Looking for interesting restaurants for a group and activities. Anything unusual. Anyone know of wineries or farmhouses that make lunch or dinner for groups?
I know these are random questions, but I am going to be there in May with family and we don't know the area that well.
Thanks!
Padron Peppers
Yes, for sure, the shishito are sooo good! Less spicy I think. And ask at whole foods if they'll bring them in for you. I seem to recall that they special order things for people!
Padron Peppers
I just ate them at Julian Serrano Last night. They were ok. Could have been cooked a little longer. Maybe there's a local farm doing them. Otherwise maybe happy quail farm in the bay area could ship then to you! Good luck!
Clark Lewis is closed! Where to eat in P-town that is hip and really good on Sunday night???
Am in town tonight for a fashion trade show and we wanted to go to Clark Lewis but it's closed Sunday!!
I'm from San Francisco, like the local thing, and am going out with a group of girls from 30 - 45. We are all in fashion, are really nice people, and love food and wine. Any suggestions?? Price isn't too much of an issue but please - no French Laundries!!
Thanks!!!
Any info on "Bistro Saint Germain" in Lower Haight?
I've been to P'tit Laurent and although the service SUCKED the food was very good and I liked the atmosphere. I used to live in Paris and SF is dearly lacking good french bistros. Hopefully this will be a winner!
Blue Bottle permanent space open -- reports?
If you knew how much they are paying for the space at the FB you would change your tune. A business has to do at least $2000 per square foot there to make it worth it which is HUGE. Rents at the FB have skyrocketed recently, because of the greedy asshole leasing company, driving out the smaller businesses - Mistral for example. I would prefer that BB come in and charge a little more there than another Peets or some larger chain store. At this point pretty much only chain stores can afford to be in the FB. So in that case I think BB can be forgiven doing what it can!! Love you BB!!
Blue Bottle permanent space open -- reports?
I also disagree. I prefer Blue Bottle over all the other choices, not only for the coffee itself but for the attutitude of the place. 4 Barrel is pretty mellow but the hipster too cool for schoolness at ritual makes me what to heave.
favorite place for corn tortillas in sf?
You can only buy their tortillas at the market on Saturday. The rest of their dried goods are available through their website and other stores.
favorite place for corn tortillas in sf?
Truly fab corn tortillas can be found at Rancho Gordo's stall at the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market on Saturdays. FYI, get there before 11:30 as they sell out by then. This is the only place that Rancho Gordo sells their tortillas, once a week, so the trip is worth it. If they are sold out go to the back of the market, I think Primavera also sells their tortillas, they aren't as good, but will do in a pinch..
L'Osteria del Forno (North Beach)
I love this place. Good regional food, no pretension, and, lots of cheese on things!! I need to go back, thanks for the reminder!
Dinner prior to Giants Game
I don't know what your budget is but I like the Acme Chop House. They are dedicated to the healthy and local thing and also serve classic americana that kids eat - mac and cheese, burgers, pasta, steak, etc. It is sophisticated enough that you will enjoy it too! It also is right next to the park and therefore very easy!
Chinese Restaurant in Marin
I like the place, also in Sausalito, called Tommy's Wok. It has been around for a long time and I have never been disappointed.
B'Day dinner - SPQR, NOPA, or Delfina???
Bummer, Delfina is all booked up! Maybe Coco500???
Pimientos de padrone
For the Portugese food, it isn't that fancy, but I love the Grubsteak in the Tenderloin. One side of their menu is regular diner food and the other is Portugese food. Their cod fish hash is excellent!
Pimientos de padrone
There is a tapas resto in Palo Alto that serves them. I don't remember the name (maybe someone else knows it) but it is on the main strip, has a kind of an industrial feel, and really high ceilings. The place is good and the peppers are fantastic!!! I could have had 10 servings!
advice on farmers' market in SF/Oakland
Oh no, I would definitely keep your Slanted Door reservation if you have one. Do not miss eating at one of the most wonderful restaurants in SF and the world. You will not regret it!
advice on farmers' market in SF/Oakland
If you want the ultimate Farmer's Market experience, something that will excite all your senses and make you wish with all your heart that you were in SF every Saturday, then go to the Ferry Plaza. It is also very easy to access on public transport. If you want something more run of the mill that is still nice but less fancy and sparkly then go to the Alemany Market. You can't go wrong with either but for a tourist (sorry to use that word!) the Ferry Plaza is a much more interesting experience (I am a local from SF and it is my fave, I go every week).
Slanted Door vs. Ana Mandara?
If you are going for the food, hands down, the Slanted Door. the food is so much better than Ana Mandara. It can be romantic if you get a table along the windows that face out to the Bay. Make sure that you request that when you make the reservation and then get there a little early to be sure that you get your table.
B'Day dinner - SPQR, NOPA, or Delfina???
My d'day is on Monday the 26th and I can't decide between SQPR, NOPA, and Delfina. I have never been to SPQR or NOPA, they both serve Rancho Gordo Beans, and I work for Rancho Gordo on the weekend at the Farmer's market so it would be fun to sample our product. I have been to Delfina but it was a long time ago and I know that I love it. Advice? Suggestions??? Where should I go, I can't decide!!! I have heard that NOPA can be hit or miss and I don't want a miss!
Good Italian Food
I love l'Osteria del Forno on Columbus. It is really small so be prepared to either wait for a table or just be in a small space. I love the food there and I have probably spent 6 months in Italy off and on and I find this place to be very authentic.
Yummy Thai in Sacramento near Old Town
We are having a graduation dinner for my sister in Sacramento Saturday night and need a good place for 7 to go for Thai. We are from San Francisco and are used to good Thai food and hope that someone can recommend something good in Sacramento. Hopefully at a reasonable price!!! Thanks!!!
