Cup cake's Profile

Joanne Kates is leaving the Globe!

I loved her reviews! They were entertaining and insightful. I always take reviews with a grain of salt and check other sources before choosing a restaurant, but it really seemed like she gave the straight goods and her writing was highly entertaining. There seems to be less and less of the columnists at the G&M that I enjoy. I think the G&M and I are going to have to break up unless the next reviewer can charm me.

Toronto bakeries with swiss meringue type frosting on cakes and cupcakes- please help

I generally make my own cupcakes. The only ones I've liked from a bakery were from Prairie Girl. The chocolate ones with strawberry icing...mmmmm! I've only had the mini version.

Where to find glucose in TO

I bought ingredients for the Milk Bar cookbook from Golda's Kitchen online. They are located in Mississauga. They ship very quickly or I believe you can pick it up. I also bought cake collars, cake ring and quarter sheet pan. Baking from that cookbook requires some investment in equipment/ingredients! I found frozen passionfruit puree in Kensington Market.

osgoode hall restaurant

Always impeccable service and food. The chef's menu is a great deal and the room is so lovely. Still a favourite.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi

Saw it last night at TIFF. Great movie about the pursuit of excellence and the father/son dynamic.

ISO plastic/inexpensive champagne flutes in TO

I bought 48 champagne glasses at Ikea when they were on sale for .25/each. Kept the box - so easy! I have a party stash of plates, wine glasses and cutlery bought when they were on sale. I also buy inexpensive Ikea fabric to use as a gigantic tablecloth when we have dinner parties for 14-20 people and put tables together.

Hey Meatball on College - Sandwich sizes

Had the Rodfather sandwich today and it was frickin fantastic. Perfect texture, flavour and seasoning. Really enjoyed the small side salad too. Totally worth $11. Now I'm just thinking about when I can go back and have it again!

Grant Van Gameren, Eno Sociale

Makes me suddenly want to go to Enoteca Sociale! He is a true talent.

Loblaws at Queen and Portland

Saw a Loblaws sign up today on the new building at Queen and Portland. I had given up hope that it would actually happen. Does anyone have any information about it?

Sunday night dinner near the Panasonic Theatre?

The Queen and Beaver on Elm Street is very casual and the food is fantastic!

Goody’s Diner – Finally an Ontario candidate for Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives… and it’s in Scarborough

Went to Goody's on Thursday with a co-worker after reading all this Chowhound buzz. The burgers were beyond awesome, a candidate for best burger ever - and we've been on a Scarborough burger quest for over a year now. Good quality and very good value! The father/son chef/owners were super nice and the waitress was also great. I also enjoyed the location next to the jail - gave it some street cred. Highly recommend! We posted a menu back up at our office and I think we will have a big crowd joining us for lunch next week.

Churros equipment

The batter mix comes with a plastic bag and tip to make churros.

Where to buy Almonds?

I buy nuts including raw almonds at costco. Very good price and quality.

Bringing the SO to Toronto for the first time, looking for advice...

Good suggestions. Dundas West and Ossington are now like the Plateau. The Black Hoof or the Hoof Cafe are amazing! Delux on Ossington is one of my favourites or Foxley for small plates. Delux is open for Cuban lunch. Guu is further away, but it is so much fun and the food is crazy yummy.

Bridal Shower Brunch Venues

I went to a Bridal Shower brunch at Czhoski's on Queen West. They had the top floor for us, which was very nice. Great setting and they had a special menu for us with options. The dessert was made by the bride's mother. We did, however, end up drinking all their Cava. It was really fun.

Cheesemongers in TO . . . any hidden gems?

I've bought cheese at La Fromagerie (excellent!), St. Lawrence Market, Cheese Boutique, Shay Cheese delivery box. The cheese that had guests enraptured was some French cheese from Costco (Saint Morgon). They have some great crackers too!

We've ordered from the sausagemaker.com It is out of Buffalo and was no problem. Arrived quickly. They had lots of really cool stuff.

where to find cake decorating supplies in toronto canada

I've used Golda's. It is mail order out of Mississauga and worked well. Extensive on-line catalogue.

Help me find "burger bliss" in New York!

Had the awesome burger today at the Spotted Pig. Pure burger Nirvana! Came with shoestring fries with rosemary and garlic and the burger was topped with Roguefort cheese. No reservations and it is extremely popular, so we went exploring the new High Line rail turned into a linear park nearby while waiting for our table. My favourite day in Manhattan!

Black Hoof Cafe

We finally went for brunch yesterday. Bone marrow donuts with cherries inside. Buckwheat and rabbit pancakes. Suckling pig eggs benny with jalapeno hollandaise. French Press with coffee. Dundas Street going by. It was spectacular! I can't think of anywhere with more delicious and interesting food!

Fresh oysters - retail, not resto

I buy unshucked oysters from Oyster Boy. They are always fantastic, a great price and they give you the shallot sauce and fresh horseradish to go with them.

Black Hoof Cafe

It looks as though the Black Hoof Cafe is opening today! It is across the street from the Black Hoof at Dundas and Grace/Gore Vale. The paper is off the windows and they were writing the menu on the chalkboard this morning. Open for lunch and then for the evening. Can't wait to try it out.

Short lunch break ideas near Bay and Dundas

Trinity Church cafe is a really special place. Very informal with cafeteria style home-cooked food. Japango has great sushi.

The Stockyards Smokehouse & Larder

Had dinner at the Stockyards tonight and it was out of this world. Beef brisket on french bread, pulled pork sandwich, fried chicken, potato salad and cole slaw. The meat was super tender and nicely smoked. Lots of tanginess in the sauces that I really enjoy. The fried chicken was unbelievably moist and great flavour. I also loved the salads. Only problem was the place was full of smoke from the exhaust, but we hardly looked up while digging in.

If I eat nothing else when in Toronto - I need to try/eat

The Black Hoof on Dundas Street West has the most interesting and exciting food that I've had in Toronto. The menu is small and you have to be adventurous and willing to try new stuff. Last Friday I had scallops with a bone marrow sauce that was out of this world. The Hoof is small and no reservations, but a very special place.

Curing Salt

We ordered curing salts from the sausage maker in Buffalo. They ship to Canada no problem. Received it quickly. Lots of great supplies for curing your own meat.

Eaton Centre Food Court

The Salad King is just north east of the Eaton Centre off on Yonge on Gould. It is inexpensive and has amazing food that even pleases vegans.

Wineries near Barcelona?

We are currently in Barcelona and just toured the Cava wineries Codorniu and Freixenet yesterday, and they were awesome. You can get there by the local train from Sants station. You should call ahead to book the tours - they have English tours at certain times. We booked for Codorniu's 1:30 pm tour. To got to Codorniu, you take a taxi from the train station. Freixenet is right across the street from the train station. Both tours were about 1.5 hours long, had a short audio visual and then they took us to the Cava "caves" where they store the wine underground. Spectacular!! Both took us on a trolly "train" through the storage areas. Then there was a tasting and a shop to purchase wines. Both were impressive facilities in very picturesque settings. I highly recommend it. Next week we are going to go to the Penedes wineries. Haven't decided which ones yet - Jean Leon and Torres likely.

where to buy brisket

Gasparro's on Bloor, just east of Ossington. Phone and order ahead.
