Richmond/San Pablo Taco Trucks

Well, there's a new truck parked next to Estrella at Nevin and 23rd in downtown Richmond. The truck is permanently installed in the large parking lot. There are several tables and some welcome shade on a hot day. The menu is similar to the restaurant's but the prices are lower. I had chicken enchiladas and a Coke for $7.
Enter the lot on Nevin.

Vallejo: Havana Sol - finding the holy grill at last ... Authentic Cubanos with house-made Cuban bread

Went today for lunch but a sign said they are now open only for dinner starting at 4 pm.

Point Richmond deli blues...

I recently had a hot link at The Spot. It was mediocre and the counter guy was grumpy. But it was pretty cheap.

El Tonayense - torta al pastor (and other places)

I eat a torta weekly at Los Picudos in San Pablo. It is still solid.
Try the milanesa de res.

Hidden City Cafe is one of the East Bay's best brunch spots. Who knew?

About 10 days ago on a Saturday I went in looking for the typical brunch menu. They have had some terrific dishes in the past like lamb hash, carnitas-fueled dishes, etc. My server warned me the service would be slow due to a new chef. I asked about the weekend brunch menu and he said there wasn't one. Hmmm. I asked what happened and he said the previous chef had quit. I stayed for some very pedestrian eggs but left disappointed. I hope they can recover.

looking for a great torta

I'm a big fan of Los Picudos' tortas in San Pablo. They use very fresh ingredients, toast them nicely, make a number of refreshing fruit drinks like the vampiro tropical, and are extra friendly. As rworange points out, be sure to get the queso fresco as your cheese selection. They have some tasty salsas to prime your taste buds while you wait. But the wait is usually short. That does it...I'm going back tomorrow.

Angeline's Louisiana Kitchen

I had lunch there today. At 1 pm there were only 3 occupied tables and the service was prompt. The lunch combo of gumbo and an oyster po'boy was excellent. The cup of gumbo had several shrimp and lots of sausage. I thought it was not spicy enough, but that's just my taste. The po'boy was on a nice roll with several tasty fried oysters, lettuce, pickle, and mayo. With a coke and tip, about $16. I would definitely return.

San Pablo: Tortas Los Chilangos – Ricos Eskimos, banana aqua frescas, strawberry jalapeno tamales and legal elote

Your review reminds me of negotiating a minefield.
Glad you're out in front, rworange!

Lunch near Hwy 58 between Bakersfield and Barstow?

Driving from Bay Area to Las Vegas and will want lunch around Bakerfield, but could go further east to Tehachapi or beyond if it was worth it for a good lunch spot convenient to Hwy 58.
Any ideas?

SOS in El Cerrito

I'm glad El Cerrito is not Berkeley. I don't miss interacting with the "community" of panhandlers at the Solano or Vine St. Peet's locations.
El Cerrito has a diverse, if not upscale, bunch of restaurants. If you need Berkeley-style, go to Berkeley. Why bring that to El Cerrito? Vive la difference!

San Pablo: Food Barn - grocery, panaderia, carneceria ... 80 tortas 80 … with a sami-sosa torta

I should have taken the big hint offered by the food gods when I noticed I was the only customer at noon on a Saturday in the otherwise busy supermarket.

Richmond - Catahoula Coffee Company & Roastery ... Java that doesn't bite

I second the comments on Catahoula's Lola's blend coffee. This is a very nice alternative to the often-charred coffees from Peets and Starbucks.
Tim says he's about a month from the true opening but you can get a pound of fresh-roasted coffee anytime it seems. Just drop by and he may give you a special espreso shot...

Yes, they did use the sandwich press. Their vampiro was not as good as the one at Los Picudos. One down, seventy-nine to go!

San Pablo: Food Barn - grocery, panaderia, carneceria ... 80 tortas 80 … with a sami-sosa torta

I tried a "Plaza Mexico" torta Saturday. It's true that the roll is enormous, but the filling was substandard. This torta featured paper-thin pollo milanesa and a cold under-cooked hot dog. The best part was the chipotle pepper.
There is no place to sit except in your car in the broken glass-filled parking lot.
The torta plus a blender vampiro drink cost $11.25. Not a good value IMHO.

For my money, the best torta in San Pablo is at Los Picudos on San Pablo at Church Lane. Their tortas are not enormous but are well-toasted with fresh and tasty fillings.

Saul's in Berkeley

Last time we were there several unsupervised children were running around the restaurant and the backseating area generally seemed like a poorly-run daycare center. The parents seemed like they could not care less. We began to get headaches even before our order was taken and we left.

Saturday Night dinner between Manchester, NH airport and Newport, NH

We're driving from the Manchester airport to Newport, NH Saturday night around 9 pm after a long plane ride from Oakland.
We'll be stiff, dazed, jet-lagged, and full of Southwest Air's peanuts.
Any advice on a pleasant easy-to-find restaurant enroute? Something not too heavy in a quiet place would be nice.
