Sushi - two different places - Glen Burnie area

Signs just started popping up in my neighborhood about East Moon Asian Bistro that delivers (This one that has locations in Bowie and VA and another place of the same name in Ellicott City) Does anyone have an experience with the one that delivers?

Second question - on B&A Blvd, we passed a place that I had not seen before called Just Sushi. Anyone been there?

Did the standard searches on this board, not much came up.

Cooking DVDs? Alton Brown? America's Test Kitchen? What's good?

I'd put a vote in for anything Alton Brown. He not only shows you how to make a dish, but alot of the chemistry of cooking and why you do this versus that or use this type of pan instead of another kind, use this type of ingredient and gives the reasons. His shows are not only entertaining, but quite educational.

As a side note, he is my total geek love, so I am a bit partial (and he rides BMW motorcycles) and the only man I'd leave my husband for - just kidding. LOL

Thank you so much. That is awesome. I'm getting more info from my sister to find out exactly where he lives.I'm pretty sure he's not in Navy housing, I think he's renting a house with a couple of other guys. I'll keep you guys posted. The romance place sounds great.

Albany

Oh my, I'm not sure. The family just refers to Albany (maybe that's the closest airport??) I know nothing about the area at all, hence, my request. She's in Boston and will just be visitng after Christmas. How far away is Saratoga Springs from Albany? I'll ask my sister if she can find out information without being "nosey". I want it to be a surprise for the newlyweds. Thanks for the information.

Albany

Hi fellow chowhounders,
I never get on this particular forum (I'm in MD, however am a native from NYC). I have a question regarding Albany in general and good places for food. Here's the scenario....

My neice who is in Boston, and her husband who is in Albany in the Navy in Nuclear school for subs , will be spending their time together after Christmas (he has to be in school/work during the holiday). I thought a nice Christmas gift would be to give them a night out at a restaurant so they wouldn't have to cook one night. (she will only have a short time to spend with him as she has to get back to Boston for grad school as does he for his school/work).

So, is Albany a large city? Are there any recommendations on restaurants? (at this point, cuisine doesn't matter - I'll find that out from her mom what they prefer). What I don't want to do is send them a million miles away for a night out, as they are newlyweds and I'm sure they would want to get home quickly LOL! Or, now that I think about it, maybe a catered dinner at home??

Any ideas, suggestions? Thanks in advance... I'm sure you guys are as awesome as the Mid-Atlantic folks!

College Park - Walking distance from U of M

Ok my chowhound buddies, I need some help. My neice attends U of M and she's an extremely busy college student with a heavy schedule that lives in a dorm. I was going to cook her a week of meals, but am told that the dorms have no place to store food. I'm looking for a place that has great food that college students would like. My idea, is as a Christmas present to get her a gift certificate for her and a friend to get a good meal that they could walk to. They would be under 21 so there wouldn't be a bar bill. I was thinking that maybe $50.00 to somewhere might be good, but I haven't lived in PG County or been to College Park in 25 years.

So, what would be a good place with good food that she could walk to (or does College Park have any public transportation now??)? Also, would $50.00 be enough for two people?

Please advise and thank you in advance. I love you guys!! If you all have any other ideas I'm open to suggestions!

New restaurant near Arundel Mills - George Martin's GrillFire

Ok we went back for hubby's birthday dinner and had 2 friends with us. This time we sat at a table instead of the bar. The place was packed (Friday night). Our 2 friends started out with the potato leek soup - amazingly good. I had the BLT salad (as usual) and he again got the crab and shrimp cocktail. Just as nice as before.

Entree dishes included a handcut petit filet and baked potato for me, He again got the larger handcut filet with the roasted mushrooms with truffle butter. Both great. Our friends had the sushi grade Ahi tuna - rare and the Tuscan chicken with melted mozzarealla and balsamic tomato. Both said the dishes were excellent. Dessert was shared by the table with the make your own S'mores and the the cheesecake topped with fresh berries and whipped cream. All were great.

Service was good and attentive. I'm sorry to hear that rolito1013 has not had the experiences with the service and the food that we did. We'll still go back as there are many other things I want to try.

Interesting. I haven't been for lunch and haven't sat at a table as we usually sit at the bar. I think they must have had an off day because I had their fries and they were good. We're supposed to go back for dinner some time this week. I'll report back. I'll be disappointed if your review rings true when we go back.

We went back last night because I just didn't feel like cooking. I had the chicken pot pie - really good. The crust was nice and light and flaky. Nice chunks of white meat chicken and nice veggies. DH had the Ahi (I think) tuna. He enjoyed that. We also had the waffle/ice cream/fresh berries dessert and the sorbet. All lovely! Hope this place makes it - It's going to be a regular place for us!

OK - We finally checked this place out. Just let me say.... WOW! We had a lovely time. The decor is lovely as well as the staff. We chose to sit at the bar (normal for us). They have an open kitchen where you can see the chef's but they can't see you. We started out with the lump crabmeat and shrimp cocktail appetizer with mango salsa and cocktail sauce. Very good - the shrimp were a nice size and they were grilled which gave a nice flavor to the shrimp. oh - before that they serve you a little loaf of sourdough bread with a compound butter made of blue cheese, oilive oil and herbs. Very nice.

DH ordered the handcut filet with roasted mushrooms and truffle butter. He was drooling over how good it was. The steak was cooked exactly how he ordered (med. rare).

I ordered the BLT salad which was romain lettuce wedged with pickled carrots, tomato and a creamy herb dressing (BTW - I was told all dressings are made in house). It was great! Then I had the sea scallops in their Thai sauce - very good. I expected it to be hotter, but that came later, so you got the flavor of Thai, but then about 30 seconds later you got the heat, it wasn't too hot, but enough for you to notice. I can't wait to try the rest of the preperations.

DH got dessert - get this - it was "make your own" S'mores. They bring you out a cast iron little pot that the light up so you have your own little camp fire and they bring you a plate of their in house made milk chocolate with marshmellows and graham crackers. So you toast your own marshmellows add the chocolate and just WOW! totally creative and a great idea. DH said the chocolate was really good.

At the end of it all, instead of getting some sort of mint, you get a thing of pink cotton candy in a wire basket. It was totally cool.

So, all in all - a great experience, great staff, innovative ideas, nice decor. We'll be back!

Convection Frying???

OK - I was half watching Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and I walked in on someone who was frying chicken via a convection oven. I have a convection oven. What I saw of this was that she heated the oil up in a metal baking pan in the oven, then added the coated chicken and flipped it half way through. It looked good, but is this possible in a normal every day convection oven that you would have in house? I have three settings for convection - bake, roast and broil. I'm baffled by this technique. Has anyone done this? If so, results? I'd love to try it as I'm terrified of trying to fry on the cooktop, besides the obvious mess it makes.

Comments, suggestions, ideas... all welcome!

Cook and Freeze for Company Meals?

I'd break out the crockpot!

I'm scared of...

Frying things, like making a really good fried chicken. Would love too, but 1) I don't want to deal with the grease splatters that will go all over the place 'cuz it's a pain to clean up. 2) I'm afraid I'll cook it too fast or too slow and I'll wind up with burnt parts on the outside and not done on the inside. It's just not something I grew up with.

Coke for breakfast?

Not unusual at all. I have a diet coke in the morning, usually when I get to work which is pretty early. I know lots of people, including myself that hate coffee. Love the smell of coffee, can't stand the taste no matter how much cream and sugar you use.

ETA: when I drink something warm/hot, my mind goes into "comfy mode" with the thought of jammies and going to sleep. Drinking something cold wakes me up.

Household food battles: Foods you love but your loved ones hate (and what to do about it!)

One way I solve this is that when he is traveling, I make whatever I love and he hates, No problem. Other than that, I have been known to make two different dinners as long as it's not a long involved process, it's not that big of a deal. I do however, tend to just make the stuff I love when he travels

The end of Good Eats :(

I absolutely adore him. My favorite episode was when he went salmon fishing and created a smoker out of a cardboard box, an electric element, hand fan, some sawdust and a pie plate. Freakin' awesome!

Take out crab resource between DC and the PA line?

Seaside carry out on Crain Hwy (Business Rt. 3) has excellent crabs - and from my understanding, they only serve Maryland crabs.

Recommendations for ARundel Mills, or Columbia, Md?

There's a new place near Arundel Mills called George Martin's GrillFire. One of my co-workers went there and said it was very good. Haven't yet been there myself, but it's an option.

There is also a Thai place on Dorsey Rd. called Little Spice. Not sure of the hours of operation, but I'm told that if you like Thai it's really good.

OK, WHO is going out for dinner post earthquake this evening?

Anyone who delivers is fine by me. They shut our building down at 3:00, thankfully I only live a mile from home. Hubby is in Massachusetts for the week. He didn't know anything about it until I was finally able to get through on the phone lines.

First earthquake for me - it was a bit weird. Not horrifying, but most certainly strange.
