Mid-Afternoon Cozy Restaurant near MSG

Just saw this - The Breslin looks perfect!! A bit further than I'd hoped for, but the atmosphere seems like what we're looking for and the menu is great!

Thank you!

Oh that looks like it might be great. Funny you suggested Blue Ribbon - a friend just mentioned how much she enjoyed a bite there some time ago. Thank you!

Thanks for that suggestion - Haru looks like it could be an option - do you have personal experience? I notice they have a location in times square and really want to avoid sushi that's gimmicky, etc.

Thank you!

That's it? Any other ideas from fellow CH'ers? I am at a total loss for where to go as there are SO many options. I know it's a broad question, but any other help is much appreciated.

Sushi (simple, authentic) or steak/burger type restaurant
Somewhat near MSG but not in immediate area as apparently there isn't much there.
Intimate if possible - definitely not looking for hip/loud, etc. This will be a Saturday night which I know is a challenge for the above reason and for getting a reservation
Less than $80 for dinner for two not including alcohol

Thanks again :)

Toddler breakfast ideas

I work with children in my profession, and I will say that Ellyn Satter is amazing. Also look up Katja Rowell. The most important thing is to not make food a battle ground. Please read Ellyn's book if you have any involvement in a child's mealtime (parent, caregiver, etc.). It can make all the difference in the world.

In terms of breakfast foods - really anything your child enjoys! It doesn't have to be something that's particular to breakfast (i.e. doesn't have to be a waffle, eggs, etc.) Try foods he enjoys at other times of the day too.

We could expand...the problem is, upon looking at the NoMad menu, I don't think it's quite what we're looking for. But thank you. Flatiron is more what we're looking for, but it's a bit far (just in terms of timing) and there's no prices on the menu online! (I know this is not a big deal to many, but would be helpful for us...)

True though, it's easy to get anywhere with a cab...

Thanks all!

Thanks for responding - all very good to know. Thinking about it - we could just eater later - maybe 5:30/6...but on a Saturday night not sure what that would look like in terms of reservations, etc. Any thoughts for outside the MSG area - walking distance, but we like to walk, so that's probably a pretty wide area? K-town could work I guess, but not quite what I was thinking.
I will look at the Ace though...
Any additional thoughts greatly appreciated!

Mid-Afternoon Cozy Restaurant near MSG

Need a mid-afternoon (perhaps 4:00) Saturday spot near MSG before an event. Looking for burgers/steak or traditional, high quality sushi. Looking for a cozy warm (even romantic?) atmosphere - nothing too noisy/cool/hip..just simple and delicious.

I'm familiar with the Chelsea area, but not at all with the area near MSG.

Ideally less than $80 for everything including tax/tip - not including alcohol.
Thanks!!

We went years ago, but it was a very solid meal. I had a sushi platter, he had chirashi. Delicious, fresh, and the service was amazing.

Help! Need kosher coconut macaroon recipe!

From recs on a post I put up about Passover desserts I made the ones by Alice Medrich. They look pretty hilarious-I need a better way to form them. But they're SO delicious! I just left out the vanilla. Good luck!

Couscous as a main course?

I love couscous and have been looking at making these 2 recipes - don't know if you've seen this already:

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/kathleen-daelemans/vegetable-couscous-stew-recipe/index.html

http://arabic-food.blogspot.com/2011/...

I am still looking for a veggie stew that was served with couscous that was from Morroco or Yemen, I am not sure which and have never been able to find it (had it once in a restaurant).

I like your idea of serving the salads with dinner - this way everyone can pick on this and that and chat. I would appreciate that if I was a guest, as opposed to a more formal first/second, etc.

Don't know if any of that helps :)

These look incredibly delicious!!! Thank you for sharing the recipe! I won't be making it for tomorrow, but we've been invited to someone else's house later in the week, and I would love to bring these then!

Help with Passover Dessert Please!

So decided to go with Deborah's lemon kisses and the Medrich macaroons!

A question though - her recipe http://food52.com/recipes/16667-alice... calls for either shards of unsweetned coconut or shredded sweetened coconut.

I wasn't paying attention at the grocery, and bought shredded unsweetened. Someone in the comments on the above link said that changed the recipe dramatically and she had to add more liquid.

Could this be true? Does anyone think it will affect the recipe like that? If I have to I'll go out and get sweetened instead, just hoping not to! :

)

Thanks!

Happy Passover!

You too! We don't really celebrate, but being invited was very nice, and we're looking forward to tomorrow. Are you hosting a sedar? I can't imagine doing that. Bringing dessert has been enough. lol Have fun :)

Help with Passover Dessert Please!

Thanks everyone!! Ok yes now that you've all mentioned, I completely forgot...they don't observe kashrut but they are not going to mix meat and dairy at the sedar...I don't cook with margarine, so I'm thinking the matzoh is out. But it does sound delicious!

I like the idea of macaroons though...easy+cookie sheet=possibly perfect :)

Could anyone recommend a recipe they like? I am looking and there are tons!
From a brief search, came up with
http://www.marthastewart.com/314385/chocolate-chunk-macaroons
and
http://food52.com/recipes/16667-alice-medrich-s-new-classic-coconut-macaroons
and

Thoughts?

Thank you!!

Help with Passover Dessert Please!

We've been invited, and my job is to make dessert. My goal is to make something very delicious, and very inexpensive.

I am looking at the Chocolate "crack"ers from Smitten Kitchen http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2009/04/chocolate-caramel-crackers/

and chocolate chip merengues from Food52
http://food52.com/blog/3691-chewy-cho...

to give you a sense of what I'm considering....

Part of the problem is that we own cookie sheets and loaf pans, no cake pans/bundt pans though I guess I could buy a disposable foil one.

Any thoughts/recommendations/suggestions? Has anyone tried the above two recipes?

As a side note, I have unsweetened chocolate and cocoa in the house and was hoping to maybe incorporate one or the other and not have to buy lots of ingredients.

Done rambling now :

)

Thanks :)

Recipes from Smitten Kitchen blog.....what are your favorites??

So excited to have found this thread! I have known about SK for a while but never took the plunge. Made three of her recipes already and so, so pleased.

The smashed chickpea salad is amazing - addictive, healthy, and incredibly delicious. I've had it in a pita with veggies, on crackers, and tmw trying it on rice for a nutritious lunch!

Will non-fat greek yogurt (Fage) replace lowfat yogurt in this recipe?

Well....it was done at 30 minutes, not between 35 and 40, but I think my oven runs a bit hot.

It didn't rise as much as expected..

But it's quite tasty! A little bit dry maybe - I think I would cook it at slightly lower than 350 next time, or maybe less time.

Overall not bad at all! And, it would seem, not terribly unhealthy :)
