Is There Any Decent Food in Livingston Now? Any?
Well we haven't lived there for some time - when we were there we use to go to Morristown for sushi...there was a little tiny place upstairs just off the square. I can't remember the name but the sushi was wonderful. Now we go to Masa in Allendale. The best sushi. The best!
I doubt we'll try Zen again after the two awful experiences we had there, but I'm hoping to try some places in Montclair...thanks though...
Can this recipe be made on the stove instead of in the oven?
Great idea - thanks...
Still haven't gotten a chance to make it, but hope to soon!

Oh well...
Lithos is good? I ate at the Italian place is use to be - can't remember the name.
Zen is awful!! Imo...

Thanks everyone - such great tips!

@mamachef - I'll let you know how it turns out - thanks for the tip about the potatoes! Paulj that sounds like a great way - I like the idea of cutting it into smaller pieces as well - thanks!
Can this recipe be made on the stove instead of in the oven?
Thank you! I will try this week...hopefully will be a success!

Use to live there, was nothing to eat in town. Nothing. Except a little Italian sandwich place on route 10 near the post office.
May be revisiting the area soon-
Has anything changed?
Not looking for chain restaurants, etc. Just good, not too expensive eats. Ethnic is a plus
Thanks!
Can this recipe be made on the stove instead of in the oven?
My friend gave me a recipe for an incredible delicious salmon dish. She baked hers, but I can't use the oven right now because it's so warm here (we don't use the oven from May until September), and I'm wondering if I can cook it somehow on the stove.
The recipe: (in her words)
Saute some onion and garlic until nicely browned
Add parsley and cilantro
Add 2 nice tomatoes
Cook for about 10 minutes total
Add a can or two of chickpeas, and lemon juice, as well as some preserved lemon
Cook for a minute or two
Then put salmon in a pan and cover with the above mixture
You can add sliced potatoes to the pan as well.
Bake for about 25 minutes
Can I do this in a saute pan on the stove? Just add the salmon to the pan and then cover and cook?
It was SOO delicious!!!!!!
Low-fat, low-calories vegetarian snacks
Maybe not terribly exciting, but greek yogurt with 1/2 a cut up banana and 1/4 cup of chocolate strawberry granola. Tastes very decadent but is still healthy and relatively low cal-
Also goat cheese on anything makes a great snack - goat cheese has a lot less fat and sodium (generally) than cow's milk cheese. You can find great soft spreadable kinds.
The old standby of apples and pb -just a little pb goes a long way
The Fresh Market coming to Montvale - Thoughts?
Agree with cp - Though I remember Wegmans being an interesting store, I'm so disappointed that all this area seems to be good for is opening up more stores and increasing commercial selling space. I guess that's the case in many places, but it seems Bergen county has a special affinity for building and building and building. I'm guessing this could get off topic if I keep writing, but I'm truly disappointed in Dipiero's, and in all the other small stores and small farms that sold out (or were forced out). The entire character of Bergen county has changed...for the worse I think...
Organic produce- Northern New Jersey
I'm always on the lookout for organic produce from smaller vendors as well. Very hard to find! I mainly stick with wf in the colder months and the markets in the summer. I'll be interested to see if anyone else has any feedback...
Seeking a Restaurant Serving Free Range, Local Beef
So Creekstone Farms is not pasture raised, but seems much better than the average factory farmed poop that most restaurants use. Interesting stuff...
Seeking a Restaurant Serving Free Range, Local Beef
@scunge - love this, thank you. I will give them a call. Love their way of farming!
Seeking a Restaurant Serving Free Range, Local Beef
Yes, I know they're a supplier, thanks. But I'd expect that they would state where the meat is purchased from - what farm/company, etc. A supplier could be sourcing from anywhere-
Seeking a Restaurant Serving Free Range, Local Beef
Hmm...thank you - but after looking at their website, with the exception of the organic meat, I don't see where they state the source of their beef. Maybe I'm missing it?
Seeking a Restaurant Serving Free Range, Local Beef
Any restaurant in the city that states where its beef originates from? I don't mean Sysco/Tyson cr&p - I mean local, free range, grass fed, idyllic country meadow cows - lol
Even better would be somewhere that I could get steak too :)
Thanks!
Wanted: Chicken and beef soup bones in Bergen County area
The Stop and Shop in Wyckoff sells Bell and Evans Chicken Backs - less than $1.00 a package usually. FYI they only have them a few days of the week - butcher told me to call and check before I came...
LBI area Easter brunch, dinner, lunch ??? Any ideas, always at a loss for dining in this area!
Adding my two sense here...we always visit LBI in the off season because the on season is insanity (at least to us). The lack of food options is a little scary...we've had great luck at the Black Whale for simple seafood/bar food (slight obsession with the oyster sandwich there), and other than that we make use of the over priced grocery, and Uncle Wil's for bkfst. I had really liked the Pearl Street (I think that's what it was called) little sandwich place last year, but on our last visit, the owner wasn't quite as appropriate as the owner of an establishment should be, and I see no reason to return there... We're planning to head back to LBI this year, and will yet again be asking "where do you want to go for lunch? I don't know, where do you want to go?" lol
Best Sushi in Montclair?
Bamboo Asian Bistro? I was looking at it but it seems to have mixed reviews and sushi did not seem to be as well liked as the other types of food there...
Best Sushi in Montclair?
Funny I was going to write asking about Aki tonight - while I was looking up Toro I saw the entry for Aki and was wondering if it's any good. Got good reviews and looks interesting. Though glad the music doesn't suit the restaurant ;)
Thanks for the rec!
Best Sushi in Montclair?
Thanks - looks good. Do you know if there's a menu for them online? They don't seem to have a website and I can't find a menu anywhere else-
But sounds like we'll probably head there :)
Best Sushi in Montclair?
Meeting a friend for a bite one day next week - we won't be able to meet until close to 9 btw. We'd like to eat sushi and Montclair is the perfect midpoint.
Any recommendations on the best sushi there? I'm looking for quality, nothing fancy shmancy, just good, clean, fresh fish. Good rolls would help too as my friend is not the adventurous sort... :)
Toro sushi seemed to get high marks on one of those "other" review sites, but some seem mixed, and frankly I'm not sure how accurate that site is anyway!
Thanks!
Chipotle coming to East Brunswick
+1 for Moe's. We have them up here and I have to say, it's the only chain restaurant I'll eat at. Seemingly fresh, can be healthy, love that they have a tofu option, and it's inexpensive! Good for a quick healthy meal on the run (sometimes anyway)
Chipotle coming to East Brunswick
East Brunswick was a wasteland for food when I was growing up there...and sadly it still seems to be. All I remember are chain restaurants as discussed by previous posters. When I was a kid Stuff Yer Face and Red Lobster were the big treats...sigh...the only actual good food I remember was from a place called European Provisions in South River...such great sandwiches!!
I have a family member still living in E.B. and I'm sure he'll be excited about Chipotle...he's already a fan of Baja, and I understand Chipotle is better?
I Hate Organic Natural Peanut Butter
I haven't read through every post, so maybe I missed this, but the 365 brand of peanut butter (not the organic one) is great, all natural, and has no added sugar. It does require stirring, but the end result is delicious, and tastes better than Skippy! :) Definitely refrigerate...
edited to add the organic one has sugar in it for some reason...but I'm still looking for an organic brand for the reasons will47 listed above...
Best Sushi in Northern NJ
Masa is amazing!! Our favorite sushi restaurant. Love how the fish is always fresh and delicate, never like the giant, icky, and seemingly ancient pieces that so many restaurants serve. More does NOT mean better. Service is great, and their appetizers are amazing! We've had the omakase as well and it's so good!!
somewhere convenient near Short Hills Mall
Haven't eaten at the short hills mall in a long time, but down JFK parkway is a simple Italian restaurant called Calabria's. It's not amazing and fairly standard, but it's alright if you just want something quick. Pizza is ok, service is fine. We use to order from there sometimes when we were in the area. Again not amazing, but perfectly ok for a simple meal.
