Wine Country - CHALLENGE

If you find yourself in downtown Sonoma, for a cheap eats lunch, go to Sunflower Cafe. They have smoked duck panini to die for.

Loard's Ice Cream, El Cerrito

My favorite flavors at Loard's are butter brickle, butterscotch marble and the pineapple coconut. YUM! I've been going to the one in Alameda since childhood...

HELP! My just-out-of-the-fridge mascarpone/cream/chocolate mixture isn't turning out!

I'm making chocolate tiramisu and the recipe called for a mixture of whipping cream, chocolate and mascarpone to be refrigerated overnight and whipped up the next day. I've made this recipe 2x before and I have never had this problem, but when I went to whip the mixture, it was acting as if I had overwhipped the mixture when I had JUST started? Is it too cold? Should I wait for some of the chill to wear off and start again? Help!

Here's the recipe...

Old Port Lobster Shack Happy Hour... have you been?

I didn't realize that they had happy hour 5-7 (Mon-Thurs)... Is it a mob scene? I'm supposed to go to dinner there tonight but I don't want to have to fight for a table.

Potluck - I'd like to use my fondue pot...

Oh wow! Bonnie's Buffalo Chicken Dip sounds perfect! (For all the *good* food that I eat and love, I love bar food!) I'll try it out using the fondue pot to keep it warm this weekend... Thanks!

Potluck - I'd like to use my fondue pot...

...which has been sitting in it's box since I received it 3 years ago as a weddng present.

Any ideas for something savory? I don't want to make a traditional cheese fondue, nor do I want to make a dessert fondue. Was thinking of something like a pesto based dip? Or even tomato based? I'm not opposed to a dip with some cheese...

Please, any ideas or recipes would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

ideas for playing hookey in SF?

I've actually thought a lot about this, funny that you should post!

I'd go to:
Tartine Bakery
Canteen
Bi-Rite Creamery
Ligurian Bakery and/or Brioche Bakery

starting to not feel too well... ahem...

Looking for Paris restaurant open Sunday night

I third Louis Vins! Had the BEST meal of my 2 week trip (Northern Italy and Paris for 3 days) here.

http://www.fifi.fr/html/louisvins_eng.htm

I don't speak French but there was one very nice server who described the (French only) menu well enough for us to get an idea of what we were ordering. Especially loved the foie gras w/ egg and the pork (foot?) starters...

Italy trip part 2 of 3 - Siena

Great summary! I'm headed off to Siena in a week and half so this is very helpful!

Wedding cake question

I really like chocolate w/ coconut filling and the other a white cake w/ peach.

Venue for a large party?

How about the private room at Empress of China?
Also, how about: Thirsty Bear? The upstairs area at Perbacco?

best roti prata?

I was just thinking of Langkawi. We ordered it the last time (few weeks ago) and it was really good and fun to eat.

Toppings Too (Filipino food), Union City report w/ pics

I had take out from Toppings Too a few months ago. I really enjoyed the sisig. It was my first time to have it (for some reason, my family doesn't have this in our repretoir). It was made with regular meat and not snout parts, ears, etc. as I'm told that it traditionally is.

I used to enjoy Fernandos but during my last 2 visits, they served some kind of (American???) cheese on my avocado dish and on top of my beans. Not a big fan of American cheese with my Mexican food...

5 hour layover at OAK looking for affordable breakfast

Another vote for Ole's!

Also, I sometimes like South Shore Cafe for breakfast...

NYC CHer finds favorite Red Velvet Cupcakes are in San Leandro, CA.

In no way am I a 'red velvet cake' expert, but when I tried these, I couldn't stomach more than 3 bites. I bought two (because of the rave reviews I read about these cupcakes) and had to throw out both cupcakes. Cake was very dry and dense. The cream cheese frosting lacked any sort of distinct flavor. I also got a slice of the coconut cake and also threw that out after a couple of bites. My husband was not impressed with either product.

But if you must try these, I would suggest you buy just one and try it first before splurging needlessly...

My first attempt at tiramisu...please help!!

I've made this recipe a couple of times and people really liked it. I think I doubled the mascarpone mixture and then topped the whole thing with whipped cream... make sure that you make this AT LEAST the night before so the flavors have time to marry.

Los Gatos

When I was just dating my husband and lived in the area, our favorite Italian place in Los Gatos is:
The Pastaria & Market
49 E. Main Street
(408) 399-3477

Can't remember off-hand if they served veal, but their pastas are very good.

Dessert Tasting Menus?

I dined at Chicago's TRU last week and they have a dessert tasting menu... Do any restaurants in the Bay Area have this? I've had dessert 3 ways at Michael Mina but it was just the one couse. I guess I'm looking for MULTIPLE dessert courses...

Union Square Dining/Bars & upscale b-day dinner rec

How about: Cortez, Foreign Cinema, Myth, Frisson, Canteen, Aziza

Dining within Union Square

A BIG second vote for Cortez!
