Small wedding receiption in Norwich area
We are getting married in my fiance's church in Norwich, live in Old Saybrook but guests (approx 35) will be coming in from Northern CT, southern NH and Boston area. Any recommendations for a restaurant that could accomodate us and has really good food? Will have 8 little ones, ages 1 thro9ugh 9, that we want to make sure are comfortable.
Plan B would be a good caterer and have everyone come back to the home.

Otter Cove formerly Vinnies- Old Saybrook
This restaurant has been opened about a month, in the same location as Vinnies. We had reservations for 19 guests at 7pm this evening. It took thirty minutes for the appetizers to come to the table. The "fiery" calamari lacked heat and taste. Bland and soggy.
My beau's appertizer, "Tex Mex Bites" were tasty and crisp. Good thing he enjoyed them, as he never did get his entree.
My brother's clam chowder was ok.
Approx thirty minutes later our salads came out. Several came out wrong.
The entrees took forever and came out sporadically. The guests who ordered sea bass were served first, approx 5 minutes later those of us who ordered fried seafood were served. Twenty minutes later the filet came out. My beau's chicken entree never arrived at the table. After the filet was served, he was promised it would be next. Five minutes later the server came to the table and announced his entree was given to a different patron. The order was cancelled, he would skip an entree.
My brother and I had fried whole belly clams. They were greasy and tasteless.
The waiter was apologetic and embarrassed. He assured us the manager would come to our table. He also said coffees and desserts would be on the house. He offered cheesecake, chocolate cake and creme broulee. Apparently too many people wanted the creme broulee because the waiter came back and announced the kitchen only had two servings left. Dinner was over by 10 (yes, 3 hours later).
The manager never came. The issue was not pushed. This was a family celebratory dinner and no one wanted it ruined. Several guests were from out of state, however my beau and I live ten minutes away. You can be assured we will not go back nor recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Tradition Thanksgiving Dinner North Central CT
Looking for recs for Thanksgiving dinner. Thank you.
Recommendation - Berlin, CT or Middletown, CT?
I love The Tuscany Grill. Last night I went to the Boci Grill in Cromwell. My date told me they were somehow related but did not know how. I had the broccoli rabe and chicken sausage appetizer...it was excellent. No bitterness in the greens, perfectly sauteed with garlic, chicken sausage was tasty. I asked for them to make it with some hot pepper, and they seasoned it perfectly for me. That and the bread.....and it was a perfect meal. Very generous serving.
louie's lunch---yuck
It is a New Haven icon, but I would never say they serve "great" burgers. In my opinion, their potato salad side was nothing more than bland potato and mayo and certainly overpriced for the tiny plastic cup they serve it in. I would recommend one going there if they chose to dine at the "inventor of the hamburg", but not for the quality of their food.
Slice of Heaven Pizza Cromwell, CT
Just opened up, has anyone tried it? Is this an original location, or are there others in the area?
louis lunch
Hi Sodagirl,
I was there a couple of weeks ago, prior to seeing Hairspray at the Shubert Theatre. Definately a destination for those who want the experience, but not for the quality of their food. I found the burger fresh and hand formed but nothing above average tasting and well done rather than medium rare as advertised. The potato salad was bland and heavy handed on the mayo. The service grumpy and inconsisten. My potato salad came out five minutes after my burger. My friend got her potato salad immediately when she ordered, but had to wait ten minutes longer than I did for her burger. We ordered at the same time, were the third orders of their day and the potato salad is premeasured and ready to be placed on counter.
Forbidden City Bistro in Middletown, CT
I am a fairly new resident of Middletown, and have yet to find a great Chinese restaurant here or in Cromwell. Do you have any recs?
Forbidden City Bistro in Middletown, CT
Dan, I am interested in hearing about it too. I have asked at work and was told it was very upscale. Apparently known for their martini menu, and most specifically their pomegranate martini. Food is supposed to be very good and not at all like the greasy take out on every corner of downtown Middletown.
Italian sausage in Middletown/Cromwell
Thanks. I have been there twice due to recs from this board. The first time I purchased a melt in your mouth prime rib. The second, I ordered a fresh ham. I was shocked when I picked it up and it was frozen solid. I had less than 24 hours to defrost and marinate it. I felt they should have warned me. But I will give their sausage a chance next weekend. Will try the crab cakes another time.
Easter Lunch Along 495 [moved from Boston board]
I am meeting family at The Black Cow in Newburyport, MA. This will be our third Easter there, and we like the food, the setting (on the water) and the service. It is not elegant, but very enjoyable.
Whole Foods in Glastonbury CT - opening day
Thank you for the directions, found it no problem. A lot of people mulling around for samples, but few people checking out at the registers with groceries. They do not have bison steaks yet, but the butcher told me he is getting them in soon. They also have a nice selection of chicken sausage. I love their hot Italian chicken sausage.

Where exactly is it? I would be coming from Middletown. Down 91 to 3. Then to 3. Where to from there?
Restaurants Closing
When the Red Lobster closed in Enfield, a barbq place from W. Springfield came in to open their second location. It was AWFUL. That did not last long, it stayed empty quite awhile then the Hazard Grill opened. Rod and John do a great job there. John makes all the soups and they are terrific. My only complain when I lived that way and ate there often, was the menu NEVER changed. Even the daily specials were the same from one day/week to another.
Enfield,CT/SpringfieldMa Prime Rib
Boy, does that take me back. I lived in Somers and the ex and I were regulars at the Somers Inn. It was great back then. Went there about a year ago and it was awful. The service was slow and rude (yes rude), the food was mediocre at best. I had the swordfish and it was not fresh. Don't think I would go back.
Enfield,CT/SpringfieldMa Prime Rib
I am very familiar with the Hazard Grill, but their menu does not have prime rib. Chicago Sam's is too much a bar atmospher. Yankee Pedlar and Delaney House are great ideas. I will try calling them. If all else fails, I just might do my own. I bought one last month at meadow meats in Middletown, it was great. Thank you
Luna Pizza Cromwell
i will try Pizzeria da Vinci. it is close to where I live. Take out is fine. Thanks
Enfield,CT/SpringfieldMa Prime Rib
Looking for a great place to take a friend for the best prime rib dinner. He has never had prime rib in his whole life. It will be a Sunday dinner 2:00 ish or so. I know a lot of places only serve it Fri and Sat nights. Any suggestions besides the Outback?
Luna Pizza Cromwell
Well, I found Luna Pizza, but it appears to be closed. Any other pizza suggestions in the area? I am not fond of Randy's Worster St.
ORourkes Diner REOPENING - Middletown, Ct
Melilli's in Cromwell on 99 has awesome breakfasts. Their omelets are huge and tasty. Place is small, service is very down home, prices much better than O'Rourkes. Thai Phoon on Main St. in Middletown is very good. I like their Thai Red Snapper. They will also do it with a less expensive fish if you ask. They are very accomodating and support young artists from Wesleyan. Tuscany Grill is right off Main St. and has exceptional service, and excellent food. First and Last is a Wesleyan staple. Pizza and Italian. Stop in at Public Market on Main St. if you want a quick to go lunch. They make sandwiches and also have precooked foods you won't find going through a drive through. Sangwiches just opened up on Main St. I have had their breakfast sandwich there - 2 eggs, cheese, bacon on a hard roll. Tasty and cheap.
Hope this helps. Enjoy the trip.

Does anyone know what happened? Did they close or change locations? I just called to make reservations for tonight, the phone is disconnected. Thank you. Sally
Lunch in the Middletown, Old Saybrook, Branford Triangle.
I second the vote for Typhoon. It is great Thai.
Schubert Theatre New Haven, CT May 2008
It is the Copper Beach Inn in Ivoryton. The food is amazing. Thanks for the info on Bespoke. I am having trouble opening the menu. Will keep trying.
Schubert Theatre New Haven, CT May 2008
A dear friend is turning 50, and I am taking him to a show at the Schubert in May. As he lives up in Longmeadow, MA and I just moved to Middletown, CT., I thought a matinee would work well. Afterwards, I want to take him someplace very nice for dinner. I was thinking of that Inn at Ivoryton, but that is a lot of driving. Does anyone know a restaurant, close to the theatre, that would be of the same quality? I definately do not want Italian.
Thank you
Sally
Hops, Manchester, CT - Closed???
Wow, I don't know where my head was but I could of sworn Harvard's was gone. Glad to know it is there, I think they rocked over HOPS.
Hops, Manchester, CT - Closed???
I was out that way a few months ago, and John Harvards was gone. Is there another one in a different location?
middletown, ct - fresh fish monger?
I am moving to Middletown in two weeks. Love fresh fish. I know City Fish in Wethersfield, but hoping there is a fresh fish retail store right in Middletown.
ITALIAN BREAD IN CT
Hi Mary Ann, I don't know if this is helpful or not, but I used to go to a bakery in Milford that sold Bronx bread. The hard crusted Italian bread. Many of the stores in Milford had their bread delivered from the Bronx. North of there, you might want to try the First and Last Bakery on Maple Ave. in Hartford (across from their restaurant of the same name). They have really good bread there as well.
