Colorado Family in Vancouver for 3 nights and Victoria for 3 nights. We want to eat like locals...guidance please!

We are a family of five, teenagers and adults with a wide range of culinary cravings. Everyone is adventurous, except Dad but he'll roll with the group. We would like to eat local cuisine when possible and avoid chains. That said, we are seeking several inexpensive suggestions and a few splurges for special dinners or experiences. We may just pick up coffee and baked items most mornings but then we'll be on the town. We are staying at the Sylvia Hotel in the English Bay area and we do have transportation available. Thanks for your ideas!

Need Affordible Telluride Lunch & Dinner Spots For Family with Teenagers

Fabulous!! All the spots you mentioned sound perfect. La Cocina de Luz sounds yummy! I heard that 221 South Oak was pretty special so we may have to try it out. Crazy Elk might be fun for the kids while we hit the town :-) I appreciate your contributions - Thanks!!!

Need Affordible Telluride Lunch & Dinner Spots For Family with Teenagers

We are planning a 3 night summer vacation in Telluride and want to take the boys out for a few dinner and lunches in Telluride without spending their entire college funds! :-0 Any good choices for inexpensive, relatively speaking...maybe Mexican, burgers, pizza, pasta?? My husband and I are going to splurge on a night out for us so one special spot would be nice as well. Thanks for your ideas!!

Best of bad options near Denver Tech Center?

For lunch, I would consider Yia Yia's because of the option to sit outside over the water and the decor is nice for a relaxed business meeting. The food isn't remarkable but the appetizer tower is fun and tasty for a light lunch. They also have some nice salads and a little bit of something for every taste. I have to additionally add that I really find Cool River mediocre at best. If you are going to do a steakhouse, I would vote Shanahan's or Del Frisco over Cool River. Finally, I like McCormick's but I am often in the minority with that view. I enjoy their menu and atmosphere. Finally, Chianti is charming in its own way. The food is well prepared but the place in tiny, located in a strip mall and lacks luster by day. Hope that helps!

Where to get the best green chili in Denver?

I think I have to agree with some of the posters before...my current fav for green chili is Santiago's. It could be more of a thicker, meatier stew consistency but as far as FLAVOR...IT HAS A LOT! I think if you want to make your own---definitely consider picking your own chilis in Pueblo. Many of the farmers will give you a bushel to pick your own.

NEED ALBEQUERQUE DINNER SPOT FOR BUSINESS DINNER w/ 13pp

Okay, in a flurry I booked Scalo as both its location and menu seemed convenient for our group. While it likely will be more $$ than I intended, I'll just have to order lightly to offset the big spenders! :-) Looking forward to it as posters seem to be pleased overall with the food, service and ambiance. Thanks everyone for your help!

Denver - Group Dinner for my Birthday

I'll second your choice of New Saigon - great food!

NEED ALBEQUERQUE DINNER SPOT FOR BUSINESS DINNER w/ 13pp

Dear DebitNM
The dinner is really just a "meet and greet" kind of thing so no audio/ visual aids needed. We could do a private dining room but it is not necessary. My company has me on a tight budget so $20 p.p., excluding alcohol, with tax and tip would be great but if need be I can spend a little more. I want the experience to be as enjoyable for the small group (between 10 and 13) as I can manage. Ambiance is a factor but the restaurant doesn't need to be formal so much as inviting.

fyfas - thanks for the suggestion of Pappadeauxs - I'll keep it in mind!

Denver for Christmas

Where will you be staying? In the downtown area the Brown Palace is always lovely and I know they do a holiday brunch. The hotel is always nicely decorated. However, you would need to talk to them to find out what dinner plans they are offering. http://www.brownpalace.com/dining/

Elway's has a very warm almost clubby atmosphere with a nice selection of meats. They will be open for Christmas http://www.elways.com/downtown
- a little pricey but so is the Brown Palace.

In the suburbs I recommend Opus in the Southwest region (Historic Downtown Littleton). It has wonderful ambiance and excellent food. http://www.opusdine.com
Again pricey.

If you are headed toward the mountains - Golden has a festive spot with a holiday atmosphere - The Briarwood Inn.
http://thebriarwoodinn.com

I haven't dined at the Charthouse in Genesse in a long time but it is open on Christmas and does offer a beautiful view of the city below. http://www.chart-house.com

I haven't given you any budget options but I am sure they exist. I will do some brain storming. If you have any other parameters for your Christmas dinner post them and I am sure others will have some good ideas.

CarneVino?

Very mediocre experience and a very steep price tag given quality. The menu was not terribly inspired and our group tried a wide range of entrees and apps. While nothing was awful, everything was just okay. Service was attentive but very inexperienced and lacking knowledge of the menu, wine, etc. Not what you want from a nice evening out - even if it is work related. There are so many other - better options I would suggest going elsewhere.

NEED ALBEQUERQUE DINNER SPOT FOR BUSINESS DINNER w/ 13pp

Chowhounds! I am from Denver but need ideas for a business dinner I am hosting in ABQ on a Friday evening for 13 people. I want it to be nice however I am also trying to stay under $20.00 p.p. exclusive of alcohol if possible. I am open to all types of cuisine so long as it has a broad appeal. Willing to travel to all areas of ABQ but not too far outside of town. Thanks for your ideas!!!

Need some Denver Recommendations

Ughhhh, sorry to hear about your bad experience. I can not honestly say I remember the bathrooms from my last trip to Mizunas. I would have been concerned if they were dirty as I agree that filthy bathrooms are a real turnoff!!! Makes one concerned about the cleanliness of the kitchen. Hopefully, your experience was isolated and does not happen again!!!***You may want to share your disappointment with Mizuna.

I need a GREAT little Mexican spot in S.W. Denver

El Paraiso - we are addicted!!! We are there whenever possible. :-) Awesome recommendation.

Dive loving Foodie coming to Denver - Need Recs!!

My Brother's Bar is a great spot for a burger and the fact that its the oldest bar in Denver is fun. I'm a little skeptical of the Cherry Cricket's lore. I loved it when I was younger, now I am overwhelmed by the smell of stale beer that permeates the place. IMHO the Crickets burgers just aren't that memorable if you haven't consumed lots of alcohol prior to eating them. I enthusiastically agree with the Sams #3 suggestion - especially for breakfast/brunch. The whole Sams #3 atmosphere, complete with the old time photos of the founders, the delicious and unapologetically grease laden fare screams diner/dive. http://samsno3.com/

I am going to go out on a limb and recommend - Benny's. Benny's famous sloppy burritos are simply classic. There are certainly better, more authentic Mexican cuisine spots in Denver, however Benny's optimizes that beloved diner style smothered in green chili, drowning in cheese, dripping in sour cream and guacamole comfort food. (It is also located close to where you will be staying). http://www.bennysrestaurant.com/index.html Finally, Pete's Satire Lounge is a very late night diner with red naugehide booths and a colorful apres bar hopping crowd. The Satire Lounge might be deserving of some consideration - I haven't eaten there in years but have fond late nite memories! http://www.petesrestaurants.com/satireLounge.html

Lastly, I should mention Bud's bar in Sedalia for its legendary burgers. (It is about a 30 minute drive so you may not be interested in the road trip). It is a complete hole in the wall that serves a double cheese burger that people absolutely go crazy for. No fries - just the burger. Food for thought. :-0

Need some Denver Recommendations

I have to second Mizuna as the best spot for its intimate/romantic atmosphere and its legendary lobster mac&cheese!! Mizuna is possibly a bit out of your local friend's usual stomping grounds since it is not not in Aurora nor is it right downtown.

I also thought Bistro Vendome and Highlands Garden Cafe were nice recommendations if the weather is warm allowing you can dine outdoors. Both those spots have lovely outdoor areas and romantic lighting to compliment their great cuisine. Rioja is fabulous but a bit more busy and less intimate in my mind. Save that spot for another trip. Hope you have a perfect evening.

CarneVino?

Wonderful to hear as we are planning to dine at Carnevino next week! I will be sure to try some of your suggestions - certainly the duck canneloni!

CARNEVINO - Excellent! (Las Vegas)

Wow, so relieved to read your review. A friend made reservations for our party of 8 at Carnevino in a few weeks and I was frankly concerned by all the negative reviews but didn't want to be rude in second guessing my friend. The menu looked intriguing but I was still worried. Your review gives me confidence that the evening will be enjoyable. I love well prepared lamb and would only wish you had had the opportunity to review the pasta! Thank you for taking the time to thoughtfully and carefully review Carnevino and defend Mario's honor. :-)

Need romantic Italian in Vegas (close to Caesar's)

I am also curious about Sinatra - do you have more details?????

Denver Cheap Eats

I absolutely second Marco's Coal fired pizza and mention you may want to check out Stuben's, www.steubens.com which is only a few minutes from Downtown Denver since you enjoy diners and pubs!

where can i buy wine in cancun mexico?

Great - if we run out -- Sam's Club it is!!!

Where to Find Fine Wine in Cancun Restaurants?

Perfect - I have packed one or two bottles (no major mishaps) but maybe this trip I'll load up my kids luggage as well as my husband's and mine for the trip! (We'll need a case I'm sure). I may have to do a search on the liquor safe luggage. That could pay for itself over the years. :-) Thanks for the good advice. I did find this great article on the topic of how to pack wine for air transport and security. http://www.wineloverspage.com/oxford/carryon.phtml

Do you "pack" your wines on the flight? If so - how do you manage it!

So do you then recommend Europa or even Walmart for wine in Playa?

Wine shopping in Mexico City

Hi Wineman1 - While this thread is devoted to mexico City -- I wanted to ask you to recommend a spot in Playa del Carmen to purchase wine. Additionally, what do you recommend we purchase locally in a bold Cabernet and an oaky Chardonnay. Are there any special wine merchants or wine shops that you would recommend in the vicinity? Thanks!

Good Liquor Store in Cherry Creek area of Denver

I have a suggestion that is close enough to Cherry Creek to be reasonable and offers a great delivery service - don't miss Mondo Vino!!! When ever we have an event (or if we are down that way) we like to use Mondo Vino as they offer great wines at very competitive price! Check it out ---www.mondovino.net

I need a GREAT little Mexican spot in S.W. Denver

Sad but true - many love a chain experience i.e. homogenized cuisine guaranteed to be replicated with uninspired results across the country and beyond. However, our family truly appreciates local, original, fresh and creative cuisine! We all have a particularly strong weakness for good Mexican fare!!! Thanks again Chow Hounds for identifying great spots in the area! **I have to confess that once in a while I do stop off at Chipolte's, Noodles or the our own local chain the Tamale Kitchen -- busted!!!
