Sliceria, Sunset Park
My husband and I decided to order from Sliceria last night after reading a mention of it on Serious Eats. THe website was malfunctioning a little bit (I think) since I was told on the phone that delivery to my street (42nd) was fine but on the site, it said "can't deliver to that address". This was a minor inconvenience since I'd wanted to pay with plastic, which the guy on the phone said was only possible online. No matter, I ordered over the phone; half-sausage large pie!
It arrived pretty promptly and hot and the delivery kid was nice - plus, I don't think they charged us for the half-sausage since our pie was $10!
I was pretty impressed with my first bite - nice balance between sauce and cheese, a little browned but not at all dry, crust was a good balance of crusty and a little chewy. My one complaint on taste - and my husband agreed - was that the sauce was really rather sweet! It was sort of odd to notice it after one slice, but there was definitely a sweetness that detracted from the pie.
Another thing: although the reviews said neapolitan it really was a lot more like NY street slice than anything else. However, you could definitely tell they were more superior ingredients - the cheese actually tasted like cheese - than some of the crappy pizza places that unfortunately you find in Sunset Park.
Altogether I'd say it was a solid 7 out of 10 for decent, polite delivery, good prices, and decent ingredients. Plus, I'm pleased to see new businesses open in Sunset Park with enthusiasm. Not sure I'll switch from Johnny's but I'll definitely try it again in a few months to see if they've improved their formula as they go!
Breaded red snapper - any suggestions?
Thanks so much, both of you! I'll definitely try some of these ideas.
Breaded red snapper - any suggestions?
I've been a terribly picky eater all my life - seafood particularly is my downfall - and it makes me crazy, so this year I've gone on a try-everything binge to force myself to try new things and find ones I like.
And wouldn't you know it, at Iberico in Chicago this weekend I tried this amazing lightly breaded red snapper that absolutely floored me - it was delicious! So now, fish novice that I am, I'm on a quest to try it again. Anyone have any places they particularly like for red snapper, breaded or otherwise? I'm not quite ready to start cooking it at home - I want to taste around first!
Family Dumpling in Sunset Park?
Hey guys - there have been some threads that mention this place, in Sunset Park, somewhere in the 40's around 8th Ave, called Family Dumpling, but I can't seem to get a nail on exactly WHERE it is. Can anyone help me out?
And if you like the place, recommend which dumplings are stellar? Or, if there's somewhere else that you think trumps Family Dumpling, let me know? I'm on a mission!
Thanks!
Birthday party for 20 in Greenpoint/LIC area
I need to recommend La Vuelta in Long Island City - they were SO incredibly accomodating to my birthday party of 24! People! I swear, they even let me bring in my own cake and cut/candled it without charging, they brought all the food out at the same time, they served us drinks inside and outside and put it all on one tab, they brought us pitcher after pitcher of sangria, and the whole shebang came to about $40 a head. It was amazing.
I'd recommend them to everyone, OH, and the food was lovely, too!
8th Ave Sunset Park - dumplings tonight, help!
Hey Sunset Parkers and general dumpling fans -
My husband and I are going to our coop board interview tonight (!!!) in Sunset Park on 8th in the 40's, and I'd really like to grab some quick food before then. Although I'm dying to try Ba Xuyen, we won't be in the neighborhood until 7pm so it'll be closed.
I'm hearing all these mentions of different dumpling places in the 40's - Northern China Dumplings, Family Dumplings, Rai Feng Du ... so which one should we hit? We only have about 45 minutes before the interview, so, we need to stay in the 40's.
Where would you send us?
New to Sunset Park and looking for wine!
After five glorious years in Astoria, my husband and I are moving to Sunset Park, around 8th Ave. and 42nd St. I've been trawling the boards for great restaurant ideas but what I need to know (and have a sinking feeling about) is this:
Where do I get wine?
I love wine. I love great wine stores, which we have a couple of here in Astoria. But when I search nearby our new place on Google Maps for wine, everything is about twenty blocks away. "Liquor" brings up some places but I'm concerned that those aren't really wine-heavy in their retail. Do any Sunset Parkers have any suggestions or locations they go to when they want a decent selection?
Also, anyone who uses that C-Town on 8th, how do you find it, as a store?
Glad to know anything you can offer us, as newcomers!
Pizza in Astoria
I've had similar problems with Rizzo's on weekend nights - do they just stay open until the run out of pizza? Because of this, I've never tried them.
I have to quietly second ONE poster here that said Pinnochio's on 30th ave was surprisingly decent for italian-style pizza, not your typical NYC slice. I mean, okay, it's not Nick's or Grimaldi's, but I can't get Nick's or Grimaldi's to deliver, so on a weeknight when I want something with fresh mozzarella, I gotta tell you, Pinnochio's surprised me.
dinner with picky mom - HELP!
the $30 is really more like a guideline, and I mean pre-tax/tip, and don't worry - we're NOT three-course eaters in my family; usually two tops.
I'll certainly check out all those ideas!
dinner with picky mom - HELP!
Hey everyone - my wonderful, amazing mother is coming to town tomorrow night with a friend, and I've always taken her to ViceVersa on 51st street because they have simple, well-prepared Italian food and most importantly, impeccable service.
But with 24 hours notice, she's decided she wants to try someplace new! HELP! Here are my criteria:
Ambiance: Someplace simple and elegant - not too loud or cramped
Menu: Not too exotic a menu (European, essentially, or Latin) and a lot of variety in choice (she's VERY picky)
Price: About $30 a head (she or her friend don't drink and my husband and I will only have a glass of wine each)
Most Important: Good service - my mother, god bless her, is so meticulous about this and good, respectful service really wows her but bad service really gets her goat
I know this is a lot of criteria and I'm sure there aren't many places out there like this, but I have total faith in your chowhounders and your passion about restaurants! If you can throw a few suggestions my way, I'd have a world of gratitude for you.
Gloucester ideas for non-seafoodie!
I know, this is going to induce a lot of well-meaning groans, but I'm spending this Saturday in Gloucester, MA, to take a whale-watching tour and although I wish I adored seafood, I sadly don't - so I was hoping you had some ideas for restaurants that would serve good stuff for BOTH me and my seafood-loving husband.
Something well-priced that would be able to serve a late lunch/early dinner (we'll be getting off the boat around 5), that's reasonably priced and centrally located - any ideas?
Thanks!
Can I find Rotel in New York?
I've been away from Texas for six years and one of the few things I really miss is some damn good queso - takes me right back to Magnolia's in Austin. Back in Texas, I used to make queso at home with some velveeta, rotel, and spices. Now, I know this is Chowhound and velveeta might get some attitude, but if you're a Texan, you know what I mean.
The thing is, I've never found any Rotel (for those of you wondering what it is, it's just tomatoes and green chilis, canned, and it's a TX institution) at grocery stores. Any other Texan transplants around here know what I mean and where to find it?
And yes - I've made queso from scratch before, but there's something missing and I suspect it's Rotel.
Farewell dinner for friend/colleague in Astoria
I love Agnanti, on Ditmars, for Greek. But I'm not sure how amenable they are to reservations. My father is Greek so when we call ahead when he's in town, he gets all chatty and informally reserves us a table. They might be willing to reserve a big table, though, for a big party.
In any case, you should definitely try them. The food is outstanding and there's a lot of selection, plus they're really nice and welcoming.
wine in Astoria
I'm interested in everyone saying Grand is a great store. Their selection is extensive but I've never found an excess of information available to me about the wines. Rarely does anyone come up to me and ask me what I'm looking for and if I need help picking - they don't even seem approachable.
People that really like it there - what's been your experience about that? Has the staff seemed really knowledgeable? Have you had to approach them for help yourself? Do they seem passionate about wine?
Butcher Bros?
I had a decent NY Strip there but it really wasn't anything to shout home about, and especially not for $26 bucks.
I have my suspicions about Butcher Bros. and Amici Amore - how do they stay open?
Coffee shops in Astoria
I've lived in marvelous wonderful Astoria for 4 years now - off Newtown Ave. I've found (and often thanks to help from the boards here) some of the best restaurants in the city here. But there's still one thing missing from my roster, and now that I'm going to be freelancing from home, is becoming crucial:
Anyone know any good coffee shops in the Astoria/LIC area? I'm excluding, for my purposes, either the sprawling eurocafes of Broadway and 30th ave, or Starbuckses. Which leaves me with: Freezepeach. Which I love! But I was wondering if there were more. Someplace with character and tranquility, good teas and coffees and maybe even a couch or two. Something like the Tea Lounge in Park Slope.
Anyone?
disappointing meal at Stamatis! where's the real Greek food in Astoria?
I don't necessarily agree about Opa Opa, and I live right around the corner. It's okay for typical souvlaki type fare, but it's nothing exciting or delightful.
Agnanti is, for me, the best Greek in Astoria - and I'm Greek. My first visit there, I'd already been living in Astoria for 4 years and despaired of ever getting good Greek. It was packed with Greeks on a Saturday night which is a pretty good bet.
All the dishes I've had are good, but the saganaki and the pastistio are to DIE for.
