Best Indian in Jackson Heights?

Al Naimat may not have had the best buffet but they were very dependable. They were my comfort food place. I was really bummed to see the buffet gone.

Going to wander in Jackson Heights and sample different Indian dishes / snacks. Suggestions?

Has anyone been to Nanking Express on 37th Ave? It specializes in those Indian versions of Chinese dishes (Which I love). It's a little pricey for the neighborhood, so I wanted to get some feedback before I tried it.

Also, has anyone tried any of the three (!) taco trucks right outside the Roosevelt Ave subway stop under the subway tracks?

Rockaways or Howard Beach

I ate at Rockaway Taco today and it was decent but not great. The tortillas were a sort of hard and dried out, the fillings were good to middling. The fish taco was the best one, carne asada and chorizo were mediocre. The elote (corn on the cob with cheese and lime) was also somehow lacking. I think this place has the right idea, but the execution is not quite there. It's very charming and worth going to if you're in the area, but I wouldn't make a special trip to eat here.

Egg Cream Round-up

My favorite is the Gem Spa. Eisenbergs was ok, but not great.

Does anyone know if she's there after 6pm during the week?

Top 5 Most Overrated in Manhattan

I beg to differ about Five Guys. Their burgers are only above average but their fries are fantastic. Then again I like White Castle, so what do I know?

East 50's Indian lunch

I like the Agra. It's not in the 50's but close on Lex between 62nd and 63rd upstairs. They have a good lunch special.

Indian Buffet DINNER?

Al Naimat. Ok, it's in Jackson Heights, but this place is my all time favorite Indian/Pakistani buffet. 8 bucks and that includes desert.

Downtown Taco Truck?

There's a taco truck near the West 4th St subway stop on 6th Ave sometimes. I've been there once and wasn't that impressed with it. The one on 14th Street and 8th Ave after 8pm is better. I guess this doesn't help you if you're in Battery Park, sorry!

News on Trader Joe's on UWS?

An employee at the Brooklyn TJ's told me it's just a rumor. Thank god for the Brooklyn location by the way. It's so much better than the 14th St one.

Metropolitan A.M.E Church - Soul Food

Back in 2000 I went to the cafeteria in the basement of this church and had incredible soul food. It was very cheap, the portions were huge and the church ladies were really nice. Since I'm rarely in Harlem I haven't been back since. Does anyone know whether the cafeteria still exists?

Place to buy kegs of beer?

New Beer Distributors only sells kegs to bars and American has a pretty lame selection. I don't understand why American doesn't sell kegs of Six Point beers considering they have them in the store to fill growlers.

Cheap near 64th and CPW

Hi. I'm going to see John Waters at the Society for Ethical Culture on 64th and Central Park West. Can anyone recommend a place that's fairly cheap in that area? I'm pushing for Wondee Siam but if anyone knows anything closer I'd appreciate it.

Tamales in Murray Hill -quick report

Thanks for the tip! The best tamales I've had in NYC have always come from street vendors. There used to be a women on 8th Avenue and 40th Street that I would get them from but she's long gone. I've had them from the taco wagon on 14th Street and 8th Ave (after 8pm) but they weren't quite as good as others I've had.

Best Jamaican Beef Patties (areas or restaurants)?

I second Christies. The beef patties are incredibly tasty and have just the right amount of heat.

Best Mariscada on the Isle of Manhattan?

I like the Mariscada they serve at the Sophie's Cuban chain. They only make it on certain days of the week, so check first. Cabana Carioca closed? What a bummer!

DiFara (Review)

I was there yesterday six hours before you at noon. My girlfriend and I were thinking we could beat the crowd by going right at opening time on a weekday. There was already a large group of tourists from Boston waiting. Someone said that Dom wouldn't be there until 12:30 at the earliest. We were too hungry to wait, so we bailed. When do people think the best time to go is? I think I'm going to try 3pm next time.

stuffed cabbage

Ukrainian National Home and Theresa's both have good stuffed cabbage but the best I've ever had was from a street vendor at the annual Ukrainian street festival in the East Village. I think it's in May. I'm going to try to go this year.

best street tamale

I used to buy tamales from a woman on 39th and 8th but that was years ago. I still look for her if I'm ever in that area but I haven't seen her. The best tamale I had recently was from the taco truck on 14th Street and 8th ave. It's there after 8pm most nights.

Alternatives to Starbucks?

Porto Rico, on Bleecker just east of 6th Ave, is primarily a coffee store but you can also get cups of coffee to go in the back.

The Gem Spa and the Eisenberg Sandwich Shop are my current favorite places for egg creams. I remember the 2nd Ave Deli making a pretty good one too.

A good Indian restaurant in Brooklyn?

I haven't been there in a long time, but I thought Curry Leaf on Remsen Street in Brooklyn Heights was pretty good. Has anyone been there recently?

Sucelt - closed

Man, that's sad. I never went there that often but I had a really good arepa from Sucelt last summer. I didn't go to 14th Street much growing up, but I've heard that there used to be lots of great Latin American restaurants there. They're mostly gone now, although I think one of the last downtown Cuban/Chinese joints is still hanging on.

Marinella, on Carmine and Bedford has decently priced Italian food in a very nice quiet setting.

That's sad. I think the fire that gutted the store a few years back really took its toll on that guy.

Old-School, Italian Red Sauce Restaurant

I like John's. If you go on Sunday, get the "Sunday Gravy". It's a bunch of assorted meat and sausages in a ragu. I also like the Trattoria Spaghetto on the corner of Bleecker and Carmine and Monte's on MacDougal. Carmine's down by the Southstreet Seaport is pretty good too.

The Trini-Pak cart on 43rd and 6th, right next to the International Center of Photography. Awesome curry chicken over rice.

If you're in downtown Manhattan try Hercules Fancy Grocery on 7th Ave. This place sells nothing but beer.

DUMBO Indian

I've eaten there a bunch of times because I live nearby and the local options are limited. I also love Indian food and am willing to eat it even it's mediocre. This place is pretty inconsistent. I had a dish that was stir fried potatoes in a dry curry that was pretty good. Meats tend to be sketchy. The dals are generally alright. They used to have samosas and pakoras that were good but I haven't seen them lately. Definitely worth a try if you live or work in the area.
