Where to buy the best fresh pasta?

The walnut pesto is excellent. I was once in the store while they were conducting a neighborhood tour. They served a sample of the walnut pest over their pumpkin ravioli. It was so delicious I nearly CRIED!

Top Chef - D.C. - Ep. #5 - 07/14/10 (Spoilers)

Oh my....guest judge Patrick O'Connell does reminds me of.....Carol Channing

is there mushroom season in NYC?

Buon Italia, located in the Chelsea Market, carries a good selection of very reasonably priced mushrooms.

Need Restaurant for tonight- Red Sauce Italian, Dressy

For your key requirements - fresh pasta, good red sauce and great bread -- Campanile would be perfect.

Top Chef Las Vegas Ep. 6 - 09/23/09 (Spoilers)

I'm bored (even tho they're cute). I'm not denying their talent, just saying they're dull as freakin dishwater.
_________________________

Season 4 winner Stephanie was dull as dishwater. So was the undeserving Season 5 winner, Hosea. Personality does not (or should not) matter on TC as it is (or should be) all about the food. There is a Food Network channel for those seeking personalities.

Affordable, fresh spices - where do you shop?

I normally shop for spices at Kalustyan's, on Lexington Avenue between 28-29th Streets, because it's in my neighborhood and their selection is unsurpassed, although not necessarily affordable.

For affordability and volume, I recommend the bulk spice market located on the west side of 9th Avenue between 40-41 Streets, near Sea Breeze Fish Market (sorry, but I can't seem to remember its name).

Update: International Grocery, 543 9th Avenue - between 40th and 41st.

Where to buy slider buns in the Upper East Side

Try Morton Williams on 1565 First Avenue @ 81st Street. They carry Martin's potato slider buns.

Top Chef Las Vegas Ep. 6 - 09/23/09 (Spoilers)

Oh...I do like that!

Top Chef Las Vegas Ep. 6 - 09/23/09 (Spoilers)

And Tom Colicchio remarked several weeks ago that Hung's sous vide duck remains one of the best TC dishes ever.

Top Chef Las Vegas Ep. 6 - 09/23/09 (Spoilers)

I don't believe Ash was attempting mashed potatoes, but a desconstruction of traditional mashed potatoes by way of a puree. I'm not a chef, but I know that such a puree can be prepared, without gummy or gluey effect, in a blender.

Top Chef Las Vegas Ep. 6 - 09/23/09 (Spoilers)

I'm very surprised by Ash's performance in this episode. I eat fairly regularly at his restaurant in NY, which specializes in French-leaning cuisine. I find it hard to believe that he'd attempt a duo of custards for a quickfire. Also, that he was unable to produce a simple potato/parsnip puree (I assume he overdid the preparation in a food processor). Based on the above, I assumed that he would be sent home.

Babbo pasta question

do you think they really use spaghettini which is very thin like cappellini rather than spaghetti.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, they really use spaghettini, as it is so identified on the menu

Where Can I Buy Pork Belly?

Since you are staying in the Chelsea area, you need go no further than Western Beef,
which is located at 431 W 16th St. (between 9th & 10th Avenues)

Top Chef Masters Finale 08/19/09 (spoilers)

I saw that spoiler also, but not on CH. Also, the editors deserve a kick for inadvertently revealing the winner. In the promo for the finale Kelly Choi announces, "you are the top chef" while looking directly at the finalist located on the far right. Of course, during judges table and the final announcement, Rick Bayless was standing on the far right.

Family Dinner @ Prune, Bar Stuzzichini, Landmarc, Pastis or ?

Of the choices you mention, Bar Stuzzichini would be the most appropriate for a "family dinner" There are lots of delicious options for food, the atmosphere is casual, and it would most easily accomodate a 15-month old.

I finally went to Shake Shack.....

No fan of the Shake Shack burger here. After four strikes, they're out. Although tasty, they're notoriously stingy with condiments (more than once I've received a slice of lettuce the size of a basil leaf) and I've requested additional items that were missing altogether. Not worth it...even without the wait. For a great burger, I swear by SS's sister restaurant, Blue Smoke.

best dishes with BACON in manhattan?

Degustation also serves a stunning pork belly dish.

Salumeria Rosi serves a pork belly dish that is an absolute KNOCKOUT!

Top Chef Masters Semi-Final 3rd Round (spoilers)

No, you're not overthinking. This is exactly the conclusion that the editors
want to convey. And I agree with you that Bayless will most likely win.

salumeria rosi

I went with my SO and shared the salumi tasting platter and 4 plates, which was sufficient and allowed room for dessert. If you'll be dining with 3 persons with healthy appetites and plan to share, I would consider ordering 10-12 plates.

Must Haves:

Pork Belly (this was STUNNING and one of the best p-b preparations I've had in ages)
Sette Fagioli (Seven Bean Salad)
Lasagne Bolognese
Salumi Tasting

Also Recommended:

Marinated Anchovy Salad (for anchovy lovers only)
Asparagus Salad
Prosciutto croquettes (can't remember the exact name)

Avoid:

Bread Pudding
Fig Mousse (can't remember the exact name or its preparation)

Moving to a new hood 28th street East Side. Food/Grocery/Restaurant Recs?

Sorry, but Pizza 33 is abominable. It's better to travel the extra mile for a slice at Artichoke.

Balthazar-ish bistro?

To be fair, the 3 or 4 times I've been to Pastis have been during lunch, cold weather or off-hours, so I did find it to be less of a madhouse than Balthazar. But I also agree with the above recommendations of Artisinal, which is in my nabe and I've visited often.

Top Chef Masters Champs 1st Round [spoilers]

Sorry to chime in here.....I really do like Ina, but I hate it when she says:

"I'm making [this] for Jeffrey"
"I'm making [that] for Jeffrey"

Jeffrey, Jeffrey, Jeffrey!

Balthazar-ish bistro?

Don't forget Balthazar's sister restaurant, Pastis.

Top Chef Masters Champs 1st Round [spoilers]

LindaWhit :

You're right, Reilly was the upper-left square and Paul Lynde was center. Thanks for remembering my youth (and today's nostalgia) by showing your age....and MINE!

Top Chef Masters Champs 1st Round [spoilers]

That's funny. Oseland reminds me of Charles Nelson Reilly, center square of the Hollywood Squares.

Top Chef Masters Champs 1st Round [spoilers]

Please, eliminate him soon and put us out of our misery so that we can enjoy seeing some truly talented chefs ply their art.
