Where to eat Labor Day early evening in Santa Monica, Venice, etc.

Salt Air had a lovely bouillabaisse a few months back. Their dinner menu probably changes often but there doesn't appear to be anything fried on it.

Looking for ideas for a Sunday Supper for 30

When I had to serve a crowd, I used two large round loaves. Muffuletta fillings for the first; a turkey, Brie with vegs for the second. They sliced easily and neatly. They were a big hit.

Any good new(ish) restuarants in and around the San Fernando Valley that are a must try?

My son & I enjoyed the food & shake at Tipsy Cow. Nice beer selection too.

Instead of a hot sandwich, try a large pressed sandwich.made with different cheeses and meats, a relish and some roasted vegetables, all made ahead. Wrapped tightly and weighted down in the fridge overnight, it takes small slices to feed a lot of people.

Looking for ideas for a Sunday Supper for 30

I remember doing a large party for my toddlers that included lots of parents, pls out of own relatives. We grilled sausage and veggie kabobs. Separate skewers of chicken apple & cheese sausages and mixed marinated cubed vegetables like zucchini, peppers, onions, mushrooms. I also served a couple of large green salads, sliced breads. I'm sure there was more food, I'm not remembering all of it. We carted the meal up to a local playground so it kept well and was still delicious at room temp. I'm sure you could find more inspiration from just grilling up some of the farmers markets treasures to add to the menu.

Home Cooking Dish of the Month (September 2014) Nominations

I like the idea of STIR FRY as well. Kids getting back to school and all, nice to have an arsenal of speedy weekday dinners.

paella: fish sauce

You don't want to use an equal amount of fish sauce to sub chicken stock.... It is waaaaaay too strong and pungent, it will ruin your dish. Make a fish stock or just use water. With maybe a tbsp or two of fish sauce, but it may take the paella to a strange place...

Lamb - Can you Cook, Leave it, And Finish with a Sear?

OP says he/she was going to bake them slow & low.... I agree with mcsheridan that congealed lamb fat is unpleasant. I think I would just leave them in a very low oven then bump up the heat for the sear at the last minute.... At four oz each they are pretty good size and probably should be the last thing cooked.

Guidance needed for week-long LA visit

Perhaps the kitchen is becoming lackadaisical.... Happens at lots of places where the food was originally phenomenal, then starts to slide downhill as the chef focuses on other things....Lucques, I'm looking at you!

Mexican near Bergamot: Juquila, Tacomiendo or Monte Alban?

I've not made it to either of those! Where's Sanchez again?
