L.A. Dish of the Month, August 2014: COCKTAILS and Bar Food

Just had to celebrate my birthday with my namesake cocktail..... No bar food just real food for dinner at Mastro's Ocean Cub. Excellent martini.

"Mother-in-law" restaurant in the Valley

We've been to Tipsy Cow twice. It's mainly just burgers and shakes. But they are delicious. Kids would enjoy the shakes and you can order sliders for them if they are not big eaters..... Full bar. Small but cool decor and lively. I think they are open all day.... Or maybe they start at five, sorry, not looking at the link. On Ventura east of Sepulveda.

Quiche: Anything Close To Amandine?

If you ever find yourself in my 'hood, you may want to try Maison Giraud's version. Classic quiche Lorraine usually, but he may switch it up sometimes. Very creamy, rich and delicious with a very flaky wonderful crust. Can't remember what he charges but it does come with a fresh green salad.

They look great. Did you ever have Hummel's back in NE? Those were the ones I grew up on....like German bologna, mildly spiced and almost creamy inside. Yum.

Can't tell you what's in the drink, but at my local sushi bar, they used to have saketinis, but now they cannot get the Japanese mountain peach liqueur anymore to make them, so they took it off the menu :( Bartender asked what I like and I told him I like Tito's. It was very good, a little fruity, and I asked him what was in it and he said "a whole lotta love". Okay! I'm sold! Anyway, pic of the ahi tartar that I always get there that is killer. Pearl Dragon, on Sunset.

Yea, it's a killer spot. Very comfortable with lots of places to sit in groups. Couple of bars. Lots of rooms and little alcoves.

Mexican near Bergamot: Juquila, Tacomiendo or Monte Alban?

I'm so jealous, because I tried to go there today for lunch to try these, and didn't end up going because the meters were all full, and I had other things o do in SaMo before school dismissal...... And I still have the salsa Roja itch to scratch...... May have to try again tomorrow if I can't get it out of my head tonight.

First Dunkin' Donuts Lands in Santa Monica

I drove by today , Kev, at around 2:30 and the line snaked around the corner....

LA "Musts" Tailored to a Strategic New Yorker

Nice report! Don't worry you did the right thing by skipping the ooey gooey fries because you would be still dreaming about them....and ordering the chubby pork belly bowl, it is outstanding and a mishmash that really works well.

Lychee gimlet at the Bungalow in Santa Monica last night, along with some killer guac, chips and mushroom & poblano quesadillas that were delicious. Under the quesadilla was more guac & some mixed spicy pickles like jalapeƱo & carrots, topped generously with crumbled cotija. No pic of the food, but here's our cocktails. Very cool place.

Humble Potato: The Day After (Japanese-Inspired Hamburgers)

I'm not down in that area often, but when my kids & hubby picked me up from LAX in June, I took them there... They all loved it, my kids thought it was super cool decor.

Simon's Cafe in Sherman Oaks, a true find

Sorry I couldn't make it, I had a school obligation that would not have gotten me out and back to school in time for dismissal.

I am still up to try them for lunch, but since they are only open one day of seven for lunch, life can get in the way sometimes, especially with kids......

Maybe I'll just have to go by myself and report back then , whenever that will be.

Belcampo hotdog
