Ladies Meet and Greet.

A group of us are looking to get together for dinner on a Tuesday night in Feb. to discuss all things political. We need a place that is moderately priced, casual dress and if at all possible has a private or separate room for meeting for free. Centrally located would be a big plus. 20-25 people possibly.

Does anyone know what is going in next to the Arby's on Ohlen/183. It's where the IHOP used to be.

RIP VI

We went over there a few times. My daughter liked the bbq trailer that was there for a while. The last time we went they were only serving chopped sandwiches. I didn't like Snarky's at all.

We like Popeye's but the one on N. Lamar has horrible service and they really need to spend some time training their employees. I don't care for Church's and haven't ever been in the one on Fairfield/183.

Another lost La Fogata thread

I saw a trailer in the parking lot there the other day. Didn't really pay attention to it. I was walking over to La Famillia. I think I'm in there at least 2x a week for the last 3 years and haven't ever had the tacos from Tierra Linda. When we first started going in there we would get very odd looks from the cashiers at the shell.

I think they were talking about El Pollo Regio here in Austin. If you look on the website it only shows a couple of locations. I live very close to the Arby's and El Pollo Regio at Ohlen Road. My grand children love the chicken there.

I noticed the little Cuban place next door to Twin Liquors at Jamestown/183 has a for lease sign in the window.

We get chicken from the one on Ohlen about once a month.

Where to buy "real" lard?

Almost all lard you find at the grocery store has been hydrogenated. You need to look for it in the refrigerated sections to find real lard. You could render it yourself.
How to render lard. http://homesicktexan.blogspot.com/200...

Don't care for Snarkys moo bawk oink. We like JohnnyT's BBQ. You must get the green beans. I have been waiting for a chilly day to try the gumbo at Louisiana Wild.

Stiles Switch BBQ

Finally tried this place today. We ordered some stuff to go. Brisket, Sausage, Chicken. Mac and cheese and pinto beans.
It was good, not great. I thought the sausage links were a bit over cooked but the guys liked them. The brisket was very good, nice and moist. The chicken was ok, it lacked flavor. The sauce was awful. Thin and runny, it just didn't taste good. I had bbq sauce in the fridge so I used that instead. The pinto beans were very bland. The mac and cheese was probably the best thing we got..

Will we go back ? Maybe, Rudy's is still better.

Birthday Dinner Ideas.

Sorry I haven't been back until now. We all hate Mr. Gattis. Bartlett's sounds good but think I might save that one for my birthday in Sept.
So far the list of possible places includes: Mandolas, Carraabas, Homeslice, Red's Porch and a couple others he has mentioned that I don't remember right now.

Birthday Dinner Ideas.

My son turns 18 in a couple of weeks and we want to take him out for a good dinner. I'm having trouble thinking of someplace to take him.

Has to be someplace laid back, not fancy or fussy. Preferably north Austin. He likes most everything with pizza, chicken, and shrimp being favorites.

Farmers Garden Pickles

That is the store I shop at the most. They have them there on the row with the other pickles.

Favorite takes at Savory Spice Shop ??

Made a trip out Savory Spice Shop. Love the store. The staff is very helpful. We bought:
a half ounce of the Smoked Spanish Paprika, Hot
and 1oz. each
Renaissance Gardens Seasoning- we did not enjoy this made into a dip. Will try it on some fish next.
Native Texan BBQ Rub
Red Rocks Hickory Smoke Seasoning
Tandoori Seasoning.
Paprika, Smoked Spanish, Sweet

For comparison,I ordered some Smoked Paprika from my usual place.http://www.worldspice.com/ The paprika from there has a darker color and a smokier aroma.

Overall Savory Spice Shop is a winner in my book.

The grand daughter and I saw these at the store last weekend. We should have bought some but didn't. Will pick some up this weekend. I really want to try the bread and butter ones.

Favorite takes at Savory Spice Shop ??

I will definitely give this place a try. I have been looking for a good smoked Paprika ever since moving back to Austin. The closest I have found was at Fiesta.

Do they make these blends in store. I am looking for a good spice shop and haven't found one locally so I still order from the one in Seattle.

My favorite things from HEB

They are sold in a can. My son thinks they are too sweet and that they need bacon.
