Bean Counter's Profile

Solvang, Santa Ynez, Los Olivos Wine Recommendations

I see a lot of recommendations for Paula's and my grandfather, a local, is a fan. That being said the one time I've been I wasn't super impressed - I imagine I'm getting the wrong thing - what's he right thing?

Best Recipes you have ever found on Chowhound Home Cooking board

This is a blast from the past and I doubt I'll be able to find it but Sir Gawain's cake. Honestly been meaning to try it for years but there was a great deal of discussion and love for it.

New thread for discontinued products

Stouffer's noodles romanoff - classic side dish of meals with my dad(a bachelor). Also some weird Mac & cheese that was made like a cup of soup with boiling water. Chunky(the soup brand) chili. Ahh childhood. I actually loved the canned tamales as a kid then had them much later and was pretty disgusted by them - not sure if they or I changed or both :).

Cherry season again and thinking of getting a pitter...

There is an OXO one which has a little plastic doodad that prevents a lot of juice spray. My 17 y.o. son just used it to pit about a pound of cherries in very short order. He wanted to freeze them which wasn't exactly my plan but if he's going to eat them he gets some leeway. I think I got mine at Bed,Bath and Beyond but it was a few years ago.

What cookbooks have you bought lately? Springtime edition, part 2

I found that book (the Flo Braker) at TJ Maxx recently - definitely not 6 bucks but affordable nevertheless. Have yet to cook from it but was just thinking about pulling off the shelf. If you have any other recipes you like I'd love to hear.

What are you baking these days? May 2012

I've made some good ones from there as well. In particular the lemon madelines. Assuming the gingerbread chocolate ones are the same ones that appeared in the magazine ages ago my sister swears by them as well.

Help with Polenta

I use bob's red mill polenta and Martha Stewart's oven method for cooking it easy!

Paleo diet - any experience?

Will definitely be checking this out...

Paleo diet - any experience?

Yikes - I'm not a big drinker at all but I work at a brewery so a few times a month I have one or two. Yes, I am capable of socializing without drinking so sparkling water I guess will be bigger in my future ;)

Paleo diet - any experience?

Thanks guys these are all super helpful replies / the idea of biting off one chunk at a time is good. I'm actually in the process of reading the primal blueprint so those comments are helpful. I guess what sounds hard to me particularly is rice, pasta, and sugar. Buy really the whole idea is scary to me. In my family I'm the one who gets questions about food, ingredients , etc so it feels a little like changing my persona. Yes, I know that sounds silly - I'll just learn new recipes/methods etc. still open to any and all suggestions. I'm already pretty big on the grass fed, local meats, poultry eggs so at least part of the work is done(for lack of a better word). Thanks again!

Paleo diet - any experience?

I'm reading a book on the benefits but haven't taken the plunge. I'm having a hard time seeing how I can make some of those changes. Obviously eating more plants is a no brainer but like everyone food is an important part of my life and my famiy's. Is anyone doing this diet and do you have any tips about getting over that initial hump?

What cookbooks have you bought lately? Springtime edition! [old]

I should probably stop reading this thread as I seem to be developing a bit of a problem:) bought homesick texan, cook this now, a bean cookbook, and a deborah Madison cookbook recently. Also in my cart was the primal blueprint but considering where my devotion clearly lies I don't think that type of diet is going to work for me.;) plus I might not find time to read I with the others

Cheese ravioli

I plan to try my hand at making cheese ravioli tomorrow. I plan to use Mario's dough recipe and could probably come up with the filling but just wondering if anyone has a recipe they particularly like. Also any tips on cleaning a pasta machine that would be great. I have a second hand one and would like to feel like I'm starting with it clean. Thanks!

SLO Sat FM - treats that will travel?

Well this isn't really too late as I'll be back down this summer so I appreciate the post and your always sound advice. On my own I ended up with an apricot biscuit( I think they called it) and a orange shortbread cookie from the neon carrot. Also some mandarins from the Cal Poly stand, some strawberries( chose badly on this even though I tried one) , some sugar snap peas(not at our FM yet ), and some shallots. Was tempted by plants but obviously makes a lot more sense to get them where I live. I wanted to check out the strawberry stand on Los Osos V rd across the freeway from our hotel but missed it. I'll try to post earlier on my next trip.

What cookbooks have you bought lately? Springtime edition! [old]

Just picked up Flo Braker's Baking for All Occaisions. I've liked what I've seen so far but don't think I have anywhere near enough baking pans of various sizes. Found it at TJ Maxx so only about 8 bucks. May try the blueberry muffins for a coworkers bday this week.

What to do with beets & beet greens????

As for the beet greens Alton brown has a recipe in the food network site for a gratin that sounds tasty. Another way to use the beets besides the roasting treatment is to grate them raw for a salad - a little messy but yum! As others have said - I'm jealous :) I'd love to hear about any creative ideas you try

Last Post or Date Started?

Somehow I've changed mine to date started and can't figure out how to change it back - maybe I just can't from my phone. Anyway I really don't care for it - I want a thread like WFD to be at the top.

SLO Sat FM - treats that will travel?

I buried this question in another thread and thought I'd give it it's due. Anyway I'm visiting SLO Tom Chico through Sunday and an looking forward to visiting the Sat FM. I love them and will be missing my weekly home one. Anyway does anyone have any favorites that will trave well? There is a fridge in my hotel but I foolishly did not bring a cooler and don't plan to buy one. Thanks!!!

Casual/yummy SLO Thursday dinner

Thanks for the replies all - wish I had been more on top of it to post earlier - we ended up going to del's which was pretty much exactly what I expected but the perfect amount of driving and downtown avoidance. You'd think a teenager would be down with the farmers market and I would have been but was met with resistance. :). We have been in the summer and both of us find it justa little too crowded for our personalities - maybe this time of year would be a better bet? We are staying at the courtyard of Los osos so et voila sounds convenient. I am looking forward to checking out the Saturday fm so if anyone has any prepared food gems let me know. We're from chico and our fm is Saturday so I want to get my fix :)

Casual/yummy SLO Thursday dinner

Looking for an easy dinner after being in the car most of the day - any ideas? With a 17 y.o. - he's read about the side car on here and thinks that sounds good - I think that sounds like way more energy/time/money than I want to deal with right now

Accidentally bought a cherry chip cake mix. What can I do with it?

Wow, I haven't seen those in years and it used to be my sisters go to bday cake since she doesn't like chocolate - where did you accidentally buy it ?

April Religious Holidays 2013 - What's on the Menu?

That sounds heavenly. I dream of lamb for Easter but I'd have to do just chops for me since I'm the only one who likes it. Sigh...

April 2012 Cookbook of the Month Voting

MELISSA CLARK month

April 2012 Cookbook of the Month Nominations Are Now Open!

Would love to have Melissa Clark as COTM - might have to breakdown and buy cook this now if it goes this route.

What are your most recent cookbook purchases? Late winter indulgences... [OLD]

Picked up some kale, beans & pork at the farmers market so I'll be giving this a go this weekend. Not sure if I'll be able to get my hands on smoked tomatoes and my pork shoulder is well over a pound so there may be some alterations

What are your most recent cookbook purchases? Late winter indulgences... [OLD]

Sound delish ! Will check that out. Around here kale & tomatillos wouldn't be at the fm at the same time so that isn't a combo I'd imagine in a fm book. Will try it for sure though.

Salads - What Combinations are You Using These Days?

One I've been enjoying of late is some mizuna(beautiful!) and orange with a vinagrette with olive oil, s&p, OJ. Simple and delish. Loving all these ideas and will definitely be trying the blue cheese trick.

What are your most recent cookbook purchases? Late winter indulgences... [OLD]

Yes, I recently got that too. I was either inspired here or on food52 or both. Love it! Want to get it for my mom as I love the writing with the recipes and think that would be right up her alley. I've only done the figgy piggy chicken so far and liked it but didn't follow the recipe exactly so may give it another go. Plan to do the broccoli salad soon too.

What are your most recent cookbook purchases? Late winter indulgences... [OLD]

Just got it and looking forward to sitting on the couch tonight and marking it up as well!

What are your most recent cookbook purchases? Late winter indulgences... [OLD]

I recently ordered Tender - Nigel Slater, One Block Feast, and The Santa Monica Farmers Market cookbook. Can't wait to get them. Will probably get the olive and caper book if it is COTM even though I haven't managed to participate in that in eons.
