Reasonable places to eat in St. John's NL

A word of warning -- Velma's is wildly overpriced for what it offers. That problem isn't unique to Velma's when it comes to the St. John's dining scene, however.

Best Fish and Chips in St. John's

Wild Horses, found on the corner of the road leading down to the Bell Island ferry in Portugal Cove, is also pretty good and it doesn't suffer from the crazy lines and crowding that one finds at By the Beach.

Best Fish and Chips in St. John's

You are thinking of the Galley, jcontario, and it has been closed for a number of years now. It was rather good indeed.

Annlachelle's recommendations of the Duke of Duckworth in town and By the Beach in nearby St. Philip's are both on the money. I find that By the Beach is much better, but you'll need a car to get out there. Leo's is also worth checking out.

Be prepared for sticker shock, as even simple dishes like fish and chips have shot up in cost in Newfoundland over the last few years.

Restaurant for a party of 18 near Gare Saint-Lazare, Paris

Thank you very much for your reply! This is useful information.

As these folks will be staying at the Concorde Saint-Lazare/Opera, I guess that they could just eat in that hotel's restaurant if they wanted to dine at a hotel. Might you be able to suggest a free-standing restaurant as well or will requiring a place that can handle a party of 18 seriously limit their options? Many of the premises in the area seemed to be rather small and poky the last time that I passed through there.

I have asked for clarification whether this is for a straight-forward dinner or for a dinner and a presentation. As of right now, I am operating under the assumption that it is the former. Should this assumption be incorrect, then I will update this thread as necessary.

Restaurant for a party of 18 near Gare Saint-Lazare, Paris

Does anyone know of a good, yet moderately priced (by Paris standards), restaurant suitable for a party of 18 people within easy walking distance of Gare Saint-Lazare? The restaurant has to take reservations as this is for a conference dinner.

At present, I don't know whether this proposed meal would be at midday or at night. If you could mention the style of cooking, price per person, whether the restaurant is good for lunch and/or dinner, the atmosphere, etc., it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much!

Charly Chan's Restaurant Kensington..YUMMY! Can't wait to go back!!

I tried the food from Charly Chan's a few times, and I must confess that I didn't think it was anything special. It's a few notches above most strip mall and food court Chinese grub, but it doesn't have a patch on Chinese food turned out by more authentic places.

Why not try U & Me on Centre Street in Chinatown, close to the bridge? Some people seem to dislike the place, but it has turned out some pretty good Chinese food over the years. Check out its website: http://www.uandmerestaurant.ca/.

Lemon & Hart Demerera rum in Chicago???

I'd be surprised if you can find it locally. Chicago is not a rum town.

If I were you, I'd see if you can find some local liquor stores run by people from the Caribbean. You might have better luck sourcing rums like Lemon Hart in such places.

The Ministry of Rum offers the following advice for what it's worth:

"Both Sams and Binnys have several stores so don't expect to find everything in every store, the newest Sams at 50 E. Roosevelt Rd. and the store at 1720 North Marcey Street, just off North Ave and Sheffield have the widest selections but the other stores are also well stocked.

"Binnys on North Clark St and their newest store at 1132 S. Jefferson Street have the best selections of the Binnys stores, if you only have the chance to visit one or two stores in Chicago. But having said that there are other Binnys stores where you might find something which has been overlooked such as a bottle of Demerara rum bottled by Bristol Spirits that is no longer being bottled.

"There are a couple of boutique stores on Wells south of North Ave that have stocked some hard to find rums in the past."

See http://www.ministryofrum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1077 and http://www.ministryofrum.com/forums/s... for some information about rum in Chicago and some ways to contact lovers of rum in the Chicagoland area.

Chinese delivery to Streeterville: ideas?

Does anyone have a decent place to suggest for Chinese food delivery to Streeterville other than Lan's? Good Chinese food seems to be in short supply here in the beating heart of downtown Chicago.

Dinner recommendations in Aberdeen

People talk about Silver Darling, a seafood place, like it is the only place in town for fine dining.

http://www.silverdarlingrestaurant.co.uk/

There is some buzz on the street about Bistro 210, a new arrival to the Aberdeen scene.

http://www.210bistro.com/

Also, La Stella has been a local favourite for a long, long time, but the former proprietor retired and there has been a change in management.

http://lastella.co.uk/

As I haven't been to any of these places, I can't comment on whether they cut the mustard. Despite all of the petropounds sloshing about, Aberdeen isn't much of a dining mecca. I like the place, but it's more of a pub town.

Chinese delivery to Streeterville: ideas?

As noted, Lan's wasn't my cup of tea. Having sampled several dishes from there, I believe that it is highly overrated.

Do you have any other delivery suggestions for good Chinese food? Fellow CHers?

Robb S, while not quite the same thing as a corned beef sandwich, I recommend that you try a large pastrami sandwich at M-One Cafe in Akasaka. It's the closest thing to an American deli sandwich that you're likely to find in Tokyo.

Bad Ass Cafe is still in business? Wow! I guess that getting in early on Temple Bar before it became trendy and heavily touristed really paid off. I dined there a few times back in 1987-88, just a few years after it opened.

If you like onion rings, don't forget to substitute onion rings for the fries that come with any of the burgers at the Akasaka location of WPC. Enough ex-pats go there and ask for this change that at times other than lunch, the waitstaff seem happy enough to accommodate this request. They will do so at no extra charge to you and the onion rings at WPC are very good.

Chinese delivery to Streeterville: ideas?

Friendship Chinese Restaurant in Logan Square no longer delivers to Streeterville, and that means that my craving for salt and pepper beef will have to be satisfied by another restaurant. Fellow Chowers, what other restaurants that deliver to Streeterville offer as good a version of salt and pepper beef? I tried Double Li, but they don't deliver. Suggestions?

Resto recs for dinner in St John's, Nfld please!

Don't overlook Magnum & Stein's or Bianca's:

http://www.magnumandsteins.ca/

http://www.biancas.net/

The latter is more fancy restaurant than casual bistro, but it's not ridiculously so. Both tend to feature a few dishes that feature local seafood. Bianca's also often has caribou, a delightful game meat if you've never tried it.

Basho, a restaurant run by a Newfoundlander with Japanese roots, is also a delightful spot. You will not be chowing down on local cuisine, though. Local ingredients? Yes. Local cuisine? No.

Junkadelic is good, if very expensive for what you get. The same can be said about Mexico Lindo just down the hill from Junkadelic.

Lost Squirrel, if you want a good burger in the Akasaka area, walk over to Akasaka Mitsuke station, cross the busy street in front of the station, and go to West Park Cafe in Akasaka Tokyu Plaza. Over there, you will find the best value burger in Tokyo: the plain, unadorned WPC Burger. Mmmm-mmmm good.

St John's Seafood

In most parts of Canada, "good" and "cheap" are mutually exclusive when it comes to food. I have had some luck in Vancouver with delicious bargain eats, but I have not been similarly lucky in other Canadian cities.

Yeah, I would never be in a hurry to go to Velma's, but people who seek out boiled dinner might. I suspect that you prefer fancier and more upscale dishes than boiled dinner. That being said, even for boiled dinner, there are probably better choices than Velma's.

Though in all fairness, even if the food at Velma's was underwhelming, you cannot compare a cheap diner like Velma's with a fine china superstar restaurant like Atlantica.

Scary Bill, the Beachy Cove Cafe is almost directly across the street from Atlantica. Portugal Cove becomes a dining destination. Now who would have though that would ever happen? :-)

Oh, and The Seafood Shop in Churchill Square normally gets decent reviews for the quality of its product.

As for the truck guys, well, if they can no longer be found down on the harbourside, you might find them in Churchill Square if they still have an open air market there from time-to-time. Again, someone else is likely to have a better idea than me.

Michel's Bakery offers Jiggs Dinner on Thursdays. It's a very uninspiring place to eat, but the food is normally inexpensive and reasonably good. Be forewarned that many of the items are precooked and then popped into the microwave to be reheated prior to serving if that matters to you.

Check out Beachy Cove Cafe in Portugal Cove if you've got a car. Here's their website: http://www.beachycovecafe.ca/. I'm not a boiled dinner kind of guy, but they do most Newfoundland standards quite well.
