San Antonio: Quest for the Best Mexican Food

Thank you for your comments, Jaymes.

I've NEVER seen a bean sprout in a fish taco...UGH. Kansas City Barbeque is not very good. and, no, SA doesn't suck...I've just not had a good meal in a restaurant here (Mexican or otherwise) in the 18 months I've lived here. I have traveled extensively in Mexico, Carribbean, Central and South America, and Europe and have eaten and cooked some fabulous food. I continue to cook fabulous food but am very wary of spending more money on San Antonio restaurants. Crosby, Stills, and Nash said "If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with" Thanks again and Salut!

San Antonio: Quest for the Best Mexican Food

Very good post Jaymes...Thank you for your insights. However, I would like to live in a city where I can pretty much go to any restaurant and not be disappointed. I've been disappointed in just about every restaurant I've been to in San Antonio (Mexican and others). I love San Antonio and the wonderful people here, but it doesn't seem like much of a "foodie" place. Also, most people can't afford to keep going to a restaurant in hopes that they will finally have a good meal

San Antonio: Quest for the Best Mexican Food

I couldn't agree with you more, mann2108.....SA sucks for Mexican food. I started a post similar to this one on Mexican food. I've been soooooo disappointed in the food in general in San Antonio. I love living here and love the vibe and the friendly people. But all the restaurants I've been to have been mediocre at best (including high end). I miss the food in San Diego

Mexican Food in San Antonio?

Thank you all for your suggestions. Can't wait to get started. I guess I was expecting Texas to be more like California in the Mexican food department. In San Diego you can walk into any Mexican restaurant (in any price range) and expect and GET great Mexican food. There is no such thing as bad food there lol. (Well maybe some of the touristy places are not that great, but locals in SD don't go the tourist places if they can help it.) Will just have to do some experimenting here in my new home of SA. Thanks again. I have traveled extensively in Mexico and there is also bad Mexican food there hehe.

Mexican Food in San Antonio?

I moved to San Antonio from Southern California almost two years ago. Love it here.....BUT...Where is the great Mexican food that SA is famous for? Have been to at least 20 little hole-in-the walls and four or five table service places including the much praised Los Barrios. Nothing memorable so far. Had breakfast at Taco Taco and it was better than the others, but nothing special and didn't like the long wait and cramped tables. I am very critical about salsa too, and I must say that I LOVED the salsa at Casa del Rio on Riverwalk (but the food, once again was not very good). Our neighbor owns La Victoria on Vance Jackson They are only open for breakfast and lunch. Food there was GREAT and very reasonable. Please help me...I miss GOOD MEXICAN (not covered with cheese whiz or sour cream please).

San Antonio Burgers

By the way in my humble opinion, Chris Madrid's was one of the worst burgers I've ever had. A huge bun does not make a good burger. The meat was large but very thin and tasteless. Was served with hothouse tomatoes and onions which were chopped too large (not sliced thin). I didn't get cheese because saw some on other plates and it looked like velveeta (and too much of it too). Also the fries were limp and greasy. Also hated having to order and pick up at the counter. Not my kind of place, but San Antonioians seem to love it

San Antonio Burgers

thanks everyone! Have been to the Cove...think I split a burger with my friend (unmemorable I guess) and I don't like having to order at a counter (Chris Madrid's too). Big'z seems to be quite far from my home neighborhood (MonteVista/AltaVista). the Palm website looks great, but I think I would order something other than a burger in an upscale place. I would like to find a place (bar perhaps) with just a really great burger and draft beer. Have been to Cheesy Jane's and it was pretty good (even better considering we had a coupon for a free burger with purchase of another). Thanks again
