Smelling your food before you take a bite

I don't know why, but It creeps me out if someone smells their food on their fork before putting it in their mouth. Is this normal behavior? I'm talking about someone doing it before every bite of food. Why keep doing it? Has anyone else observed this?

What are you baking these days? June/July 2013 edition (Through 7/31/13)

Sure! But I can't guarantee you won't lose a hand whilst reaching for it. ;) My hubster is kind of possessive when it comes to sweets.

cake recipe

If I have a recipe for 3 9" cake pans, can I use one 10", 9", and 8"? for the same amount of batter? I am using the recipe called Chocolate celebration cake from "lick the bowl good" website. My husband turns 60 tomorrow so wanted to do something he's never seen before, at least in this house!

Thanks miss_belle for your reply! I will probably steam as you suggest or treat as we do acorn and roast, whatever we do will be delicious just knowing it came out of our own garden :)

Here we go again!

Went out to the veggie patch and came upon this mammoth! I swear it wasn't there a week ago. This is one we didn't plant so were figuring its probably a yellow crookneck, as thats all I can imagine it could be. Or not? But it's huge already!, is it still edible? The underside lying on the ground is lighter yellow. Should we go ahead and harvest and eat or is this something for Guinness world record, lol.

If price, availability and calories were not a factor.... what food could you eat for every meal for the next 30 days and not get sick of it.

Tostadas/chalupas-I'd scarf these for the rest of my life if I could, even, and especially if I didn't live in Texas!!

Crispy fried corn tortillas smeared with seasoned re-fried beans, sharp cheddar cheese, fresh crisp iceberg lettuce, garden tomatoes, diced avocados, salsa and sour cream. No protein required.

Any idea what these are?

We determined they were freaking weeds. I've never seen a plant grow that fast. So today was spent weeding the weeds so to speak. Hope the real plants produce real veggies. Tomatoes, corn peppers and squash doing very well. Thanks everyone for your help :)

Nope, not mint, just went out to give it the smell test, lol. But I really thought you were right as we used to have mint in the front yard. It is still a mystery, but thanks everyone for your replies!! I guess we will just wait and see. Whatever it is, it's doing very well ;)

Long - Maybe Annoyingly So - Report On Our Recent Trip

Enjoyed reading your reviews !And it wasn't too long at all, love reading long posts, lol.

I went to Chicago last April 2012, as my son graduated from Navy boot camp, but I was so nervous about being in a strange city I didn't get to explore all the great restaurants What a pity for me. Ha.

My sailor and I did get to Giordano's famous stuffed Pizza place (and every other sailor's family's too, seems all the sailors want pizza after boot camp). WE had a HUGE Veggie that was sublime and something I've never seen before here is Texas. What a pity that, as well.

Anyway enjoyed you're write up, you should have a blog..

Cupcake flavors for spring/summer?

How about Pina Colada? Substitute rum extract for the rum obviously for the kiddos.

It's a vanilla cake flavored with pineapple, rum and coconut milk. Sounds pretty much spring summery and tropical.

Serious Eats has a nice simple recipe. Personally I might add some lime in there somewhere. Just another thought for you

What's for Dinner #212 - The New York City area code Edition [OLD]

We are having Mexican stew for dinner tonight. A recipe taught to my husband by his past co worker's on the job as a brick mason.
First you boil 20-30 jalepenos and a large tomato until soft. Once soft and juicy he mashes them with a potato masher, adds cumin, salt and garlic powder or fresh garlic if we have it.
Meanwhile in another pan he sautés two to three different proteins. Mostly pork and beef. Can be ground meat or large hunks of meat he'll cut into small bite sized pieces. Gets them nice and Caramelized and with a nice crust. He then throws in 6 medium sized potatoes cut into small dice. These are
All sautéed together until potatoes are tender.
Then the pepper and tomato water sauce combines with the meat.
To serve, place stew into bowls, char up corn and flour tortilla's on the open gas flame and eat. We tear up small pieces of tortillas and scoop a spoonful of stew on to each one and devour.
It is the most delicious meal. I'm not sure the Hispanic name of this dish( but if anyone is in the know, please let us in on it).
To us it is Mexican stew. We make a huge pot and eat it all week.
For breakfast we scramble with a couple of eggs and eat as a taco!
My contribution tonight was chocolate cupcakes with a vanilla flour frosting for dessert. All from scratch ;)

What's for Dinner #211 - The Relaxing (hopefully!) Weekend Edition [OLD]

End of the paycheck came way too soon. Mexican casserole using the dregs of my pantry. Leftover chili from a week ago. A 1/4 of an onion, 3 scallions from my backyard. Some tomato paste from a tube and chicken granules to make a stock. Threw in leftover pork carnitas. Layered that with leftover refried beans, corn tortillas. Topped with cheese "spread" and a tomatillo salsa I found in our closet saved from MRE'S we were gifted with after our last hurricane. Instant mashed potatoes on the side.

Some of us hounds are truly poor. But thankful for every single bite.

Temp for a 7hr dutch oven pork roast

250-275, but agree should not cook with no one at home. If you have a Crock pot, I'd do everything you were planing in that rather than the oven unmonitored. No need to marinate, but I would brown it first.
