Scottish food in Manhattan?

That is what I heard, certain food products from Scotland can not be served here.

Scottish food in Manhattan?

We have an exchange student staying with us from Scotland and was wondering if there are any restaurants serving Scottish food? Not a personal favorite cuisine of mine but he misses it. Most of the places I can think of are primarily Irish, like Molly's. Any suggestions appreciated, I have been unable to find anything. Thanks.

Italian Restaurant Advice For My Birthday!!!

Ok, I ended up at Basta Pasta since I could not get a reservation for a party of 6 on late notice. It was a disappointment. We sat for 10 minutes before even getting a menu and it was 30 minutes before we had our drink order taken, Bread arrived around the same time but no plates or olive oil, that took another 10 minutes. They have the waiters handling too many tasks. Even with the poor service, it would not have mattered if the food was great.

The food was not bad, it was just not memorable. Within a few hours no one could remember what they had ordered, nothing really stood out. Everything was just bland. It was also expensive, our bill for a party of 6 was almost $400.00 and we did not order any wine. A similar meal at Le Zie or Da Andrea, possibly even Crispo, would have cost a lot less and been a much better overall experience, both food and service. I was hoping to like this place but this will fall under the "one and done" category for us.

Italian Restaurant Advice For My Birthday!!!

I have been to Po and Perla looks interesting but their menu is not as appealing for my tastes. L'Artusi is a possibility. Thank you for your recs.

Italian Restaurant Advice For My Birthday!!!

I don't mean to hijack this post, although it is over a month old, but everyone on here seems to know the answers to what I am looking for.

I am taking my wife out for her birthday on Saturday with some family members and she wants Italian.. It is late notice so my initial choices of Lupa, Osteria Morini and Ciano are booked. I am a huge fan of Crispo, Le Zie, Da Andrea and Bianca so my wife want to go someplace new. I have never tried Basta Pasta but it looks interesting. Has anyone eaten there and knows how it compares to my other favorites? Are there any other Italian restaurants similar that I might be missing? (larger menu, below 14th street, great pasta, etc) Thanks everyone, it has been awhile since I have been here and have always received the best recs.

Stuck in Elmsford/Tarrytown-Any recs?

Thanks everyone! By the way, has anyone tried the Pizza & Pasta place (Capri?) next to the Stop & Shop?

Stuck in Elmsford/Tarrytown-Any recs?

I am working all week in the Tarrytown/Elmsford area. Can anyone recommend any good restaurants for take out? The options seem limited at this point. Any recommendations appreciated. Thank you.

Celeste still good?

cimui, it is funny that you mentioned La Vela since I was just looking at their menu. It looks pretty good. is it larger than Celeste and maybe more accomodating for a party of 5? I am used to cramped restaurants but I am bringing my father and he may not have the same feelings.

Celeste still good?

I was going to be in that area tomorrow and thought I would stop in for an early dinner, probably around 5:30. There will be 5 of us, you think that we will be comfortable enough? I am a big fan of their downtown outpost, Bianca, which is tiny, and their larger midtown Teodora. Celeste is the only one I have not tried. Since you are in the neighborhood, you have any recs if Celeste does not work out, Italian preferred? We have been to Nonna. Thanks

Celeste still good?

I will finally get a chance to stop in Celeste tomorrow for dinner. It has been on my "places to go" list for 4 years but I never get around to it.I know about the space issues but can anyone tell me if their food is still worth the trip? Also, does anyone know if they still have the cheese guy? Thanks!

Where to find great gnocchi in Manhattan?

I LOVE the gnocchi in gorgonzola at both Bianca and Da Andrea. It is almost a tie but if you like your gorgonzola a little sharper than choose Bianca.Unfortunately both are downtown. Teodora, a sister restaurant to Bianca, also serves gnocchi and is located in midtown.

Which steakhouse & WHY?

Interesting that you have had some inconsistencies with the preparation of your filet. One of the reasons I always liked the Strip House is their ability to cook a filet medium. Usually when you ask for medium it comes out more well done or rare than medium. Strip House was always able to give me the nice char on the outside with a nice pink inside. I thought the quality of their meet was great, I hope nothing has changed with their meat supplier. Thanks for the feedback.

Which steakhouse & WHY?

What problem did you have with the filet mignon at Strip House? I don't usually order filet mignon but found theirs to be perfectly cooked and the meat was lean without losing any tenderness or flavor. It was the best filet I have had in New York. Just curious what you found wrong with it.

Which steakhouse & WHY?

If money is not an issue, and all these places are not inexpensive, than Strip House would be my first choice. Great quality, inventive side dishes, and a romantic location and atmosphere. I would go there for the chocolate cake alone.

cincinnati spaghetti

I lived in Cincinnati for many years and have not found anyplace in the area that serves anything like it. Your best bet is to just go to www.skylinechili.com and order the stuff directly and make it yourself at home. That is what many Cincinnatians do when they are living away from home.

Moving from Italy to NYC: Best places to eat/drink to keep Italian lifestyle alive.

Bianca meets your criteria and has very good food primarily from the Emilia-Romagna region of Northern Italy. Small, cozy, great wine selections and terrific food. It is also close geographically to where you want to be.

Dinner near Union Square this Saturday (22nd)...?

I would also recommend Girgio's of Gramercy.

Craving truffles and truffle oil

kobe, speaking of the Urbani web site, thank you for the link, I did not see any place where you could order the product or any list of suppliers that may carry the product. Do you know where I might be able to find the product? Thanks for all your info. Now I just wish I had a normal teenage girl that enjoyed hamburgers or hot dogs. I have one that hounds me for truffles and raw oysters.

Craving truffles and truffle oil

Thank you for all your suggestions. I checked on truffle oil and there is a nice selection at Citarella. Would you recommend white or black truffle oil for pastas, etc or is it purely a matter of taste?

Craving truffles and truffle oil

I have been to Da Andrea many times but I seem incapable of ordering anything other than their wonderful gnocchi with gargonzola. What a great place. Thanks for the info on truffle oil, I am a little embarassed to admit that I did not know that.

Craving truffles and truffle oil

Ever since I took my daughter to Aquagrill for their truffle crusted cod and truffle oil, she has been driving me crazy to take her back. She loves dishes prepared with truffles or truffle oil. I have been to Aquagrill too many times recently and would love to try someplace new, preferably Italian. Anyone know of any good Italian restaurants serving anything with truffles or truffle oil? She had a fantastic black truffle ravioli dish last year at Johns of 12th Street but unfortunately it was the only memorable dish. All suggestions appreciated!

Ben & Jack's Vs. Wolfgang's

Great thread, I had recently posted one regarding a similar topic. As far as Luger clones, how does MarkJoseph rank compared to Wolfgangs or Ben & Jacks?

ISO great porterhouse in Manhattan

I know everyone is going to say to forget Manhattan and go to Peter Lugers but that is not an option this time. I am bringing my father out for his birthday and he wants a great steak, preferably porterhouse in Manhattan. It will be a group of 8 of us. I had a good porterhouse at Blair & Perrone (now closed) and a not so good porterhouse at Porter House in TWC. I was looking at Ben & Jacks since I know it is a Luger spin off and is in a good area for all of us to meet. I was also looking at Wolfgangs on Park Avenue and considering Mark Josephs downtown. Can anyone comment on these choices or have any other suggestions? Thank you.

Padre Figlio - Anyone been yet?

I was just about to ask the same question when I read your post. I would also love any feedback on this place. It opened next door to my sons apartment and the menu looks very interesting. The area has plenty of steak places but the Italian dishes on the menu look very good. Hopefully it is like Pietro's back in their glory years.

UES Italian-Need some recs

Have you been to Sando's recently? I had thought of trying the place a few months ago when I was in that area but plans were changed at last minute. I have heard some mixed things but mostly positive. Any insights on Sando's is appreciated!

UES Italian-Need some recs

A relative of ours just moved to the UES, somewhere in the 80"s near 3rd and we are taking her out to dinner in a few weeks. I am not in this area often and not as familiar with the restaurants. I am hoping to find a nice, neighborhood type Italian restaurant, along the lines of a Le Zie or Crispo. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

My dilemma-large group with kids?

Thanks RGR. I have been to Porter House and did not care for it enough to return. I have not been to Trattoria Trecolori before but it sounds interesting. I have been to Landmarc downtown several times but I forgot they opened at TWC.
