I posted on Thursday asking about recs for a bakery that could make a strawberry shortcake-type of cake (basically, a white sheet cake w/ fresh strawberries and whipped cream that could be decorated in a baby shower theme).

A couple of posters mentioned the Ranch 99 Mall in Richmond, so I tried there first.

Unfortunately, the prices were more than I was hoping to pay - Ranch 99 Bakery's price was $70 for a 1/2 sheet, and the cake would be 'mixed fruit' (they do not make a strawberries-only cake). I also tried Sheng Kee Bakery, but the price they quoted me was still high - $75.

Anyway, I ended up hitting the Safeway in Richmond and was quoted a price of $25 (on special through June 19th, I believe - regular price is $35). This is for a 1/2 sheet white cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream, and it comes decorated in a baby shower theme, as well.

I know Safeway cakes don't get the greatest of reviews, but I'm on a serious budget and the price is too good to pass up. So I will end up ordering it from there, most likely, and will try to post post-shower to let everyone know how it was.

I should clarify - I'm looking more for the type of cake that Ruth mentioned, so I guess not a true shortcake.

Does anyone know of a good Chinese bakery around Berkeley? I'd be willing to go to Oakland's Chinatown, too, if need be.

I'm hosting a baby shower for a friend in June. She's requested a strawberry shortcake for the dessert. I've called several bakeries, and have been quoted prices ranging from $80-$100 for a half sheet decorated cake. I'm on a budget unfortunately, and that price is too high for me.

Does anyone know of a bakery that makes a great, cheaper strawberry shortcake? I live in Berkeley but am willing to travel to Oakland, Emeryville, Albany, El Cerrito, or Richmond.
