Jewish haimish cooking goes Tribeca
Up to the early seventies there were still non-frum young people that kept kosher-in and out-today its frum and kosher -or nothing.Look at BUBBY's restaurant in Tribeca---I'm sure that there are numerous other examples especially out of town.If our own do not care just imagine what the corporate world's feelings are.Even Manischewitz does non kosher -they took over Cohen's which makes trief stuff too.Sara Lee advised their BESTS/SINAI/ WILNO customers to make the switch to their BEEF products!!!!!
Why do we stand for it?
The only restaurants I go to are Schnitzi,Glatt Kosher family,Budda Bodai,Little Lads and substational E.15 th st-----all the rest rip you off.You are frum-you are subject to the frum business world-10% kashrut---90% business.

Gottliebs is overpriced and serves meal marts cold cuts.The only resturants i go to are Scnitzi's and Glatt kosher family on 18th ave-----all others in brooklyn are rip offs-except for substational's east 15th st location!!!!!

Kosher Tortellini
In the early-mid 90's the kosher market was flooded with israeli dried soy filled tortellini----then they disappeared-i still miss them since they were an inexpensive option for yom kippur,hashanah rabah and purim.

Based on the info gotten on this board we just tried AMERICAN KOSHER CORNED---make that carragenan beef-----simply awful.BJ"S has gone from Best's Kosher pastrami to Hebrew National Pastrami to this?????? Meal Mart's corned beef is better by far.It is a shame that my fellow orthodox jews have taken Glatt down to such depths----even Abeles and Heymann injects seaweed into their meats!!!!!!! In the early 90's I tried to make corned beefand eggs with International corned beef----and smelled cinnamon!!!!!

BJ's is jewish owned and has less and less kosher products over the years.Which BJ's carry American Kosher--and who owns the brand now???--it used to be from Mass.

Now it has been some time after the breakdown of AARON's main production and distribution sustem----so HAR NOF from Cherry Hill has arrived with a Deli line incl kishka under OU and Breuers(Solomon's, I hear is the source of the meat.)Also Kiryas joel poultry is not just poultry anymore with meat from texas and a beef deli line.It is interesting to note that if you know where to buy your Glatt deli products, they are now cheaper than Hebrew National and Empire National, products at least in Brooklyn!!!!!!!!

three yrs after THE GREENS closed,I went to WILD GINGER 112 Smith Street--good lunch special.It is a five minute walk from 140 Livingston Street Housing Court.Under Zev Schwarcz hashgacha.It is great to have a kosher place again---I still miss THE GREENS.

it has a zagat rating and has small portions----it was better in the 80's when it was non-glatt--it was only non-glatt place which was shomer shabbos.
Another NYC Hot Dog question
no such thing as cheap in manhattan---mendy's on coney is. ave in midwood has a 99cent promotion now.But the kosher franks of yesterday are just a memory, even Ralbag certified hebrew nationals are inferior---and the package is smaller!!!!!I even had Tibor's in Cleveland in 2005 --took them home to brooklyn---they weren't exactly great!!!The only hot dog that i like these days are Aaron's chicken franks.A good substitute for hot dogs are the Israeli turkey sausages,but thay are very very fatty!!!!!

BAGEL CENTRAL is now treif----when it was kosher they used the same trays for milk and meat!!!!!!!My daughter was only seven when we went there in 2001---and all she would eat there was the FRUIT SALAD!!!!!! Also:There is nothing kosher in New Brunswick canada.But Sy. Martin and the fundy trail is worth shlepping food!!!!!!

I took MEAL MART Bologna slices,cut them into strips and dipped them in all-whites and in whole wheai matzo meal mixed with potato starch and fried them in olive oil--I called them REDNECK FRITTERS---I am a country music fan and got my inspiration from a Tim Mcgraw song. I used to the same to chunks of EMPIRE cooked turkey breast when it cost $2.99-3.99 a pound when I bought it at the old pathmark unsliced.

GLATT,all over:ABELES AND hEYMANN AND iNTERNATIONAL----ALSO: non-GLATT EMPIRE NATIONAL at their plant in williamsburg and at a kosher butcher on 13th ave and 53rd st.The empire nat does not contain veal.
