Family trip to Victoria in October

Thanks to all for the fantastic ideas. We will need to do some farmer's market shopping as we love to cook and will do some meals in. Cassie, we're from central CA so we have a pretty good variety but looking forward to the fresh seafood! Thanks again :)

Family trip to Victoria in October

Hi All. I am sure there are tons of threads on this though my search didn't turn up much. My family is heading to Victoria at the end of October for a week. My parents (60s), my sister, her husband (30s) and two littles (2 and 7mo), myself and my husband (30s) and our two littles (4 and 2). We have rented a lovely house (and a large 12 person van :)) for the duration of our stay in Victoria. We are staying close to downtown near beacon hill park. I'm really looking for some suggestions of good places to eat and things to do during our visit. We love good food (and good wine and beer) but don't much care for trendy eateries (I once spent a small fortune on a meal that consisted of freeze dried slivers of vegetables in Chicago and wondered why I hadn't just gone out for deep dish). We'll have the kids with us at most times, though I was thinking of taking my 4 year old daughter to tea. Looking forward to some suggestions!

Thank you for taking the time to cover all the options!!

Thank you for the response! I so appreciate it!

San Francisco with my little girl

Hello all. We are starting a new tradition this Christmas season. Both grandmothers and myself are taking my darling 3.5 year old to SF to see the nutcracker and Christmas decorations. I lived in SF years ago, but would love some advise from recent residents. I was hoping to do the teddy bear tea at the Ritz, but they never returned my call and when I had already purchased the ballet tickets and called to reserve a tea spot, it turned out that that Friday is a blackout day (of course). So, I am looking for suggestions. We will probably take the train up on Thursday night or Friday morning. We are staying at the Omni. The performance is at 2pm friday. I would love if Crown and Crumpet were still around and we could do tea there. Is there anywhere similar we could do an early afternoon tea? Also, is there a fun place for dinner? She is very well behaved, and would love a whimsical place. Thanks for the help!

Quebec City next week!

OliverB,

Sounds like you had such a fantastic trip! Thank you for sharing. My husband and I will be in Quebec only 2 nights and I was hoping you might suggest which restaurants we should visit. We prefer cozy dining experiences and try to avoid trendy food. We won't have a car, but I assume taxis are readily avaliable??? Thanks for your help!

Mid-range to high-end Montreal restos: personal reccos

Thank you for this post. Very helpful! Any idea which would be a good choice for a Monday night????

Palena or Restaurant Eve

Komi was our first choice for that night, but they are closed the entire time we are in DC.

Spiaggia, A Trivoli, North Pond or ?? some help please

Officially off my list. Thanks for the advice.

Palena or Restaurant Eve

Some help...My husband and I are visiting DC at the end of this month and are celebrating our anniversary. We would like to indulge in a special dinner that will blow us away. I have reservations at both Restaurant Eve and Palena. I have to say, first impressions, the person taking the reservations at Restaurant Eve was very warm and accommodating. She asked if it was a special occasion and ended the conversation saying they looked forward to our visit. The woman at Palena was brusque. I was leaning towards RE as I so enjoyed the book the Omnivores Dilemma and Polyface supplies Restaurant Eve.... I then read some mixed reviews and thought I should check with the hounders.

Thanks

Spiaggia, A Trivoli, North Pond or ?? some help please

Spiaggia, A Trivoli, North Pond or ?? some help please

Some help please….my husband and I are visiting Chicago for a few nights in early September. We have reservations at Alinea, but are looking for another special dinner on Saturday night. We are self-proclaimed foodies and indulge on vacation. The quality of the meal is first (I would love to be blown away), though I would prefer a more romantic ambiance. Perhaps something contrasting Aliena. Price is no object, though transportation is. We are staying at the Sofitel Watertower. Any advice is much appreciated.

Polarbear,

Thanks for the comments and the welcome. I did a search, but most of the links looked old and thought I’d freshen the date a bit. The tacos are grilled at tacos TJ. I did forget to mention the Mederterain Grill which is truly downtown. The best hummus I’ve ever had, though they are only open M-F for lunch. Let me know about the Ribs and Tips actual restaurant. As I mentioned, I’ve only used them for catering and haven’t been to their brick and mortar. Favritos in Fowler has wonderful Mexican. I will try Don Pepe's, Zamora's and Imperial Garden. Thanks for the tips.

Tavmark – you are correct. Chris is managing the Downtown Club which is why I think it has improved so much!

Just a quick post to give some of my humble opinions on the best of Fresno….

Chef’s Table – Though it is attached to Elbow Room, the 2 have little in common besides ownership and location. First class service, menu and ambiance. This is a special occasion place, bring the $$$$. http://www.chefstablefresno.com/

Cracked Pepper - http://crackedpepperbistro.com/
literally, second in the "best meals in Fresno" in my humble opinion. The bread pudding, which I normally can’t stand, is amazing! Coincidentally, it is the only thing on the “take-out” menu. Absolutely try the eggplant napoleon….so wonderful!

Flemings - chain, but still really yummy - http://www.flemingssteakhouse.com/loc...

Bistro Rustico - good nearing great "new" Italian. Plus, I like that they use mostly local ingredients. http://sanfrancisco.citysearch.com/pr...

Pangea - newish Fresno scene...good with occasional flashes of great small plates - http://www.pangearestaurant.net/

Twist - the new Fresno scene...goodish food - http://www.twistlounge.com/

Cafe Rousseau in the Tower – Sometimes the food is a hit or miss (I think it depends on who is cooking), but the bar is a wonderful spot! http://caferousseau.com/

Tacos Tijuana on Belmont – Not the classiest joint in Fresno, but the fish tacos are killer!

Long Island – Dependably good food with a “Cheers”ish vibe. If the special is ever chicken wellington, order it!

Thai House off Shaw – Yummy, yummy, yummy. Gold bags and basil fried rice are a must!

Max’s Café – I sometimes get cravings for the sweet potato fries. Some of the rest of the menu is hit and miss. The chicken salad is always good. Also a place that values local produce, etc.

Downtown Club – The update in management has really done some wonderful things to the menu. Unfortunately, I think you have to be a member to eat here and it is only open for lunch. http://www.thedowntownclub.com/

Trelio (clovis) – The food is normally goodish. I had the best pumpkin soup there. The brown bag dinners are super fun. http://www.treliorestaurant.com/

Sam’s deli – yes please! Such good sandwiches!

Ribs and Tips - They are downtown and I think only open for lunch. I hired them to cater an event and had people calling me after pleading for their name. Ribs and bbq chicken out of this world! Pilaf and ranch beans also wonderful! They are such nice people to deal with, they are a keeper in my book!

Shepards Inn (across from Amtrak) - Super yummy Basque food. Garlic fried chicken is wonderful. The shepard's meal will fill you up!
