HELP: Survey on Pasta Cooking

Please help with my experiment on pasta cooking!

1) How much water do you normally use to cook a pound of pasta? The box for many types of pasta recommends 4-8 quarts.
2) How little do you think it is possible to use, and still get good pasta?

I will be doing some experiments, if you do an experiment, please let me know the results.

My purpose is to determine carbon dioxide emission reduction if we all used the optimal (minimal) amount of water to cook our pasta!

Thanks!

water and pot for spaghetti / pasta cooking

I would like some "expert' opinions on boiling water for cooking spaghetti. I am doing an environmental impact analysis on reducing the amount of water used for cooking spaghetti at home. I always use a lot less than the box says, and it tastes fine. Has anyone found the optimal amount to reduce energy used in boiling and maintaining the hot water vs having totally sticky starchy pasta? What about the shape of the pot? If I used less water in a wider pot, would that achieve the temperature quicker and still give the pasta space to move?
