Quick eats in New Bern

I had a great meal at 247 Craven and was out within an hour. Moore's Barbecue for fried seafood and obviously BBQ. Pete and Nicky's is a good hole in the wall lunch spot.

Beer Growlers in Savannah

Sorry I should have clarified, I wish we could get growler fills (legally) at stores and beer bars. We have been able to purchase growlers at breweries or from a store that are already sealed and in that brewery's labeled growler for some time now.

The new Whole Foods in South Park (Charlotte)

Completely agree Mike. I should also mention, the bulk section is great. The prices are very low and you can get exactly the amount that you need (comes in handy of you cook for 2). I usually stock up on raw almonds, organic grits, oatmeal, etc.. Also, they have a bulk spice section so if a recipe calls for a teaspoon of something expensive like cardamom, etc. you can buy just a bit for way less. The other day I bout 34 ounces of EVOO (365 brand) for $5.99, less than it would cost at Walmart! You can not beat the quality of their meats, seafood and produce and their prices are extremely competitive. They even offer printable coupons online.

I prefer it over Earth Fare hands down. Earth Fare's prices are considerably higher and the selection is smaller and honestly I believe the quality is inferior.

Hopefully NC will change our growler laws soon!

Check out the meat section. You'll see plenty of signs indicating the meats that are locally sourced. The Whole Foods here in Raleigh also sells quite a lot of locally made packaged products as well as produce. Take a look.

Charlotte to Asheville drive lunch

I also came in to say Bridges BBQ in Shelby. It's on 74 on the left when you are driving towards Asheville.

I agree with this entire post. Also, the orange cheese is better than the white cheese :)

Best Pork Chop in The Triangle?

We miss Magnolia Grill already, unfortunately neither of us tried their pork chop while we had the chance :(

Thanks for the recommendations, I'm thinking of taking him to either Vin Rouge or Watts Grocery. I'm assuming if their pork chop is as good as their other offerings my husband will be sure to have a change of heart.

Best Pork Chop in The Triangle?

My husband claims that he has never had a good pork chop and thus all pork chops are dry and flavor-less. Where would you recommend me taking him so I can change his mind? Thanks in advance!

Best Eastern NC BBQ

I had a great meal at Stillwater the last time I was in Beaufort. My husband had the shrimp & grits and I had the airline chicken, we both really liked our entrees as well as the fried green tomato appetizer. We sat at one of the tables overlooking the water, overall it was a really nice meal.

Best Eastern NC BBQ

Moore's in New Bern is great. One of my top 5.

I had a BBQ sandwich at Big Oak Drive-In the other day (about 10-15 min from Emerald Isle), it was pretty good, but not spectacular.

What direction are you coming from, tons of great places along the way if you are headed to EI from the west. Wilbur's and Ken's are my favorite.

north carolina foodie towns?

Although I think the Triangle has the best food in the state, it is lacking in the scenery department.

Since you have already been to Asheville a few times I would recommend either the High Country (Boone, Blowing Rock & surrounding areas), the Crystal Coast, (specifically Beaufort) or Wilmington.

Although I have visited Beaufort and Wilmington quite a bit I do not know it well enough to do it justice and since I have seen other posts about these two towns I'll leave it up to someone else.

I lived in Boone while my husband and I were in grad school and we fell in love with the high country. It is breathtakingly beautiful. If you love the outdoors and friendly people this is your place. Boone is a laid-back hippy college town with locals and vacationers mixed in. Blowing Rock on the other hand, is a more upscale quaint little mountain town that is mostly inhabited by second home owners, retirees and vacationers. Banner Elk is the highest town east of the Rockies and has views for miles.

My High Country favorites include:

-The Gamekeeper (Blowing Rock) Southern upscale game fare with a killer wine list http://www.gamekeeper-nc.com/default.htm

-Storie Street Grille (Blowing Rock) solid dinner service http://www.storiestreetgrille.com/

-Proper (Boone) great innovative southern food with locally sourced ingredients http://www.propermeal.com/Propermeal/...

-Jackalope's View (Beech Mountain) Great food and wine (they won a few wine spectator awards) and an even more AMAZING view. http://www.archersinn.com/docs/dinner...

-Stick Boy Bread Company (Boone) excellent breakfast pastries http://www.stickboybread.com/

I have also heard great things about Joy Bistro in Boone and the restaurant at Westglow.

Since you said you would be visiting in late October, I will give you a word of caution. The weather could be very pleasant or it could be cold and windy. So if you are not a fan of the cold, I suggest you try Wilmington or the Crystal Coast.

Any suggestions for places to eat and things to do in the Outer Banks NC

When we are in Frisco we always go the The Orange Blossom Cafe for breakfast, very good pastries, coffee, bacon egg and cheese bagels, etc.

What's a good alternative to the Magnolia Grill?

Four Square would be a good alternative.

Pathetic Peach Cobbler at Allen & Son

I had Ken's for the first time a couple of months ago and really enjoyed it. I liked the prevalence of black pepper in the sauce, which set it apart from other places in that area.

Never tried Grady's or Jack Cobb's, thanks for the recommendation.

Talked to my husband about this and we have actually have tried over 100 restaurants maybe even 150. Years ago we used to keep a running list with our rankings. The thing about 'cue is that it can vary so wildly from meal to meal so honestly it's hard to have a static top 5 or whatever.

We are slightly addicted to BBQ :) In fact, our son's first taste of meat was at Moore's Barbecue in New Bern.

Then you clearly have better taste in BBQ than me ;)

Didn't mean to offend anyone, I was just curious if anyone had ventured outside of the triangle to sample any of our state's other offerings because I don't get the A&S hype.

::bows down to Fredb's BBQ superiority::

I too have eaten at MANY BBQ restaurants across the state (like 50+) and I still don't like it. But like I said earlier, to each his own. BBQ is subjective. Glad you like A&S, it's just not for me.

Help! I need green peanuts!!!

I make my boiled peanuts with raw peanuts which are always available at any of the local chain grocery stores.

My grandmother-in-law on the other hand only uses green peanuts, but she lives on a farm in Eastern NC so they are more easy to come by in her area.

ASHEVILLE -- Light Dinner Suggestion?

The times I've been to White Duck there has been a line out the door, but it moves very quickly as people wait in line to place their order and then find a seat. A waitress will usually bring out your tacos within 10 or so minutes of ordering.

I love White Duck.

Pathetic Peach Cobbler at Allen & Son

I honestly feel like some of you folks have never eaten at some of the great BBQ restaurants in NC (Wilbur's, Bridge's, Parker's, Ken's, B's, Moore's, Lexington etc). . I've tried it quite a few times and have found it inedible, it was that bad. I've never heard anyone mention Allen & Sons in the top 10. Just my 2 cents, to each their own.

I can't speak for their desserts, but I'm not a fan of their BBQ. I think the sauce is good and I love all the smokey wood flavor, but the meat itself is very dry and some of the pieces have a burnt taste/texture. So many better BBQ restaurants in our state.

Dinner in RTP Again

Four Square in Durham is excellent.

I also love The Fed (Federal Lounge) in Durham. This place has more of a laid-back "vibe" and the prices are great.

Poole's is my favorite in Raleigh. Sometimes the wait can be daunting especially on the weekend. There is no dinner service Sun-Tue.
