Suggestions for afternoon drinks/appetizers this weekend?
There was a similar question to this and someone suggested Gottino? Apparently it has an outdoor space. I think they said it was only beer and wine though.
Dell'Anima vs Hearth which is better for a vegetarian?
I had decided on Meatless Monday at Dell'anima, because Ciano which I was most interested in seemed too meaty (unless they did the tasting menu). Thanks for the notice (about Hearth not being very Italian) though, Kathryn, you have helped a lot!
Dell'Anima vs Hearth which is better for a vegetarian?
Figuring out our last meal in NY and wondering if one is better than the other? Three of us eat meat, two do not.
Thanks!
Itinerary for end of May trip
Thanks Kathryn, I meant the Tavern Room which is less formal, right? Will it be okay for a vegetarian? I'll send my friend the link to Craft and let her decide.
Itinerary for end of May trip
Thanks for all the help! I would really appreciate some final critiques of my itinerary:
Friday: Breakfast: Shopsins
afternoon snack: Gottino
Dinner: Dirt Candy
Saturday: Breakfast: Minetta Tavern
Matinee at Book of Mormon
Dinner: Gramercy (Tavern I think)
Sunday: Brunch: Locanda Verde
Dinner: Either ABC Kitchen or Craft (keeping in mind that I'm with a vegetarian is one
better than the other?
Monday: Breakfast/lunch: The Breslin
Dinner: Dell'Anima (Meatless Monday) Or?
Thanks again, I'll be sure to report back;)
Best mid priced Italian with a vegetarian?
Just looking for opinions on which Italian would work with a vegetarian. I am interested in Il Buco and was also looking at I Sodi, but neither of them seemed to have much choice for a vegetarian. I know Ciano is expensive, but would that have more choices? Thanks for your help!
NY hound visiting San Francisco. Must Try Foods?
The two places that come to mind are Bar Agricole for drinks and food, and Canteen for either brunch or dinner. Bar Agricole is open late.
I've searched the boards and now I need an opinion! Midtown visit itinery.
Thanks! I'll look into that as well.

Thanks Kathryn! I read some of your posts on other threads and I really appreciate your input! Do you have an opinion on Ciano vs I Sodi or Da Andrea?
I've searched the boards and now I need an opinion! Midtown visit itinery.
The problem is I am staying in midtown, but I searched the boards before I found that out, so I guess I was hoping if any of these places were too far away someone might point that out.
We arrive May 31st and leave June 5th, so it sounds like there is still time for Gramercy, thanks for that info;)
I was interested in Death and Co or Milk and Honey (which I now understand you can't get into). But the ones I mentioned seemed to get good reviews as well. My co worker loved PDT but it sounds like it's hard to get into. I was interested in Amor y Amargo. But, I will keep your advice in mind, would you prefer Little Branch to Death and Co?
Thanks for your help Kathryn. Funny that's my co workers name that is from NY!

Coming to New York for a long weekend and meeting my vegetarian friend, was hoping you could critique the places I'm thinking of! Since I am not vegetarian I want to find places that have more than one or two veg options. She is not interested in Indian since she lives in London. I'm coming from San Francisco.
So for dinner I was thinking Gramercy Tavern, Ciano, and Dirt Candy. (We have five nights) What do you think of these three? Any other suggestions? People seem to go back and forth on Italian and I also considered I Sodi and Da Andrea. I like small places with good food, it doesn't have to be fine dining.
For brunch/breakfast:
Shopsins
Locanda Verde
The Breslin
Minetta Tavern
Lunch/Snacks
Spotted Pig (but seems too meaty)
Caracas Arepa
Bowery Diner (she really wants to go to a diner, any other suggestions? Maybe Dizzy's Diner in Brooklyn, but we're staying in Midtown so that seems far).
Gottino
Rusty Knot
Bars:
Bathtub Gin
Raines Law Room
J Bird Cocktails
WD 50?
Thanks for your help!
mandatory tipping for larger groups [moved from Phoenix board]
I've never seen a place where a server keeps all of their tips. At the minimum, they have to tip their bussers. The higher up the restaurant the more staff to tip; food runners, bartenders, host/esses, banquet managers.
mandatory tipping for larger groups [moved from Phoenix board]
If it's what you would normally tip and you were happy with the service what was your objection? I have waited on people from France who wished we would add the tip because they didn't want to have to think about it.
Pastured jersey milk and pastured eggs?
St Benoit is available at the Petaluma Whole Foods.
Tastiest stop between OAK and Yountville for lunch?
I would stop at Nizza la Bella in Albany on your way up. I'm assuming you won't eat on the flight and probably be hungry. Nizza is open for lunch on Fridays and by the time you get there it should be open. They have great cocktails and pizzas and salads, plus they won't break the bank. Albany is next to Berkeley and the exit is really easy as well.
What's Your Favorite Domestic Beer and Why?
I'll throw in my husband's favorite which is also from RR. Supplication. He's really into the sour beers at the moment. His every day beer is Lagunitas Pils as he can't stand the hoppy sweet beers. Although, I think he says freshness is the most important thing. He also likes Firestone Double Barrel Ale.
Dogs in Restaurants
Unfortunately, it has gotten out of control. This is one of those laws that has become a little too lenient. I hope someone changes it so that the person at least has to carry papers identifying the animal as a service dog. Or snake or iguana etc...
Advice for Petaluma,Novato and Sebastapol
If you are looking for a casual lunch, I would recommend Ray's Tavern up on Western, they make excellent sandwiches and salads. You can eat it there and have a beer or glass of wine, or you can get it to go as it's a deli as well.
Customer Service at Restaurants
That's what they call "feeding the monster". Too many times people are rewarded for bad behaviour and then it grows exponentially. There are some customers who are not good for business and I've seen it in other types of businesses as well.
When the host is late serving the meal - also rude? Is it ok for guests to leave?
Thanks for saying that. My interpretation was that people were starving, not that they expected to eat and leave. Personally, if I were hungry I could not drink, because I would end up very drunk. Hunger and alcohol are not a good combination! The fact that these hosts admitted that they weren't hungry, but didn't think of how their guests might feel, sounds rude to me, not that the whole thing took so long, but that there was no consideration of getting something/anything into their guests stomachs so that the guests could also enjoy themselves.
Bar Agricole
This is completely different from my last two experiences. Admittedly, I am a fan. However, I brought a new person the last time and they were completely blown away by the food, I'd tell you what we had but I can't remember everything. We didn't find anything too salty and service was great. But, I will say that we were there on a Sunday and it was not that busy. Also, was the waitstaff inattentive? Or just busy? Sounds like they might have had their hands full and tried to make it up to with the apps. That would have worked for me.
Breakfest East Bay
Don't forget Nizza la Bella, although they only do brunch on weekends. It's definitely in the moderate price category and great food!
Commonwealth or Bar Agricole (or elsewhere)?
I love Bar Agricole, but it is not good for vegetarians. I know they intend to change that but it hadn't happened the last time I was there. I haven't been to Commonwealth.
Reservation confirmed but table not ready - how long have you waited?
I was going to comment but then I read the rest of your description of the event;)
