French-style Almond Croissants in TO

I think Clafouti has banana-chocolate croissant, but I didn't try one.

Coffee quest: Is there a Toronto equivalent of Vancouver's Cafe Artigiano?

Sam James always steams my americano. I think it is the best americano in the city.

Do you find Winterlicious a rip-off?? Or is it just me.

Had a not so good lunch at Pure Spirit. Portion is small, which I understand as this is a promotional event, but the food didn't taste good at all.

To start, we had calm chowder and fish cake to start. Calm chowder was fine, but fish cake came in a small plate with 1 piece of fish cake and a few springs. For main, the chicken stew on mashed potato only had a few spoonful of chicken stew on a big bowl of mashed potato. There were also some diced carrot, corn and grean beans just like the green giant frozen ones. The other main was white fish with saffron risotto. The risotto was tasteless and mushy. The fish is alright. The best dish is the creme caramel that I had for dessert. Smooth and soft but still hold a shape. My friend's chocolate tart was not so good according to her. I think the presentation of the desserts can improve a lot if they can put a strawberry on top. They were out of 1 dessert choice on the first day of winterlicious.

As for service, water is not refilled until we had paid our bills. We were sitting in the middle of the room and my chair was kicked by the servers for so many times. One time even the whole chair was moved. But there was no apology. Also, they tried to clear our table while we were eating the leftover bread after the mains. (We still have room for bread after mains...) Overall, i probably won't go back. If I want seafood, I will go to Starfish and Rodney's by Bay.

The texture of the creme is good. But there is no real vanilla beans, so there is not a lot of vanilla flavour. The problem is I don't have a fire touch and I couldn't get the brunt sugar crust using the broil setting of my oven.

The creme caramel is probably the best one I have tried among all the supermarket brand.

Bulldog Coffee Toronto - A lot of bull, not a lot to write home about

I also don't have problems with the service. The drinks are pretty good. However, it would be nice if they use paper cups instead of styrofoam cups. This will make me feel less guilty when I forget my travel mug.

Rodney's By Bay -- Anyone been?

Thanks for your reply, pinkprimp. I went later today and it was much quieter. When I go there again next time, I will go later to avoid the after work crowd.

The service was warm and nice. My server is very patient in answering all my questions. The place is small and really casual. I was dining alone and I never felt rushed. I like the way that they served water in glass jar with lemon and for refill, they put in a new lemon. This doesn't occur frequently. To start, I had the fish soup with jumbo prawns. It was flavourful with the taste of fresh fish and a hint of tomato. The prawns were hugh and tasty. I would order this again.

Then, I had the mussels and frites. The mussels were cooked perfectly and were not chewy at all. Again, they tasted fresh. The fries were skinny and seasoned with salt. I actually like this version better than the one in Starfish. Although both of them were really good, I found the sweet potatoes fries at Starfish too salty.

To end, I had a creme burlee. It was not the best one I had, but still really good. It is a simple classic version that with lots of vanilla beans. The creme was very smooth and the sugar top was not too thick so that the sugar would make the whole dessert extremely sweet. I would recommend this place if you want an alternative to Starfish or prefer a more causal seafood restaurant.

where to go for mussels in t.o.

I had great mussels in both Rodney's by Bay and Starfish. The one at the Fat Belgian is ok, but didn't taste as fresh as the other two places. BTW, the mussels at Rodney's are from PEI, if the origin matters to you.

Best French napoleon dessert in Yonge/Bloor area?

I tried the mille-feuille made by Rahier from Pusateri's. It is pretty good. The cream is smooth and not too sweet. The pastry to cream ratio is nice as well.

Rodney's By Bay -- Anyone been?

I wanted to try Rodney's By Bay for dinner because of all the great comments in his threads. I went there last week and I was too timid to walk in because it was filled with people in suits. (I know it is close to Bay St...)

Does any one know when is a good time to go if I want a quite dinner?

Toronto Steakhouses

Jacobs is the best. The only thing I don't like about this place is the price. If price is not a matter, go to Jacobs. Besides the steaks, I once had a baked potato with wagyu brisket. that is really really good.

Barberians is also good, but not as good as Jacobs. Ruth Chris is similar to the Keg except the service and the room are better.

Montreal to Toronto, looking for good food palces

I think Torito is in Kensington Market and Gilead Cafe is close to Distillery District instead of near Liberty Village. Just in case the OP search for these places.

For mid-price Italian, I will throw in Mercatto (various location). Second the Le Petit Dejeuner recommendation. For breakfast, Aunties and Uncles on College St is very famous.

Good cookies or pastries near Yonge & Dundas (i.e. Eatons Centre)?

Sen5es is gone.

I second the FFfresh rec. Their cookie is pretty good. The candy store near the food court in Eaton Centre (Queen St side) sells Monsieur Félix & Mr. Norton Cookie but I haven't tried them so I am not sure how good they are.

Scone at Drake Cafe

I just grabbed a blueberry scone from the cafe at Drake hotel. It is the best I have had in TO. Fluffy, light, buttery. It is still warm so I guess it just came out from the oven. It is much lighter than the ones from Hank's and School. It is full of blueberry. You can taste the fruit but there is no sour taste. The only one that I find can be comparable in texture is the ones from Wagamama. However, they don't have the fruit favour.

If you love scone with fruit, Drake is the place to go.

Recommendations for Younge/King Street

Hank's is great.

I would also add Starfish, if you are into seafood. It is at Adelaide b/w Jarvis and Church.

Best Espresso in the city...

I agreed with you that quality of Hank's is not that consistent. The cappucino that I have yesterday was not as good as the 4 I had before.

Talking about Hanks, I have a question about their cappucino. When I ordered to sit in, I always get it in a short wide mouth cup. But when I ordered to go, I got three different sizes. One time, I got one that is the size of a small Timmy coffee. The other time, I got it in a regular paper cup (8oz), but they charged me extra. Yesterday, I got the regular size again but they didn't charge me extra. This is pretty confusing. I would have asked them if I were not in a rush.

Best Espresso in the city...

I agree with you. But on Saturday, there is always long line-up. If I don't want to wait, I will go to Hank's on Church. The espressos are also good. An added bonus is they have a great selection of baked goods. My fave is the lemon scone.

Excellent brunch at School Bakery & Cafe

You should try the biscuits and cookies next time. I found these are much better than the banana muffin. My fave is the black forest cookie.

ISO (in search of) coconut ice-cream

T&T has a Nestle brand coconut ice-cream that is produced in Philippine. You can give it a try.

I also like the coconut ice-cream from Greg's. But they are in downtown.

Where to send European visitors on Yonge between Wellesley and Bloor?

Agree with other's suggestion. Another Japanese suggestion is Tokyo Kitchen on Charles has good Japanese curry and ramen. BibimQ has OK Korean food but it is like a fast food place. If they can travel a bit south of Wellesley, there is Yummy BBQ. Tempus has good Iranian food.

Regarding the Friendly Thai, it is passable Thai food. I would rather go to Saland King.

Sidecar on College- Great value, nice dinner!

Totally agree with you on the prix fix menu. Tasty food and good value. The servers were also really friendly. The dessert was flourless chocolate cake when I went. It was rich but not too sweet. I prefer to go there ealier in the evening (6 pm) because it is a busy restaurant and can get quite nosiy.

Solo dining tomorrow

Thank you for all the replies!

I ended up at starfish. I went a bit early at around 6:30. They were really accomodating and allowed me to choose wherever I wanted. I got a table for myself because there were a few groups at the bar already. I had the mussels and fries. The mussels were kind of small compared to those I had in Pairs, but they were fresh and didn't have the fishy taste. The white wine and cream broth was flavourful. It tasted so good that I dipped the fries into the broth to soak up everything. They gave me a hugh plates of fries. The fries were skinny and crisp and well-seasoned. I would say they were as tasty as the fries from the Gilead cafe. But after finishing the whole plates of fries, I felt thirsty because of the salt. For dessert, I had the maple creme burle. The top was a bit thick for my liking but nevertheless, the creme was smooth and thick. However, I only tasted maple syrup in the top but not in the creme. The creme had vanilla taste only. The accompany peacon cookies were good, crunchy and buttery. Although the restaurant got busy half-way through my dinner. I never felt rushed.

I would recommend Starfish to anyone who wants to dine alone. For those who doesn't like seafood, they actually have quite a few meat dishes on the menu.

Now I will have to try JK wine bar and Cava...

Solo dining tomorrow

Hi,

I am looking for a restaurant to dine alone tomorrow in downtown. Places that I am considering are Harbord Room, Starfish and Weezie's. But these places are popular and I am not sure how will they treat solo diner on a friday night. One top of that, I am not a drinker due to health reason. I don't want to start my weekend with snobby services. Which restaurant do you think is the best for dining alone? Other suggestions are also welcomed.

Thanks in advance!

Milo's Pita - Toronto Life Square (Yonge/Dundas)

I went to Milo's last weekend. I am an extremely picky eater and I asked the guy (probably Milo) to make a sandwich with only chicken and tahini sauce. (I know I am strange that I don't like veggies and garlic). He was very nice and didn't question me nor give me any attitude. So, maybe he was having a bad day when you guys went? Onto the food, the chicken was really good, flavourful and juicy. I found the chicken from Red and White on Yonge and Gerrad salty. But I don't have the same problem with Milo's. My companion said the veggies were fresh. Milo's is pricer than other mid east places in the area, but the quality of the food is pretty good and the foodcourt is spacious and clean. I hope he will do better since the foodcourt in Toronto Life centre is not that busy.
