Best places to take NYC visitors in DC
You guys could mosy up to cleveland park - have some wine at Ripple and contemplate the cornucopia of restaurant choices that await you right in that area. If you wanted to go down one metro stop, bet they'd like Lebanese Taverna...not mid atlantic food but really good middle eastern with surprisingly good libations to boot...
tysons chain hell
2 suggestions: Seasons 52 (technically at tysons corner mall but you can valet if you want) but once you get inside you don't know you are in the mall...honest. Fresh, healthy, seasonal, and awesome service. Also Evo Bistro in McLean...wine bar and tapas but really yummy
Dim Sum
if you feel like a roadtrip, Fortune in Bailey's Crossroads VA is outstanding....i have a chinese friend who says it's very authentic too, and reasonable...if you go for lunch during the week it isn't too crowded either...weekends i hear are a mob scene...
Great South American or Mexican in downtown DC?
i just heard from a Cuban friend that Cuba Libre in Penn Q is outstanding...really authentic...and i think it would meet your criteria even though it is neither mexican nor south american...and it's right in the area you are staying in!
Need a few more DC recommendations
Do you want one high-end recommendation? Obelisk is my fave in DC/ it's 70-75 PP depending on date, fixed price northern italian and the best dining experience (IMHO) in DC...and i've been to them all except Komi.... but you need to reserve 3-4 weeks ahead unless it's a week night. It's a real experience...
Easy, cheap eats in DC - do they even exist?
You guys have got to be kidding...the greater DC area is crawling with cheap ethnic places!!! you didn't say specifically 'where' but NOVA has oodles of these places with even specific neighborhoods known for certain foods...clarendon for viet, etc. we live in springfield which is a restaurant wasteland...except for cheap, quick, ethnic mom & pops....i think there are some in the city too if you get off the touristy paths...
Winter Restaurant Week Announced!
i would say 1789 hands down...but it's probably too late! We are going to Occidental...i think that is a really underrated place with great food, good service and a nice atmosphere. Their RW week offerings are always really good....choice of meat, seafood, chicken, etc and the apps are really inventive. Desserts are luscious!
Looking for a decent restaurant that isn't taking part in restaurant week
What about New Heights? i don't know if they are doing RW or not but it's right there near you...walking distance even.
Update on Ray's the Glass?
I just looked on line and still, nothing about Ray's the Glass and it's been almost a year. Does anyone have any recent info?
thanks
Delivery in upper NW DC
i don't have any restaurant suggestions since i dont' live in your area but wanted to suggest a crock pot for some meals! it's totally the season for that kind of food; you just throw any kind of meat in there and it comes out great
good luck w/ your kitchen.
Where to lay our heads after dining at Inn at Little Washington
Heritage House is a block away and is very charming & reasonable. Great breakfast if you can eat after diiner at IALW!
As far as going to c'ville after, it's a ways away, probably at least an hour or so. it's a great town though. Best wineries are Barboursville, about 20 min N of C'ville, Kluge and Jefferson. There are other good ones in the area too; in fact the best in VA are there. For dinner, on the pedestrian mall you will find Siips, which is a wine bar with really nice tapas and some decent entrees. Depending upon where you live in NOVA, it's about a 2.5 hour drive home from there. You will find some wineries on the way home too depending upon which way you drive.
You will love IALW, it's really over the top in a good way, fabulous food, surroundings, wine & service. enjoy!
Dining Near Arena Stage
Phillips seafood is decent; good happy hour offerings during the week. you could walk from there to the theater.
Romantic restaurant?
I am not sure if you could get a reservation this late but I'd suggest 1789 in Georgetown to make a good impression. Food, service & atmosphere are really great, especially in the main dining room. There isn't a view from there but honestly there aren't that many places here with a view at all, let alone great dining experiences. Adour at the St Regis is also really good, and if you get a window table you can people watch. if you are dead set on a view and decent food, i'd suggest charlie Palmer's on capital hill. Use open table.com and put a request for a table by the window with a view of the capit0l bldg. This time of year is the only time you can actually see it (bare trees!) Have a great time and welcome to DC!
Anything that's not to be missed at Mitsitam Cafe in the Native American Museum?
i usually get the 4 side dish plate...the smoked squash is awesome (Rachael Ray said it was one of the best hings she ever ae...) and ahyting with quinoa is great i also had a blue potate/beet/tomato/herb dish last time that was yummy. The salsa is good too.
Anniversary dinner at Citronelle
i may be tardy with this response but the sentiment stands: the reason there are so many restaurants is that everyone has his or her own preferences. My experience at Citronelle involved lackadaisical service, extremely small courses (and i'm not a big eater), and a dessert that was nothing more that a poof of lemon foam without anything else to give it substance. Our seat was also in a corner and although we ordered a tasting menu and a very nice bottle of wine, i didn't feel i was treated the way i expected to be given the amount of $ being spent. If you've had a better experience, great...but you don't need to denigrate other's postings just becuase you disagree. Have you been to all the places you referred to? Rankings, like postings, are in the eye of the beholder and i tend to view THOSE with a grain of salt, more so than opinions on chowhound...
Celebrating parents 43rd Anniversary!! Restaurants needed!
agree they would love it, my parents sure did, but the poster said they wanted "reasonable". Outside of restaurant week & the summer special, i wouldn't call 1789 reasonable. However if you can swing it, they would love it and beef is an option.
Ray's the Catch opening this Spring? + other changes
So does anyone know if Ray's the Glass really did open in mid Jan? i would love to check it out...
What restaurant are you excited about for DC's restaurant week?
We're going to 1789 tonight; one of our faves and just a note to all who procrastinated: i saw several high end places w/ cancellations today (just snagged the 1789 half an hour ago.....) Anyway, we usually do a bottle of wine but i noticed they are having wine flights with the RW courses. The ;price makes me think they may not be all that great but just wanted to see if anyone had gone there for RW and had the wine flight. And how was it? thanks
New Heights in Cleveland park
I agree it's a nice place but to avoid confusion for folks New Heights is in Woodley Park, not Cleveland park.
Tosca Ristorante or other suggestions?
You'll love it...and if you eat before 7 you can get a 3 course fixed price menu with many choices. Leaves you more for a great bottle of italian vino!
DC - One Night Only - What's THE Restaurant?
You didn't mention date or location but even though it isn't "hot and new" the best food in DC is at Obelisk. If you can get in... no web site because menus are made daily but i guarantee you would go home raving. It's in Dupont, leave the car at the hotel.
Suggestions for New Years Eve
...then cost certainly IS an issue since most nice places have special NYE menus that are fixed priced and most more than $50 a head and that's just the food. Would suggest getting on open table and search by the date and neighborhood and their web pages should state if they have limited menus that night and how much they are. Also if you try something less high end than those you mentioned above you might have better luck. Dupont and Adams Morgan have lots of choices like that; one that comes to mind is Little Fountain Cafe on 18th.
Anyone Been to Ris Yet??
We drove by there the other day but last time i looked on line, there was still no menu so i'm not sure if it's essentially "1789 without the jacket" or something completely different. Would love to hear from anyone who's eaten there!
50th Wedding Anniversary restaurant?
I think 1789 would be perfect for this; it's old world service, atmosphere (jacket req'd) which your parents would probably love. And the food is top notch. Free valet too. I'm sure they could accommodate your party quite nicely.
Foodie with less adventurous friends
I would recommend Ristorante Tosca; it's N. Italian so your friends woudln't think it was too 'out there' but it's really wonderful and if you go and eat before 7, you can get a 3 course meal (with many choices) for $35 -- one of the best bargains in DC. It's got really good service and atmosphere too; you would want to wear "dressy casual" or better. For something a little more unusual but still approachable, try Lebanese Taverna, locations in Arlington and Woodley Park; great food at a good price.
georgetown suggestions for foodie new yorker coming to town
you should try 1789, local landmark right near GU. jacket required but awesome food, service, ambiance AND free valet parking! mendocino is good; avoid citronnelle like the plague! :)
recommendations for tonight
Anna Maria's? Grill from Ipanema? Raku? Zorba? all close by you, all rlatively inexensive, good, casual..;.
Parents visiting me in DC - need ideas for two restaurants
What about heading up to Cleveland park one of the evenings? you could have a glass of wine at Bardeo (you can get $5 valet parking if you have a drink at Bardeo) and then wander down to Lavandou (provencal french), Yanni (Greek), Sabores (tapas) or if you want something higher end, Palena. Proof would be good but it's hard to get sat nght reservations there. Tosca is great, but you would want to dress some there. Urbana is really nice, good bar & modern american food in the restaurant. If you can get in, Obelisk is an experience not to be missed but it is $75 PP on the weekends. You get the wonderful food (5 course N. italian) without the dress up requirement or snooty service.
Anniversary dinner at Citronelle
we were underwhelmed by citronelle. if you are willing to spend that kind of money go to CityZen or Eve, or really make a night fo it and go to the inn at little washington. If you want a phenomenal meal w/o the formal atmosphere i'd suggest obelisk.
but one thing i will say for Citronelle: the wine list is great.
