Very Good BBQ Brisket at Maple Block

CHANNELING KEVIN:

Yep, I finally hit up f_c_ing The Maple Block in Culver City. They did quite a competent job of erase any memory or semblance of the old Villa Italian space, save for re-gussying up the iconic neon sign a bit.
The bbq brisket was a thing of utter beauty for the most part. It's exceptional stuff. It's up there with Big Mista for me. I would have to do a side-by-side taste test to see which one would be better. But on a great day, Big Mista would be better beause when those burnt ends are on it's completely a masochistic pleasure par excellence, second to none in these parts (LA/OC/SD Counties) working in conjunction with that supreme smokeyness.
Maple Block's brisket was fatty (i asked for the fatty end which is where all that flavor is at) and tender and had some burnt ends attached to the fat which were the perfect fucking bites. It's a great find. I ordered up a 1/3 of a pound, then when I took a closer look at the gloriously marbled brisket, changed my order to a 1/2 pound, and once I received the order devoured it barely a few moments. I proceeded back to the butcher counter and ordered another 1/4 pound which was great but didn't quite reach the heights of the first 1/2 pound. Melting in your mouth tender with top notes of smokeyness was the order of the fucking day.
The vinegar slaw was beyond horrendous; the pickles were so fucking LA. But what I wanted was a real pickle and jalapenos, not a high-falutin pickle that would be more than apropos at your neighborhood tempura joint.
The coffee soda was disgustingly delicious. Beyond disgutingly delicous. Though curiously it helped to cut down the richness of the fatty beef brisket to size. The bitterness from the strong coffeee worked somewhat as a digestivo, as a piece of pickled ginner would be between bites of hirame nigiri and Hokkaido uni nigiri. The soda worked well too.
Prices are decidedly high though potentially not out of line with the other by the pound joints in LA.
I skipped the strawberry rhubarb hand pie. Ultimately, I was in hurry to get back, which is why luckily I didn't have to wait on line to go for my last 1/4 of brisket.
Sorry for the above quickly write down impressions, it may sound supremely f__Ing pretentious and it's pretty f___Ing unedited.

Depending on how many of you there are, you could go to Spago and have the bar menu. If you get there before 7 there are two four top tables adjacent to the main patio that are really nice and serve the bar menu. Link is below.

Antonio's Pizza/Barone's Pizza-Sherman Oaks

The small size is very small and unlike the larger ones round not rectangular. While it should not effect the taste, the rectangular pie adds to the unique quality of their pizza.

I think the Express is a different operator. I would stick with the original.

Antonio's Pizza/Barone's Pizza-Sherman Oaks

The only thing worth getting at Barones is the pizza. You can ignore everything else.

$10 and under near the Grove/Fairfax area

One of the better Whole Foods is very close and they have a wide selection of prepared foods. In particular they have very good ribs, beef, short and pork, and one can get a nice portion for under $10.

Odys & Penelope - Outragous Service Charge

Except many think of a tip as a gratitude to the people actually serving you. A service charge is not that. If a place makes the election to charge a service charge, then I personally think they should say its in lieu of gratuity. One could still tip, but the ambiguity would be eliminated. While I have seen the insurance subsidy charge, I dont recall many places that have an 18% service charge or similar unless its for a large party.

Odys & Penelope - Outragous Service Charge

I think that if its going to the house but subsidizes a higher wage in lieu of a tip, that the menu should say the service charge is in lieu of gratuity.

Odys & Penelope - Outragous Service Charge

Buddy just told me that he was at O & P last night. Had a nice meal and noticed the bill included 18% service charge. When he asked if that was gratuity the waiter said no, that it all goes to the house. Also mentioned that they ordered a single rib that was a special and was surprised to find a charge of over $40. Other than that report was food was very good.

Best Pizza in Los Angeles (& surrounding)????!!

Barone's is a classic. Great pizza. The rest of their food sucks and the venue is depressing, but cant beat it to go! Sausage is great and one of the few clam pies around.
