Sorry for the gender confusion but not sorry for BT's rec great brisket!

Love your posts so keep them coming.

I agree that Jenny is a true maven which may be because, iir, she is a true Texan? I am hoping she tries BT's Smokehouse in Sturbridge which is my new favoriete NE b'que spot although too far for regular visits.

FYI: Smitty's is the original Kreuz Market ( some kind of divorce or family rift resulted in the change of name) and definitely has the blackened walls. You will see them when you purchase your meat. The new Kreuz is a large open place but you will also see the pits there. Black's is more like a restaurantt with counters and the pits are in the back. A visit to all will be a very cool experience for you. If you are in the area ofr more than a day, consider a drive to Taylor (which is not too far) and try Louis Mueller's as well.

Keeping on topic though, I am still interested in trying the brisket at Sweet Cheeks.

yumyum, so glad you finally got to Lockhart! Smitty's is my favorite but they are all great. I will have to get to Sweet cheeks although Smitty's and company have spoiled me as far as price and atmosphere go. However your insight is enlightening. I keep failing to add the cost of the plane ticket to the overall cost of lunch in Lockhart! (:

Tremont Street

Depends on which end of Tremont she is staying. If near Omni Parker House or the Nine Zero hotels, Teatro ususally has a couple of seafood dishes on their menu and Ocean Air is nearby but expensive.

Need a dive bar with really good food in Downtown Boston

I agree it is a great spot. No frills, just good drinks, beer and a nice looking burger (which I have not yet tried).

Good price for lamb?

where did you get them? Was it Sulmona?

Il Capriccio Review

Reminds me that it has been way too long since my last vist there. It has aways been a favorite with all great experiences.

Good price for lamb?

McKinnon's boneless at that price is Australian - if that makes a difference to you.

Recap of our Boston St. Paddy's Weekend Dining

"Anytime I see people struggling with a map and looking lost I help them whether they like it or not": yumyum you are my kind of girl. I do the same thing and am frequently not shy about steering visitors to restaurants in the North End.

Pappy Van Winkles

For retail purchase, Federal Wine and Spirits on State Street in Downtown Boston had it the last time I checked which was few months ago.

best bartenders for regulars?

I know you are not looking for upscale but I have to give a shout out to the bartenders at Prezza (North end) who, despite usually being extremely busy, will find time to chat if you engage them and often help you meet other folks at the bar who are regulars. I only go there about once every 2 -3 months and despite that, I am remembered and well treated. They also mix cocktails quite competently ( and in sizeable amounts as well).

Absoloutely epic phrase...

Southern Barbecue in Boston? Oxymoron?

Just had it last week (the brisket) and it was the best I have had in New England. The mac and cheese was very good too, as you pointed out

great,, thanks for posting and very happy that you enjoyed it!

Zo's original = best sandwich-ish offering downtown?

That's the one! Always a line. Great garlic sauce.

Southern Barbecue in Boston? Oxymoron?

Finally tried BT's last Saturday. Final stop on a road trip to Connecticut involving visits to Wilson's in Fairfield, Bobby Q's In Westport and the Black Duck (no chow, beer only there). Went to BT's on a relatively full stomach and so ate quite moderately but everything was great. This is the first place in New England where I have had brisket that could at least hold its own against Lockhart TX brisket - and that is saying something! Very large portions, nice folks running the place and real wood smoked 'cue. Agree that pulled pork was very good and ribs were good but not better than Blackstrap's (which are great). But the brisket and pickled condiments, the pulled chicken and even the pan heated mac and cheese were great as were the different mopping sauces - particularly the mustard based one. But this is barbecue that didn't need sauce. Great place and worth the drive.

Portland eats - how do these places sound?

Fore Street is great but you usually need to reserve well in advance so don't wait too long. A few other places to consider are Caiola in the West End, Vignola in Old Port as well as Grill Room or Corner Room. Caiola is a smaller venue but really very good and casual.

Ok, I will measure on my walk home tonight! lol

Bina Osteria is near Downtown Crossing/Theater Distict, not so close to the Hilton in the Financial District although neither is Erbaluce. Is it ppossible you meant L'osteria in the North End?

While the Trattoria is small, the larger venue on Richmond Street might also fit the bill. The homemade pasta ther is very good and thay have a very nice wine list. Overall, your list is really pretty good although I would strike Tresca which is just OK and Strega which imho is a trap and a money pit. Prezza is my favorite but not all that quiet but you should easily be able to chat without much problem.

Must haves from Blackstrap and Sweet Cheeks BBQ

Agree with you on the brisket - the only item I tried there whih was less than great. Nice folks there too!

Sweet Cheeks

Nice and helpful review. Thanks!

Sweet Cheeks

I like the fatty brisket which is not all that fatty when smoked correctly. Will have to try Sweet Cheeks since so many raves and I think Tina Faison is from Texas. You are reminidng me that a vist to Lockhart is coming up at the end of January and the usual battle of Smitty's vs, Kreuz will come up. I am partial to Smitty's although the extra drive to Luling for City Market is also a possibility (:-

wow they were around for a very long time iir

North End on a Thursday night?

For a nice experience without the Prezza prices, (although I ve Prezza) I think you and your friends would enjoy Marco on Hanover Street. Marc Orfaly of Pigalle fame is the owner and the menu is both intersting and relatively reasonaly priced. NIce wine list and house made salumi as well. And Modern Pastry is right downstairs!

Financial District Soup Question

Is the Milk Street Cafe still open? If so they always had very good soups

I get great soup at the cafe at Blu at Sports Club LA but no really close to you.
