I also really like Blue Bunny's Bordeaux Cherry Chocolate frozen yogurt - it's an amaretto cherry flavor with a lot of cherry chunks and chocolate chips. It has a really refreshing flavor with a a smooth texture, I definitely recommend it :)

Pho Thai Lao in Maywood Thoughts

I agree - the larb gai, larb nuer, and fish larb are unusual and taste really fresh with a nice hit of galangal & fish sauce flavors. I always liked their noodle soups, but some of the more widespread Thai dishes I've had there (chicken satay, fried tofu with peanut sauce, green/red curry, pad see ew, pad khee mao) didn't really blow me away.

Awesome Thai - Ruby Siam Thai Restaurant - Rochelle Park, NJ

Not sure why I wrote cream, but yes, I meant coconut milk.

I like Friendly's Coffee, actually. It's not too sweet and has a lot of coffee flavor. Turkey Hill's Colombian Coffee and Bavarian Espresso are also some of my favorites, I love mocha/coffee flavored ice cream!

And you're right - it's always peanut butter cup in vanilla base, or chocolate with peanut butter swirl, or fudge tracks. I would like to see more peanut butter bases too!

Is there an H-Mart or Whole Foods near your area? Asian supermarkets often carry those flavors, and higher end supermarkets like WF and Fairway have a brand called Mr. Green Tea that has both of those, plus ginger. (I've only had the Green Tea, but it was excellent.)

That sounds amazing! I'm reasonably happy with Friendly's pistachio flavor, which is all I can find around here. I don't think I've ever seen it at the Asian markets nearby.

Do you have Turkey Hill Peaches N' Cream wherever you live? :)

I have had all of the Duff Goldman flavors besides Carrot Cake, which isn't carried by any store near me - I liked the Strawberry Shortcake and Triple Chocolate Cake the most.

Anyone know whether Turkey Hill/Edy's/anything else in the Northeast is making any apple pie/pumpkin pie/gingerbread flavors this year? I also can't wait for the Edy's spumoni!

Please help me find these flavors of Turkey Hill ice cream!

Hi everyone, I want to try Turkey Hill's Light Cookies and Cream, Light Strawberry Cheesecake (not Stuff'd) as well as their Southern Lemon Pie frozen yogurt, but can't find 1.5 quart containers of those flavors in any supermarket nearby (Paramus area, Bergen County).

If anyone has passed the freezer aisle in a northern NJ supermarket lately and spotted any of these three flavors, please let me know! Unlike the other big ice cream brands, Turkey Hill doesn't let you search for stores that carry a specific flavor, only stores that carry their brand.

Awesome Thai - Ruby Siam Thai Restaurant - Rochelle Park, NJ

I have to agree - there's a lot of places for Thai (Wondee's, Bangkok Garden, Ruby Siam) around here, but I haven't seen another Lao place in Bergen County. Thai Lao tends to serve lighter food with less oil and cream, which I really like. Come to think of it, I'm really craving some of their larb gai right now...the Lao dishes are especially good!

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good goat's milk ice cream? I've been trying to get some Laloo's black fig but haven't found it so far.

Quality frozen squid?

Can anyone recommend a brand of frozen squid that can be purchased at stores on the East Coast, and note how much it costs?

Having run out of mango, I stopped by H-Mart and picked up a ube-macapuno swirl flavor. It's excellent, thanks for the recommendation! :)

Turkey Hill sells Southern Lemon Pie, I believe, though no store around here carries it. I love Trader Joe's Lemon and Triple Ginger Snap ice cream, though. One other flavor I wish would be more easily accessible is cinnamon!

I love cookies and cream as much as anyone, but sometimes I feel like trying more exotic flavors of ice cream - mango, green tea, and black sesame are three of my favorites. I recently found a half-gallon of Selecta Mango ice cream from the Philippines at my local H-Mart, and it was surprisingly good. I'm still looking for good green tea and black sesame, though. What kinds of unusual ice cream do you like that can be found in stores, and what brand is it?

Mantra in Paramus and Tandoori Chef in Hackensack

I live in Hackensack, quite close to both of these Indian restaurants, but plans to eat there never seem to work out. I plan on trying both over this weekend, especially because I got a Groupon for Mantra and I think I have an old coupon for Tandoori Chef as well. Any recommendations for dishes at either of the two restaurants? I've never had any luck finding decent Indian in Bergen County - Brick Lane in Ridgewood was decent but I felt it was overpriced.

Paterson Turkish

Toros and Sahara are both really great choices. I remember that Toros' babaganoush, dolma, and kofte were all excellent, and it's a bit nicer if you want to eat in. Sahara is a bit cheaper and has more menu options, but I would highly recommend their regular lahmajun (2.75) and gyro sandwich (4.50) which are probably two of the best values anywhere around here food-wise. I would eat that gyro every day if I lived closer to Paterson...

MAYWOOD-SEAFOOD GOURMET

I like the fish and chips, but I think their fried calamari is even better - you get a huge portion and the squid doesn't feel rubbery or frozen like in most calamari, it's the perfect texture and tastes a bit sweet. Although they could be a little crispier, I think the calamari rank among the best I've ever had :)

When I get dinner from Seafood Gourmet I usually try to pick the fish dishes from the weekly specials, especially the white fish such as halibut, bass, and swordfish - those are always excellent!

Superlative food in Bergen County?

I agree with Capital Grill and Chicken Kebab. For Greek, I also like Sparta Taverna (formerly George's) in Ridgefield Park, especially the moussaka and pasticchio, although all of their souvlaki dishes are also excellent. As for Thai, Bangkok Garden and Wondee's in Hackensack are right across the street from each other and are both decent - Bangkok Garden's ingredients tend to be a bit better, I've found, while Wondee's is generally more authentic, a little spicier and a little less sweet. Pho Thai Lao in Maywood is a family restaurant that's a Thai and Lao fusion of sorts, and they have some interesting authentic dishes - although I've always preferred curry from Wondee's.

Like you, I've never had much success with Italian that was worth the trip and money. Anyone have any suggestions for that?

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 2nd quarter 2012 [OLD]

Yea for three items I never got until recently: Crunchy Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, Frozen Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, and Frozen Chocolate Croissants! The oatmeal raisin cookies are bite-sized and very crunchy and oaty without being too sweet. The frozen dough and croissants both tasted amazing and were easy to prepare, just as directed on the package.

Two other things that I always buy are the Chili Pepper Sauce (decent amount of heat, very deep flavor profile, a bit sweet and smoky, a bit like Cholula) and Ginger Mango Chutney (not overly sweet, and imo much better flavor than other chutneys twice the price)

Nay on the Manchego Cheese, Lemongrass Chicken Stix, and Vanilla Joe-Joes. The cheese was less nutty and a bit more fruity than I expect from Manchego, but had a weird waxyness to it. The lemongrass definitely overpowered everything else in the stix, and they didn't crisp up as nicely as expected. Finally, it may be up to personal preference, but I found the Vanilla Joe-Joes a little too oily and a little too sweet, I do prefer Whole Foods' version here (which, amazingly, is the same price.)
